I'm not sure I agree with everything that was said... Especially 5 and
8. I used to "chat" via HF APRS on 30 meters with a guy in Georgia and
Texas. It was quite fun! I always enjoyed seeing the mobile stations
and some of the houses that came up on HF.
Also, I thought that the HF gateways were supposed to work the same as
any other gateway, i.e. if you had a message destined for a station that
was on HF, the gateway was supposed to send that message over to HF from
VHF or the internet (#3).
Just my 2 cents worth...

Is there any thought to upgrading HF to one of the newer modems?

I think I posted a message about this before, but didn't get any response.
OpenTracker now supports basic APRS uncompressed position reports (see
N1VG-6 for example.) For the moment, it's using the TOCALL of APRS, but I'd
like a product-specific TOCALL. According to Bob's spec page, all of the
letters of the alphabet are allocated, and sub-allocations should be
coordinated amongst the developers. The TOCALL that makes the most sense to
me would be APOTxx, which falls under APRSPoint's allocation, but so far I
haven't had any response from KF6ZDM at aprspoint@yahoo.com. Does anyone
know how I can contact him?
Thanks.

Where can I find the molded combination 1/8 and 3/32 (?) inch connectors
used on speaker mics, short of cannibalizing a speaker mic? I find they're
more reliable than the separate connectors, but I've never seen one except
as part of a factory-build assembly.
Thanks...

Well, are they standard spacing? I suppose now they almost are.
But years ago I rigged up my Kenwood TR-2400 as a mobile with a 'bar' I
plugged in the side. I took a thin strip of plexiglass and drilled holes
where my Kenwood jacks were, then plugged in 'plugs' into the Kenwood.
Placed the strip over the plug with no covers, and made connections to the
plugs. Then got that stuff you encase coins in that forms 'blocks' of
lucite and gooped that over the strip. Once it set, I unplugged it, put
strips on either side and the ends and finished filling up the 'box'. I
ended up with a 'bar' that just plugged into the side of my Kenwood HT that
had all the connections I needed in one attachment.
You can do the same thing with 'RTV' or other silicon seals. Lay a strip
of wax paper over your HT or whatever you want to attach to, then 'plug in'
your plugs poking through the wax paper. Use something for edges for a
'form', and then fill it with goop.
A friend made a connector for his Garmin GPS that way but he wasn't totally
successful. But I've had good luck with 'plugs'.
Mike
