I guess that would be OK .. but, ya' know what I'd REALLY like Bob?
I'd like an upgrade to APRSDos ... put in all the bells and whistles and
don't give a damn about fitting it on a floppy.

APRS satellite users to join AMSAT
APRS has been involved on many satellites: AO16,IO26,SUNSAT,SAREX,MIR
ISS,PCSAT,SAPPHIRE,OPAL and satellites in work of PCSAT2,ANDE and some
university ideas.
Back in 1998 when the Kenwood D7 APRS HT came out and there were FIVE
potential digipeting satellites, Kenwood recalled it and re-released it as
the "G" model so that it would be comnpatible with both the 1200 the 9600
baud satellites then in orbit. There were FIVE! The idea was a handheld
"sat-communicator"...
and It WORKS!
But, now, all those satellites are dead and dying and not only the APRS
satellites but we have gone down from 18 working satellites then to less
than a half dozen now. The numbers of AMSAT members has also gone down
and with less than 0.005 of all HAMS being AMSAT contributors, it is hard
to make the case for MORE NEW Satellites to serve these exciting digital
modes.
We need to get more of the other .995 of HAM radio operators to join AMSAT
and help get those satellties built. As it is, many traditional AMSAT
members see no value in APRS and have no interest in adding APRS
transponders to new spacecraft. Conversly, I say that APRS is THE most
popular PACKET mode alive today!
BUT, the numbers dont show it. There is no statistic in AMSAT that shows
that there is any APRS interest in APRS via satellite.
Join AMSAT
This is an appeal to APRS operators who have experimented with APRS via
any of the satellites to JOIN AMSAT and help the other 0.005 HAMS keep
building more satellites. AMSAT is currently working on the final
software for the new ECHO satellite to launch in the next 3 months.
It is PERFECT for APRS with an 8 Watt transmitter that can EASILY serve as
a 9600 baud MOBILE satellite digipeater for APRS. But unless I can show
that there is "AMSAT" interest in APRS, then it is a hard sell for me to
get them to add APRS functionality.
The solution is simple. If you like APRS and want to support AMATUER
RADIO SATELLITES and see more APRS via satellite, then JOIN AMSAT!
See my thoughts on how we can use ECHO for APRS:
http:www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/echoaprs.html
And Join AMSAT! http://amsat.org
AMSAT needs about $100k to launch ECHO and getting a thousand more APRS
members in AMSAT could help raise some of that...
If you are a contributor to AMSAT, put it in your beacon. Show the flag!

Subject: What low current draw radio for solar powered site?

I have recently starting playing with APRS and am finding it loads of fun.
I help a bit with maintenance and financial support of a hilltop repeater
about 2.8 miles line-of-sight from a coastal house I have on the Oregon
Coast. This would be a very good APRS site to fill in a big coverage hole.
I would like to put an APRS digipeater up there and then run Xastir at my
house on the coast to get data on the Internet. As the site is completely
solar powered, and sits in coastal clouds a lot, current draw is a concern.
I don't need much transmit power to get down to my house. I very easily
work the repeater with a small HT running 300 milliwatts. I would think
that 5 watts out would be more than enough from that site.
I would like suggestions for a radio that I can put up at this site. A TNC
such as the KPC3 has an low power draw, so this presents no problems. What
would be a good choice for an reasonably inexpensive radio to put up there?
I recently bought an ICOM IC-2100H to run as an APRS unit in my car. Price
on that was $140 which doesn't seem too bad, but receive current drain is
listed in the manual as 0.8 amps - more than I would like. I haven't yet
measured it, but suspect that a mobile rig will be more than we would like.
I have an old ICOM 02AT clone, but I'm thinking that this likely has a
transmit relay that would eventually fail. Is this correct?
Any radio suggestions for solar-powered APRS sites?

IF I needed a low current, high reliablity transmitter, I would use
something crystal controlled.
No synth/PLL sucking down electrons... Perhaps a Hamtronics, use PIN Diodes
to switch... no relay to wear out.
Not as cheap as a 2AT, but the savings would be made in in reliablity...
battery life etc.
But that is IF I WERE DOING IT.

The Yaesu FT-1500M can be had for ~120. According the manual it's less
than 0.7A w/ signal, 0.3 squelched. Running a digi with open squelch is
popular with some people (in some cases it depends on the TNC too) so I'd
lean more towards that 0.7 figure, especially during peak useage periods.
You'll probably have to look at HT's then. Icom was selling a "sport"
model that some places were selling in the ~80 range with 6 watts of
output.
