Here's a question for the group: Is anyone else gating IS only objects such
as FIRE, QUAKE, etc?

And that's the key - Don't overload your local network.

In this area, it seems to co-exist with existing traffic. However, I can see
certain areas that you would definitely NOT want to do this on the existing
144.39 APRS network.

Sounds fine to me. As long as your local network can handle the load.
thanks

Well yea this is one of those relative things, relative to location and
need. I know of only one CW station in thus area and where it's only 2
block away from an amateur radio operator's WX station, there may be no need
to gate the CW station. Where aprs traffic is so light in the area it
wouldn't hurt to do so.--73

Yes it is the key but the key may not be there in all networks. For
instance if you decide to digi via 1 wide in one place it may go out for
20-30 miles due to the range of the digi and the stations location only
reaching a single digi, they have the key and it works great.

Now on the other hand someone that has a digi that can cover 100-150
miles and sends it out WIDE,WIDE can create a mess if there is another
good coverage digi in range of #1 sometimes more than one, add to this
factor the station doing the gate can probably reach 2 wides at the same
time and it's messy.

Notice I said messy, not a problem, we are all talking about X and Y
here so it may be a problem, it may be fine or messy, all depends on way
too many factors. Like the factor that makes "just fine" into a
"problem, when one station in the case above gates a bunch of stuff it's
no problem if the traffic can handle it but since the radio topography
covers such a huge area there are many other APRS stations and someone
else 200 miles away decides they want to do it also, there is the
problem, the traffic would just be too much. Neither of them belong to
the same "group" or "region" and they want to do their thing, can't
blame them but it can cause headaches for everyone in the area and the
area in a case like this is huge.

Also to those who say the packets will make it through eventually you
are right...if the station stays there and keeps trying over and over
again adding more traffic. But how about those who are passing through
who sends a 5 or even 30 watt beacon out every 5 minutes with things
like mountians, trucks, overpasses, buildings and fading playing a big
part of each transmission? They may enter and leave the digi area in a
short period of time and not get the packet through. Remember what
APRS's main intention is, to report positions of local stations.
Everything else is gravy but don't let the gravy let you forget that you
have a meal under there also.

APRS is NOT plug and play!! The internet, CW stations, firenet reports
etc. etc. are all wonderful things when used properly but do it right
and in some cases right may be not doing it at all or deciding who will
get the chance to do it since everyone can not. APRS is a NETWORK and
not a place for loners or loose cannons, hams have got to network
together to make it work right. Just like 2 hams insisting on having a
WIDE digi up and having towers across the street from each other, would
it be right to have both of them on the air? Would it do the network any
good or just boost their ego stating that they are are the cause of such
a terrible area network.

This would seem to be the perfect application for using specific digi
callsigns in the path instead of the generic WIDE or WIDEn-N, to
precisely control and limit where these transmissions go. Presumably
the person doing the gating would (or should be!) aware of the local
digipeater "topography".

How about a APRSMAX version? Last Max version was 846.

Yep.....

Now the kicker..... In the software I use, I can NOT set a path for gating
objects or stations without affecting my Igate's normal path...or the path
I'd like to use for 'normal' traffic. So I'm stuck reducing my igates path
down to near nothing in order to keep peace with the rest of the local
world.
I would really like to be able to have more than one unproto path. I think
be having a settable path for gating items, objects and the like from the IS
would be a worthy feature ALL APRS softwares should have. The benefits are
obvious to me, at least. And, all softwares should also have a settable
path for beacons as well!
Anyway, I am not getting any where asking for this...but I wont give up on
the hope that someday I'll have that feature!

Very true.. I have thought about this on occasion and the only thing I
can think of is wasteful of equipment. Set up a station just for the
Igate and another one for your normal operation, possibly using the same
radio. Either 2 TNC's hacked to 1 radio and 2 com ports and 2 processes
of the application or 2 PC's feeding 1 TNC and 1 radio with the
probability of some mangled or missed packets.
