Sitting here in Atlanta, it is heart wrenching to see the destruction and
devastation from the fires in California.
Through my visits, I have come to love the Lake Arrowhead/Crestline area
with all the beautiful trees.
My heart goes out to all who are suffering through the California
fires. My thanks go to the relentless firefighters and emergency workers.

Some of you may recall that once upon a time I had a small N4NEQ digi up in
the San Bernardino Mountains near Lake Arrowhead.
Operation transferred to WB6ZSU several years ago and the call changed to
N6EX-2

Reports have it that fire burned almost up to the home where the digi is
(up at 5000 ft or so) but that the home still stands. I don't know for sure.
Many nearby homes have burned.

We haven't heard from the Digi since about Saturday, but another radio at
the site was still working a day or 2 ago (it had a big bank of batteries)
So let's keep our fingers crossed for everyone and everything up in the hills.

Here's hoping that we see a position update on this link
soon! http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=N6EX-2

The best site I have found for info on the area is
http://www.rimoftheworld.net

Holy Cow!! Good news indeed.

What're the new commands? APRS related?

It sure looks like the online PDF manual for the KPC3+ has been updated
to "ver9" as well! Time to start reading....

http://www.kantronics.com/downloads/pdf/KPC-3P_Manual_ver9.pdf

Here's hoping they got the minor bugs squashed as well!!

The APRSWXNET/CWOP data are going to all NWS Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs)
in the Western Region. The data are displayed directly on the AWIPS
terminals used by all of the on-line forecasters. You can see data relating
to the Southern California fires here,

http://www.met.utah.edu/droman/gacc/socc_firemap.html

I just looked at the number of surface reports within 25 miles of each of
the fires and found that APRSWXNET/CWOP is contributing about 13% of the
surface data available to NWS forecasters. Here are the numbers for each of
the fires where the first number is the number of APRSWXNWT stations and the
second is the total number of surface stations within 25 miles of the fire
location:

Simi-incident 3/27
Piru 3/17
Old_fire 3/26
Grand_prix 4/32
Padua 5/37
Paradise 3/20
Cedar 2/18

IMO, this a significant impact for an all-volunteer effort. You can see
more about where the APRSWXNET/CWOP stations are located through the URL
below.

Hello All,

I sent the following email to Kantronics on the 28th, still no answer.
Their support sucks, why do we keep buying them??? When asked about an
EPROM for an old TNC they just said "Buy a new TNC" Why should we buy a new
dump truck if all we need is a new tire for the old wheelbarrow? As you can
see I have upgraded a FEW times! I even still have the first TAPR 1 TNC
that I built way back when. Not to mention 2 Heathkit clones of the TNC1.
Still has the best audio to be found....

Let me know what you find out on the command changes.

Thanks, Shanon KA8SPW

Hello,

I just received a new KPC3+ from Dentronics. It has version 9.0 firmware.
What is the differences between this new version and my other KPC3+ Version
8.3? I searched the CD manual last night for over an hour and could not
find the info. I have also searched your web site, nothing found. Do you
have a description somewhere of what was changed or fixed in a version??
There was no warranty card in the box. Do I need to register or is it
automatic with a copy of a receipt?

Thanks, Shanon

By the way I own the following TNC's

2 KPC2's
1 KPC3
2 KPC3+
1 KAM
1 KAM+
1 Weather UTU

1 Tiny Tracker 3

1 Tiny2 (by that other company)

What ever happened to the Crystal Set Society newsletter, I was a subscriber
long ago?
