Do you mean a source other than *the* source??

I am very happy with my deluo and TTx3. Th combined package was less than
$200

DOH!!

Now I get it - sorry. Yea, they do seem rather insistant on bundling
something with their recievers don't they.

Earl, I'd have to look at the schematic to determine that. If the pl tone
circuits mute it, then it's not raw discriminator audio and there is gate in
the way. I'd look at the print and see where this gate is and pick off the
other side of it...closer to the discriminator.

It's not possible. In the day of surface-mount designs, we're talking robots
to assemble products of any sophistication, and the setup charges are quite
hefty. (I'm not talking about a PIC on a Perf).

Software yes, hardware (mostly) no. Someone still has to shell out money to
the hardware houses (they don't do open source).

It's basically a retread of ax.25 simplex digipeater with a different data
protocol, right? New baud rate? New band? How does it push the current
technology? Will it be better than a (non-open source) GPS cell phone? :-)

It's a one-chip design. Probably shuts down the whole squelch section.

That's why I said whenever possible. Often it's not. But software defined
radios let us minimize the amount of hardware that needs to be fabricated.
And I've seen some rather complex circuits reflow soldered in a toaster
oven.

Very true, though there is a growing open hardware movement.

I'm the first to admit that it's nothing new. I'm not a research scientist,
and I'm not even an electrical engineer. I'm just trying to get some useful
tools out there for people to build on. Just because it doesn't push the
envelope doesn't mean it can't serve a useful purpose.

And as for the cell phone comparison, I've got a Motorola phone that runs
Qualcomm's BREW. It's got tons of memory and processing capacity, but you
know what? It doesn't do me a damn bit of good because I can't write code
for it without spending thousands on development tools and code signing
fees. And do you think what the service providers charge for SMS messages
has any relation to what it actually costs to provide the service?
