Excellent!
I run an old 486 color laptop, directly from a 12V supply here at the house
or mobile. I prefer the DOS version's maps over the Windows version as do
many of the local users.
I belive I have Ver. 851 operating here.

I think this would be an excellent idea. Carrying it even further, I have a
couple of older laptops with monochrome cga displays and 2 720k floppies.
Can boot and get dos in some extra ram above 640, so would have 1.4 across
the two floppies.. would it be pretty easy to split the files and run it on
that type of hardware?
I like the "walk up and go" approach, for sure.

Yes, (I've run it on a 8088 laptop) but ... there is a display minimum also
..... What is it Bob?

Many modern computers no longer have the floppy drive selected in BIOS as a
boot device, or if it is it is *after* the hard drive and maybe even the CD
drive. Check the BIOS.

Yes, you just put the maps on Floppy B and everyting else on A. But you
have to edit the MAPLIST.XXX so that the file names include B: in them...

It used to run on CGA in black and white with 25 line display and EGA
and VGA in color with 43 line displays...

There are major problems with the aprsD APRS-1 server at the moment. If
you look at http://first.aprs.net:14501 you will see that NO users
connected are verified. I know for a fact that can't be right. Also,
Steve's stream stats page is showing a 300 packet discrepancy between first
and the other three core servers.

This was pretty slick for sending messages. It improved your chances of
getting a message through by not sending a messages along a path with
aliases.
One drawback - APRSdos "assumes" that when it sends the Unproto path
changes to the TNC that the changes actually took place. *wrong*
APRSdos needs to either send the Unproto command twice in a row or send it
and then verify that the changes actually took place. I know it takes
overhead to verify this, but IMHO this would certainly fix the problem of
the path disappearing within the TNC. Connect a KPC9612 and really see this
problem in all its glory.
Of course, this would certainly be a moot point *IF* aprsdos converted to
sending/receiving to the TNC in KISS mode.
>ALso it allowed you to set up percentages of the time to use any of the
>paths.
This was broken anyway. I used to use this function, but then discovered
after running this way for a day or two, that there actually was "no path"
within the TNC. I've tried this with a variety of tncs, and still have not
actually figured out why this happens. I *think* its a timing problem,
where the TNC doesnt actually come out of CONV mode to command mode quick
enough to receive the new Unproto command. Bob did change some of the
timing for APRSdos to wait before sending the commands, but it wasnt long
enough.
I've seen this happen with the U command. You type in a line, and then
watch the screen to see what comes back as the proto path in the status
boxes. Sometimes the path actually doesnt "take" in the TNC.
The only "workaround" was to never change the unproto path from APRSdos.
Hence, I had to quit using this alternate path function.
The other issue with this timing is that PC's now are much faster than the
XT's and early AT's. Timing wasnt an issue with 8 Mhz AT's - but now try
that with a 100-500 Mhz Junker PC and its a whole new issue.

ONLY because its actually "broken". Its still the most efficient way to
send messages with APRSdos. Sending a message to a particular station with
WIDEn-n isnt the best use of the network. You only hurt your chances of
getting the message through this way.
APRSdos does have its place. I wish extended memory could be utilized. SO
much more could be done with APRSdos - if it wasn't for the lack of memory.
Funny, as its very hard to find a machine in the junk pile that doesnt have
16 - 64 MB in it now days, as a minimum.

Both PM 5.0 and PM 6.0 work seamless with UI-View. You might consider
giving it a try!

Funny, cause first.nashvilleaprs.net (KG4NRC) thinks it's verified.
>I know for a fact that can't be right.
Agreed.
The other thing I found interesting was this:
aprsd 2.2.6-2
Dale's page for aprsd shows 2.1.5b10 as the current version.
It would appear that something is happening, we're still getting a full
feed from aprs-1.
Now, the question becomes, disconnect from first and connect to one of the
others?
