Okay, well if he is already running Weather Display, I bet we can get him
onto some software that already works hand-in-hand with Weather Display,
like UI-View32.

Will send him something in the mail if I cannot get him on the radio.

From his packet (specifically the .WD on the end) he is running Weather
Display, which is an internet only program. I'm not sure if WD allows user
entered APRS IS validation numbers, some of the programs for Citizen Weather
do and some don't, but there is no reason to bother, it will not change
anything...

The "purchased" version of Weather Display allows the use of validation
numbers and server selection as of a few years ago. I do not know if the
free 'NWS' version allows for this.

Does the Garmin E-Trex have street maps in it? Can a street map be
downloaded to it. A friend of mine just got one and we cannot get any street
maps to display. The datum is set to WGS-84.

Depends on the model. The 'e-Trex' is now a whole series. I bought my
son the base e-Trex (the yellow unit) and it does NOT display maps.

My friend got the Yellow one. I guess he'll have to dig up his money chest
if he wants street maps. Thanks

I guess someone is IGating Citizens WX to RF in your area. I guess the
packets are actually being transmitted under the callsign of the IGate and
so are probably legal in the strict sense. But I wonder if we want do be
doing things this way...

Bob and the group:

We are gating these stations here in the West Central Florida area. I'm
gating a couple out of the Clearwater area and Dave KG4YZY is gating the
rest out of Pasco County. We use APRS heavily for weather information in
this area, and thought this information would be useful on RF.

We specified the stations we wanted to see on RF, and didn't enable generic
gating of all of the CW stations. Why would you think we shouldn't be doing
it this way? As you said below, we are taking responsibility for the
transmissions under our callsigns..

Are you implying that these packets be sent as object only?
I think thats a great Idea!
I also think that we must remember that CW stations are not third party
traffic.
Rather they are simply a data source.
The only problem with this is that control of an object can be taken over by
another station.
Which really is not a problem unless its abused.

Oh heck.. I saw a bunch of things while I drove most of the east coast
these past 10 days. One of the things that became VERY obvious which is
not when at home and occasionally on the internet is the number of
stations that gate a LOT of traffic from the internet to RF.

When at home it can be good DX either direct or via a couple of digi's
that have enhanced conditions, or even via the internet by mistake but
when doing 70 mph mobile if you hear it 99% of the time it is from a
local.

As far as UNPROTO's I just love to see those effective digi's that do a
WIDE-3 on each and every position report, god that creates traffic
sometimes spanning 3 states! Or worse yet the digi's that do WIDE-3
while in the meantime can't decode a packet from a mobile 4 miles away,
talk about an aligator.A digi that covers 50-80 miles has no real need
to tie up a network with 3 hops announcing it's position every 15
minutes. If other digi's within those 3 hops also have good coverage you
can be sending out position reports for stationary objects every 15
minutes over several hundred miles

There is GREAT need for proper education and in some cases peer pressure
in the APRS community. It can get out of hand quick if some of these
people start "teaching" others.

On the same hand though I got to say that there are a lot of people out
there with some very effective home and remote locations across the east
coast, I was very impressed this year at the coverage that I managed to
maintain. Still stumped that in GA other than in Brunswick/Jacksonville
FL there is no APRS activity for the entire strech of I-95. Coverage on
the NJ/DEL border along I-95 was also lacking a bit considering it's
close proximity to the "epicenter" shall we call it of APRS, MD/DC.

I don't think that one or two people gating a few CW stations is the
point, it's not a big deal but if one or two can do it then others may
say well I can do it too and add a few more to a point where it is a
LOT.

Also the distance that these are gated may be an issue, someone gating
in their community/region has every right to do so if that is what the
locals want but when they are gated out and go out all over a state or
more than one state some may feel that is imposing someone elses want's
on their network.

For instance some may appreciate some local CW stations but I can care
less about conditions in TX, OR, MA etc. or the location of W1AW which
some people (more than one by the way) gateway to VHF.

Just in the past 2 days I saw a few different places where locals are
igating' seemingly random home stations from all over the country on to
VHF, don't hurt ? whell try to get a packet in edge wise that does not
collide while crossing the digi's area and see what happens. When you
have maybe 10-20 minutes at the most of digi coverage crossing a region,
conditions open up and digi's are loaded up with packets from
surrounding communities, a local is gating from the internet and you are
trying to get a 30w signal out at 70 mph with fading and 18 wheelers
blocking your signal you will see what I mean. It's not always that bad
but it can be and that is for a person who can send a packet on demand
or sends it out every minute. Take a mobile that sends out a packet at a
more rational 5 minutes and your success rate has just dropped to zip in
many cases.
