From what I understand, the only laptop applications on the near horizon
are to power a 'docking station', not the laptop by itself. Besides, a lot
of the planes now are going to power available at the seats anyway.

Why do I need a fuel cell in my docking station?

I'm sure there are good applications for fuel cells, but the "killer app"
for them would have been long run laptop usage.. Millions of units, and
users with relatively deep pockets used to paying >$100 for a single
battery.

A few years back i saw a set of instructions for making your own fuel cells
(each cell about a gallon) that would run on methyl alcohol. Emergency
power supply for the shack? It did involve some things you can't
manufacture easily at home, like you have to buy metal mesh and have it
commercially plated with platinum, and i don't know who does plating like
that. Initial investment, and hopefully it lasts for years, just stock up
on methyl alcohol.

Ah, my 1964 High School science project. But that was the key...
platinum! (more expensive than gold....)

What about multiple funcitons from the same station? What icon should be
used and how does one make mention of the other functions so that they are
identifiable too?

TraceN-N Digipeater + IGate + HFGate + EOC = what symbol?

I ask out of ignorance.

Hi Jim,
I'm scratching my head on this. I don't understand how to determine this
easily. If my station has the following running simultaneously:
o HF Gate (30m<>2m)
o IGate
o SatGate
o TRACEn-N digipeater

What would be the "primary purpose" symbol?

Hi:
I'm running my 1270C on HF packet.
It will NOT drive the xmtr in my 746 well enough to get it to put out any
power.
I have TRIED to adjust R-157 but it has LITTLE if ANY effect.
Anyone know how I can adjust something in the 1270C to get it to drive the
HF better....the signal level to the audio line just ain't cuttin' it.
(on a LIGHTER note:
I AM getting about FIVE WATTS out of the IC-746, which is ENOUGH to connect
to KR4MA on 7.101.0Mhz...Kool:

One commercial manufacturer (GE?) has a kilowatt-scale hydrogen fuel cell
out now, with a low-pressure version coming soon for home use. (Why low
pressure? It's not like one more compressed gas cylinder in my garage is
going to make much difference...) It was around $5k, way more than you'd
pay for a comparable gasoline generator, but it can be run indoors.

As for homebrew stuff, you'd probably get more bang for the buck using
lemons, considering the cost of platinum and such. Though if you really
want to do that, I've found you can get much better output from a stack of
zinc and copper electrodes separated with paper towel and soaked in vinegar.
Yeah, it'll be nice when the cell phone and laptop manufacturers start
putting out high efficiency miniature fuel cells, but it's taking them a
long time to get the required power density. At least the fuel is fairly
easily storable.

How many watts do you think you could get out of a bottle of Jose Cuervo?

Subject: Aprs DOS GPS String questions
From: "Michael Glennon" <kb4jhu@arrl.net>

I need a refresher on GPS Strings and how APRS DOS handles them. I
purchased one of the cheap GPS receivers from Radio Shack (20-1601 PDA
version). I made the cable for a 9 pin RS-232 and that is putting out both
GGA and RMC strings. I'm using one of the 386 touch computers using the
second serial port for the GPS. This is what I'm seeing and need some help
from the SIG to figure it out.

When I use $GPGGA in Normal APRS DOS mode (should provide me with position
and height). <not getting height information>

$GPGGA Compressed APRS String (should provide me with position and height)

When I use $GPRMC (should provide me with position, course and speed)
I have also set up APRS DOS in Both (GGA and RMC) mode and I get the below.
What make the statement state "old RMCs fix"?

KB4JHU-2>APRB03,RELAY,WIDE3-3/1:@071418z3523.10N/08612.02WC033/000/APRS*/old
RMCs fix/A=001026

----------------------

My goal is to send out position, course, speed and height information. I
have plans to use this as a tracker APRS unit. Can someone give me the
knowledge to fix this using APRS DOS and set it up correctly?

No, not ethyl alcohol. The one i saw ran on methyl alcohol, the kind of
alcohol that makes you go blind if you drink it.

As far as the platinum-plated electrodes, it probably doesn't involve that
much platinum metal. Tiny fractions of an ounce. But still an investment
-- labor cost for the plating.
