Dear John,
Many thanks for your detailed mail. I appreciate your deep knowldege in
this field. I would do some modifications(play with baud rates
1200/2400/4800) and then revert back to you with my bit error rate results,
with your kind permission. I will like to implement the VHf based GPS\AVl
solution in Industrial steel plants and mines. Can you give name of some
professional sites, who have the hardware for the purpose. Software , we
will write on our own.

Because they made a product that was not a TNC-2 and we all got used to the
extra commands. Now, nobody else has all the extra commands and Kantronics
has a captive market, so to speak.

These TNC's make excellent full-function digis, or whatever you'd like to
do with them. Just put a KISS-chip in and it'll do anything a TNC-2 will
do. I used this with an HD-4040 for YEARS, until something fried in the
Heathkit and it wasn't worth fixing any more.

I notice there is a RANGE command which does mX+b slop / offset for a/d
values.
John.... I told you to use UIDIGI RELAY, WIDE, SC earlier today.... it is
UIDIGI ON RELAY,WIDE,SC

Bob, this command is non-intuitive. Please consider LOCKED instead. It
means something to humans.

darn it, but I can't find my actual measurment for the low power one that I
made for high altitude balloon flights, but I made it with 10k ohm
resistors so just a little power would go to the LEDS, I want to say it was
around 12mA draw, bottom line, it did work for a week of 24/7 operation on
one Lithium 9V battery.

That's why I won't ever buy anything from them in the future. At least,
not without a LOT of investigation.
I picked up an old KPC-3 a while ago for $50 with OLD firmware.
At least at the time I could get a firmware upgrade. Know what it
cost? $50! Plus the shipping and handling! I could have picked up
an almost BRAND NEW but used KPC-3 for MUCH less!
What a mistake. I'll never consider Kantronics again for ANY of
my needs unless it's an only choice, and even then...
Shame is, it's a good quality unit.
But on a 'practical' side, now that the support is officially gone, you'll
probably see a lot of piracy and 'swapping' of the firmware going on, now
that no 'legitimate' upgrade path exist for the older units. I'm not
saying it's right, but it will be a fact of life.

Yeah, I wonder who's mistake it was! <g>
Welp, I suppose everyone should still be running AM with their old Gonset
Communicators.
I mean, why would you need to buy a new 2m radio if you can still get the
2E26 tubes!
I need to go oil my Model 15 teletype and tighten the bolts holding it all
to the floor....73.

I dont know. LOCKED doesnt give me any clear meaning in this context.
Locked where? On VHF? On UHF? On APRS? It is totally ambiguous..
NOAUTO means NO AUTOMATIC routing. I can't imagine anything more
direct and descriptive..

I noticed Kenwood hasn't updated their site to show the new TM-271 2m rig
either. I compared the KPC3+8.3 commands to the version 9 command set. Lot
of new ones plus several updates to the older set. There is now a set of
commands to remote control a GPS.

The same can be conjectured about NOAUTO. No auto what? No auto forward
to the APRS stream? No auto start GPS? No auto respond to queries? etc.
The fact that we're dealing with the UNPROTO path (and that LOCKED appears
in the UNPROTO area), LOCKED means that the UNPROTO should "stay locked"
just as the launching station launched it and not be changed by any
appliance in the network. In effect, the UNPROTO is LOCKED as launched.
eg - if the UNPROTO is LOCKED, then...
skip any UNPROTO modifying subroutines AND process the frame as RX'd
