May I sgugest taht the alais of "LOCKED" is more dsercpitvee of the aciton?
It smees mroe intuitive, epsecailly snice it will porbably be fuond in the
vrey UNPROTO that one hopes to remian "locked".

I presume so.
In my system, I make a list of what commands suit the application.
Then I add whatever flow control is needed, like skip +/- N commands, or
skip if input pin active, etc.
With the list, I try to compress it to a binary number, like 16 or 32 commands.
Each command takes the form of <CMD><PARM1>..<PARMn>
Where CMD is the command byte, and PARM is an optional parameter byte.
Some commands have no parameters, they are immediate mode.
The tricky bit is the engine.
You always start at zero, and that is a command.
After a reset, the first action is always to run the first command.
That command knows how many parms it has, and it does it's thing, and
leaves you pointing at the next command.
The fun comes in when you need to skip commands.
What I do is maintain a command counter byte, and a "cmd wanted" byte,
which I add or sub to, to point to the next command.
Say I want to skip -5 (the hardest case)
The skip command sets a flag that tells the commands to "Scan" rather than
execute.
You then start at zero, with each command scanning it's parms, instead of
acting on them, until the cmd counter equals the cmd wanted counter, then
you reset the scan flag, and the next command, which is the one you wanted,
is executed.
I have this all coded for the AVR, and I have a version that's just the
basic structure, and a few example commands already coded, which I give out
as open source.
If you want to see an earlier project that I worked on like this, it's at
http://www.verifone.com/support/documents/
The TCL programmer's manual is the main doc.
This is a Z-80 system, which keeps everything in RAM, and the interpreter
is in a 32k Rom, all coded in assembler.

There ya go. I sold my pic tools a long time ago, after doing a couple of
projects with the AVR.

I worked 3rd shift today and saw the report on the news before I left
the house at 23:30. Interesting thing is that when I got in the truck it
took a very long time for me to get a lock on my GPS 5. The antenna is a
26db gain NMO mount on the roof with low loss cable and I normally get
10 sats within seconds. Last night it took about 4 minutes and I only
locked on 4 sats, later on at about 02:00 I got 6 and by 05:00 I had 9.
I don't know if it was the flare but I am wondering if the DOD
re-positioned the birds to avoid any possible damage from the storm. I
am guessing that the data in the GPS would have been in error from
earlyer in the day and that was the cause of the slow lock and even
slower search of the balance of the birds.
Any other night crawlers out there that saw the same thing ??

Ev,
I agree for fixed stations but for mobiles I think it promotes different
UNPROTO settings for each LAN. That is unacceptable for those of us who
travel extensively. We need a single setting that will be most likely to
hit an IGATE. Check W4VOR-9 track for last two weeks and I will leave for
home tomorrow. I used Relay Wide2-2.

No way I know to do any sort of repo of these birds... they are going
to have to deal with it just like almost every other satellite in
existence...
Gerry has forgottem more about these platforms than most of us will ever
know...
A significant reposition of any satellite is rarely done once it
achieves it's operational orbit... station keeping on geosynchronous
birds is a different matter... but this often relatively small changes -
unless the bird is to replace a "dead" one... and those movements
typically take many days...

Absolutly. We are in complete agreement. The "details" of what the
APRSteward displays can be argued until the cows come home.
The point of new thread was that we have the ability to educate our users
right at our fingertips. We're simply not taking advantage of it.

And in preparation to offload many components currently engine driven to
electric power. That is: power steering, brakes, water pump, etc. There
are already a handful of cars using electric power steering. Electric
water pumps use about 1/6 the power required for a current engine/belt
driven counterparts and could be programmed to post-cool engines
(especially turbocharged ones) after shut down. This will be important in
cars that have a stoplight shutdown feature. Also 42v will allow cars to
have electrically controlled variable valve timing. This should eek out a
little more MPG.

I read that a major factor is that the starter and generator/alternator
will be the same device... with 42V systems that is.... and then it's an
easy leap to the "starter" mode actually boosting power under hard
acceleration....
Interestingly enough... everyone says 12V and 42 V.... but if I'm not
mistaken... the typical battery is more often measured to be around
13.8V... so if the 43V system scales similarly... ( (13.8/12) * 42V) =
48.3 V.... so in reality the measured voltage might actually be more
like 48V ?????
All that being said... I also read that it's going to be a decade at
least that the new vehicles maintain a 12V (13.8V?) accessory feed... to
accomodate lots of the existing 12V equipment in the system (radios)...
SO... our existing radio equipment will continue to work with APRS (have
to keep the thread APRS related ;)
