I would like to see APRSdos support KISS mode on TNCs. I keep all of my TNCs
in KISS mode at 9600bps so I can swap them to all the computers that might
run APRS. I currently run Xastir on Linux, but it would be great to be able
to grab a TNC and an old laptop and run with it.

That's probably the case, but the issue was mainly to address the
Un-Verified messages that that server is sending. I would be willing to
guess that the same trigger for those messages is also causing the status
page to show connections as being unverified.

First has been funning a 2.2.5 version of aprsD for well over a year now -
in the most recent months it's been 2.2.5-15. I notice quite a few aprsD
users are now running various 2.2.5 versions. I don't use aprsD software,
so I can't comment beyond that obvious that I have noticed.

The Tier 2 servers have had first removed from their lists for some time
now - in fact, when first initially tried to go to version 2.2.6, we made
the decision to not connect to first. The other cores use javAPRSSrvr,
which has been PROVEN to work beyond a reasonable doubt.

Does KISS mode work perfectly with the Kenwoods in the APRS application.
I know there are problems with using KISS mode in them for other packet
applicaitons that need high throughput and binary applications, but in
single-packet at a time UI stuff for APRS, are there any known problems?

Mostly the OPS-DIGI list and its overhead. Remember the OPS digi list
allows you to change your outgoing path on the fly with just a 2-key
shortcut to any of 15 different paths.

I doubt anyone really used that stuff anymore... I dont...

*****
Actually, I use this feature all the time with my home station. I rotate
among the local Digis (DIGICALL,Wide2-2) so that if one goes down, I'm
getting something out part of the time. Also have some pre-programmed
paths for events such as Hamvention (DIGICALL ONLY) and for ARES
activations.

Will have to double check, but I believe that my TNC is picking up the path
changes (MFJ1270C), at least the comebacks on my packets seem to reflect
it.

But for a "come as you are" ARES activation and Public Service Events, I'd
be using a generic path anyway, so this feautre would not be neccessary for
the Floppy version.

Sounds reasonable enough. I'm trying to determine if a WinAPRS user
that's been connected to first.nashvilleaprs.net was seeing those messages
since first.nashvilleaprs.net was connected to first.aprs.net (yes, we're
thinking about renaming our servers to something better like bna1, bna2).

Aha! I did not realize it had a Sourceforge page now.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/aprsd/

Let's not start a flame war over this. Some of us choose to use aprsd
because it has worked well in the past and provided they get these latest
?bugs? fixed will probably continue to work well. I've had good uptimes
with the (now very old) version of aprsd I've been running.

I've tried installing Sun Java stuff and their installer stinks.
Besides, I don't forsee a the java stuff fitting onto a floppy anytime
soon and deploying linux based igates that can run off a floppy is one of
my projects. (apropos given Bob's thread about putting together an
APRSdos floppy). Note, the nashvilleaprs.net servers are running on full
installs with harddrives.

I went ahead and promoted fouth.aprs.net to the top of my hub list since
it's sitting on an I2 connection (as does first.aprs.net) and
first.nashvilleaprs.net has I2 connection capabilities.

It works fine --BUT-- in KISS mode you lose the GPS feedthrough function
(that echos data received at the dedicated GPS port out the main data port
of the Kenwoods) .

You will need a second serial port on the PC to connect the GPS (if used)
directly.

APRSdos with KISS will be very useful. That would make it trivial to run
along with other applications and not have to deal with the various TNC
incarnations.

I'd still like to have the old presentation scripting options. It was great
to have APRSDOS running through various displays automatically. I had it
on one channel on the TV and I could "surf" over and watch as APRSDOS
cycled through its displays.
