70-90% isopropyl alcohol, available at any drug store. Dirt cheap, and
works extremely well. Evaporates quickly, used it for 30 years.

If I remember right, isopropyl has a large water content. Wouldn't
'denatured' or just plain ethanol be better?

Yes it has a high water content, but this allows it to dissolve things
which straight alcohol would not.. I tend to use a mixture of denatured and
isopropyl for cleaning radio boards and housings at work. It makes a
solvent which dissolves most anything in the grime as well as pcb flux
department....The water content slows the evaporation rate, but is worth
the trade-off in dissolving more things...

Subject: 40m APRS frequency in Europe?

New Zealand and Australia have been experimenting on 40m and there has
been much discussion on the choice of frequency as the digital segment
in this region is different to that of the USA, and one idea is that we
use the same frequency as Europe. Can anyone confirm what 40m frequency
is used for APRS in Europe (actual RF pair preferably)?

Comments welcome.

I also use Isopropyl. But my application method is different, and somewhat
applicable to what you are doing with large qty of OpenTrak boards.

First of all, I have a rubbermade plastic dish that I fill with alcohol. I
let my boards presoak in this. Then, I take them out, and scrub them with a
toothbrush. Then, I have some fresh isopropyl alchol in a spray bottle, and
I spray the board down to get the residue off. I generally let the board
drain into the plastic dish, which is really just a presoak to loosen the
gunk off.

The above method is only really useful when doing alot of boards. But the
toothbrush really does help get them clean.

Well a container of 70-90% isopropyl alcohol is going to contain 10-30%
water. There is always Everclear, Everclear isn't going to have any
additives,so I keep a small bottle on hand to clean the occasional critical
adhesive surfaces. Everclear purchased at the liquor store is going to be
way too expensive for large cleaning jobs. Then there is that ration of
cr*p you get when those helping you recover tornado strewn belongings come
across the bottle.--73

Seasons greetings to all,

Ive been thinking about an additional option / parameter that perhaps could
be added to the current smartbeaconing implimentation. The thought is to be
able to have a parameter that would have an overriding effect on the
transmit rate based on the frequency or time duration of DCD activation. The
senario is as follows: If one was travelling along an express way, through a
city with high APRS activity at 100 plus Kms per hour, the mobile APRS
station could be beaconing once every 20-30 seconds or so. If there are a
number of mobiles travelling along the same expressway at a relatively high
speed, then we can see total congestion ocurring with only about 2 - 3
mobiles in the area. Alternatively, a couple of mobile stations winding
their way through city streets could also perhaps generate unaccepatably
high beacon rates. Conversly travelling at speed out on the open road where
there may be minimal APRS activity, one would summize that a fast
beaconinging rate of once per 20 seconds or so could be acceptable and
usefull. The idea would be to perhaps count the number of DCD activations
into the tracker within say a minute, and then use this number wthin the
smartbeaconing algorithm to slow down or speed up the beacon rate
accordingly. The algorithm could be relatively simple i.e..
(dcd count per minute x additional parameter) + current smart beacon rate =
new smart beacon rate
This of course could be a little too simplistic and may need additional
refinement to be of optimum benefit

Regards.. Andrew VK5EX
