We've got something else out here in the NorthWest that might be worth
consideration. We've currently got two of our major sites running it and a
couple more coming. It counts packets heard at each site and generates an
hourly web page based on packets counted. At the end of the day the
'winner' gets a nice polite little message that says, "You're todays
winner! If you're out driving and making lots of packets great! if you're
house hasn't moved in years please consder reducing your beacon rate." Or
words to that affect. If Bill, WA7NWP, is on here perhaps he can produce
the text of the message. After all, he wrote it. Take a look at:

There are lots of Basic Stamps that do FREQOUT

Could you use this for packet tones ?

It appears the area filter quit working on the APRS2.NET servers. I wasn't
getting any traffic from the Internet. I changed to the range filter and I
started receiving again.

I disagree.
That's 3 out of the total 10 message memory of my Kenwood mobile and HT.
I simply dont like having my APRS message system filled up all the time
with 30% SPAM.

No, it adds 30% SPAM to everyone who uses the system and adds to great
frustration of the 90% of everyone who doesnt need it!

No, having APRSsteward is akin to having the radio "media idiots" telling
me on my radio where to turn and how to drive.

Can AGM Sealed "non-spillable" Batteries be mounted / operated on their
side... instead of right side up?

I figure there's somebody out there who knows LOTS about this type of
battery (from a small UPS)...

Similarly...

As a sanity check, for a 10Watt transmitter (FT-1500M in less than full
power mode), will a 7.5Ah AGM battery have any problems... if it beacons
a position every two minutes (on a racing sailboat)....

Finally...

What is the least groundplane that I can get away with for the above
xcvr... when the antenna is a dual-band mag mount... where the radiator
is 19" high....

TNX in advance..

APRS on AO-40:

You see why I think we should put APRS on AO-40. See this email:

There wasn't any activity on the bird! I got home from work about 06:20Z
and called CQ for maybe a half hour with no answer. The beacon was loud,
my signal was OK, there was one other QSO going, and that was it.

It's not the propagation, there's just nobody on the air !

To which server are you connecting? It looks like indiana.aprs2.net is
down, but the others are working fine on my end. I can connect a receive
data from the 14580 ports. Also, at what time did you notice?

I don't want to speak for Roger, but according to his stats page his server
has only been up for about 13 hours now (19:00 GMT now), so it appears that
it was down when you posted this message. In the future, simply try
connecting to one of the other servers to see if there is something wrong
on your end.

Transmit duty cycle is less than 1%. 10W of RF takes probably 30W of DC
power. At 1%, thats only about 0.3W average TX power. Average RCV power
is probably much worse, at say 6 Watts (0.5amp at 12 volts). Total power
needed then is about 7 Watts average power. Your battery provides 7.5 *
12 or about 90 Watt hours. So should be good for about 10 Hours...

Notice, its not the transmitter at all. Its the receiver that determines
battery life in most APRS applications....

For our sail boats, we just taped a 2m dipole made out of wire inside the
sailboat cabin to the roof and on every pass of PCsat, we would get a
position from the Kenwood D7 running only 5W. But then that is UP. You
need to tape your dipole vertically. Also, it doesnt get wet, and does
not get in the way of the crew...

What was your filter setting (prefer to have what was reported on the
server's status page as that indicates what javAPRSFilter accepted)?
All of the servers have been running the latest server and filter
software for over a week (most for over two weeks).

I did a quick study of specs from the ARRL's website. I thought that I'd
publish some of my findings for the benefit of others on ths SIG. The
chart below is sorted by TXDelay (shortest to longest) according to the
ARRL's review of the transceiver.

Fascinating. Need more info on these or other transceivers? Hit the ARRL
member's only website. There are advantages to being an ARRL member. :)
