Thanks for the web pointer, I'll definitely keep the audio markup in
mind! At the time, it seemed like a good route to go for high quality
power parts. These are the actually the exact fuse holders I got from
the audio place and I second your comments, I've been VERY happy with
them. I also agree with your assesment of wire. Although I didn't
purchase it from an audio place, I did see what they used and went
hunting for a place I could get the wire cheeper. It's definitely nicer
than working with the comparatively rigid wire you will find in most
electronics/home stores.

I haven't been following this thread too closely, but I take it LAN and
REGION aren't literals - they're supposed to be 'CENCAL' or 'VA' or
something. How about changing the notation to something like <REGION> to
distinguish these from literal strings?

RFONLY is perfectly descriptive of what the TXing stations operator intends
to happen. NOGATE can be downright misleading (there are many kinds of
GATEways [HFGates, SatGATES, IGates, etc.] -- NOGATE only impacts IGate
function). We have two because APRS hasn't abandoned NOGATE yet. <grin>
Thankfully, the APRS authors incorporated RFONLY to shut me up (and thank
you for that!). :)
For the record, before RFONLY, the ARRL's Contest Desk said that simplex
APRS could not be used to support VHF Contesting. After it was introduced
and an education plan was executed, they changed their mind. It is a term
that they understood.
Do a Google search on "CU2QSO" (Simplex, All-RF [RFONLY] APRS to support
VHF Contesting) if you're interested.
Also, for the record, RFONLY should be broadened to mean, "Do not send this
frame to any non-RF system". It makes even more sense withing the context
of the November 2003 QST, Page 104.

It's a literal to me. The Smart Digi could change it to a regional alias
if that's what's desired. The user driving through would never have to
change the tracker settings.

I thought that your proposal was to assume that Smart-routing will take
place only if requested by the transmitting station, otherwise, no UNPROTO
re-writing would occur. If that's still true, then NOAUTO is not
necessary.
If your proposal was to assume that Smart-routers will - as a default
setting - relaunch frames with the shortest path to an IGate, then, IGATE
is not necessary and NOAUTO becomes useful again.
What is your intent, Bob? I'm a bit confused, but trying to understand.
Ev, W2EV
PS...What is "NOAUTO" an abbreviation for? Maybe that is part of my
confusion. I'd think that the alias should be something like "LOCKED"
(meaning the UNPROTO should not be changed).

Well I'm just sharing what I was told, and my experience. Again that
was multiple vehicles and batteries and solenoids before going to the
isolator design in several vehicles. Since those installations, I've
not had a battery issue with the aux battery. Your individual mileage
may vary.

p.s. And to think people thought the Anderson Power Pole thread lived to
long!
desnipped**************
We ain't dead yet, when this thread is resolved (unlikely), we will then
discus what kind of battery to tie to the Rig Runners with the APPs.
I bought a deep discharge battery today for my tractor and it will be used
on my UPS system during the time of year the tractor is idle and ice storms
are about. It will have APPs while inside driving my Peet Brothers APRS
weather station through snow, sleet, ice and maybe even lightning.
FWIW, for about three years, I had free replacement batteries due to leaving
my tracker on over the weekend and totally discharging the battery. I
recently did it again but it was out of the 100% replacement window. The
batteries would continue to work for a short time after recharge but never
hit 12 volts again, measured by my mobile rig. They would stop one cell
short of a full charge (you heard it here first) and shortly thereafter
belly up completely.

I used to work as a tech. We had broke amps come in with bigg yellow
extention cords for speakers. One even had electric welder wire. But
some of this stuff about wire and batteries is rediculus. And very few
even know what they are talking about.

Wow, you sure taught me! Obviously you used to work as a tech.
(whatever that means). Care to enlighten any of us on our mistakes or
just call us all fools?
