Subject: tm-d700A / Peet Ultimeter question

I am setting up a weather station using an Ultimeter 800, PK-96 TNC, and a
HT. I have the Ultimeter set for packet data mode on the serial port
($ultw). Weather data is getting to findu.com. However, when I try to
monitor my station on my D-700A, located in my car, (in my garage) I only
receive position beacons -- not weather data. Is there any reason why the
D700 would not be able to receive the $ultw sentence?
Any suggestions or assistance is appreciated.

Sounds like you don't have any other (base) APRS station to check it with.
I'm pretty sure the problem is that (like APRSDos) WX data *must* be in the
position packet, not sent seperately.

It should! The "N" overlay character in its position report should _only_
designate a full featured WIDEn-N digi with "NOID."

Thanks, I looked at their WXTrak product. I assume that should work also.

Yes, Kenwood doesn't support that mode, or the !! mode. If you want to see
the weather on a D7(00), you need to have a setup that uses a "normal" APRS
packet. Cheapest is to replace the TNC with a Tinytrack with weather
firmware, see byonics.com

The real issue at hand here is that the D700, which I also have, does not
have the ability to decode the weather packets of a Peet Bros (we have set
up several U2100 sites in N. Alabama) like findu, APRSdos, APRS+SA, etc.
To display on the D700, it must be in one of the weather formats specified
in the APRS protocol, which is an ASCII text packet as opposed to the
hexadecimal format transmitted by the Peet Bros unit.
Aside from the APRSdos, APRS+SA, etc. there are programs to decode the data
in the software section of the TAPR site some requiring more effort than
others to get it into the ASCII text format prior to transmission.
I'd be interested in knowing of any simple code (inexpensive and preferably
complete) that can be used in between the Peet Bros and a TNC (basic stamp
approach, etc) to convert the "data logging" mode (as opposed to packet
mode) data into the equivalent APRS protocol specification. Many of our
stations are at digipeater sites so we have both weather and digi functions
going on so it would be nice to send a packet preformated to the TNC for
transmission.

Kenwoods have problems with one or some of the weather stations data. They
can't decode it(or at least my older Kenwoods can't). Do recent issues of
Kenwoods or upgraded A/G HT's and D700 mobiles decode all WX station data
and I am not aware?

Yes, that is what I mean, it is a tinytrak with different firmware.

Yes, from day one, my recommendatin for such a Mic-E TNC was to use the
CALLSIGN of the FREQUENCY of the repeater for the callsign of the TNC.
That way, when a packet was injected onto APRS 144.39, it would contain IN
THE DIGIPEATER FIELD (because of callsign substitution), the frequency of
origination...
Done. No muss no fuss and nothing new to add to the protocol...
