On average I get about 150 SPAM e-mails a day. I've learned to quickly
scan and dump. I'm sure I miss an occasional valid one. E-mail is
impersonal and seen only by the receiver.

On the other hand, an APRS message may not be ignored so easily. If nothing
else, it will be seen by several in the receiving area; let's call it peer
pressure.

I guess an automated APRS message to someone with a 'silly' path will cause
some QRM, but what is it trying to quell? QRM. If it is effective then the
QRM will diminish as will the automated messages.

What is the point here? I think it is to reduce the number of people using
dumb/stupid/silly paths that affect others. How else are they going to
learn if it isn't through some means that puts them in the public eye?
(Some of these folks are downright rude.)

IMHO - The arguments for passive-aggressive actions are flawed and do not
address the problem. Creating localized paths and modifying DIGI code will
only have a short term effect; even though I think localizing paths is a
cool idea. Some folks do not know any better, others do not care. Ways
will be found around the 'barriers'. In APRS, peer pressure may go a long
way.

If an automated message to the Wide7-7 folks helps me use the digi during
the next event then I'm all for it. Obviously the 'word' has not been
spread enough during APRS lifetime.

If an automated message causes to much QRM, the it could be turned off. But
where is the problem? Address the problem.

Vince

Having a single well-placed station TX 3 BLN:-frames that tell people how
to setup their stations for maximum local channel efficiency and doing so
once every x-minutes (the actual TX-interval is driven by the LAN's need
for getting the information publicized) is hardly "unnecessary QRM".

It is a necessary, prudent and almost 'cost-free' use of APRS technology
and infrastructure that will result in better channel utilization and
significantly increased new-user satisfaction.

APRS without RF-based APRSteward's in each LAN is akin to the Interstate
highway system without traffic signs.

I agree it is rarely done but I have heard of it done in the past for just
such cases like this. It was a long time ago I don't remember exactly when.

The way they made this storm sound like it was HUGE, I don't think the DOD
was going to stop at anything to protect themselves from having so many
birds go dead at one time. Sure it was a gamble if it WOULD happen or not
but think of the concenquences if it did!

I bet most people use findu. How about when someone looks up a call sign on
findu and there is an issue with the path, display a comment like the
following on the page:

"NOTE: This call sign is using a path that may cause unneccessary
interference, disrupting the proper operation of APRS.

If this is your call sign please see (link to page on recommended paths) for
information on recommended path settings.

If you know the person who has this call sign, please pass this information
along.

Thanks for helping making the APRS experience better for us all."

Id' put it at the top, so it can't be missed.

That's a good thing, too. Imagine, missing a couple of payments, and some
guy shows up with a flatbed in the middle of the night and hauls your
satellite off to an impound orbit...

FWIW - I think this is a great idea - Your choice of words & the message
are thoughtful.

I have seen this problem a number of times. In my case it has always turned
out to be that the radio volume control is set to minimum. When that
happens, the radio receives the data, the TNC also senses the data but the
computer does not hear the data.

Check your volume control and set it about mid point. If that is not it,
then check your cable between the TNC and Computer. It might be loose or
damaged.
