You can find the PMAP_OCX.zip file at
http://www.winaprs.com/downloads/
Unzip it to find the files within.
For Windows2000 with Precision Mapping 3 you'll have to edit the PMAPOCX.BAT
file and add a Windows98 version of a file named MFCANS32.DLL. For use with
Precision Mapping 3 at least, WinAPRS 2.5.1 is still the preferred version.
If you've stuck the MFCANS32.DLL from Windows98 into the same (Windows2000)
folder that you unzipped PMAP_OCX.zip to, then you can edit the PMAPOCX.BAT
file to look something like:
copy MFCANS32.DLL c:\windows\system32\MFCANS32.DLL
copy MAPOCX.OCX c:\windows\system32\MAPOCX.OCX
copy OC30.DLL c:\windows\system32\OC30.DLL
c:
cd \windows\system32
Regsvr32 MAPOCX.OCX
The _process_ is similar to that (shown below) from
http://www.winaprs.com/WAPRSdoc.htm#PrecMap
Installing Precsion Mapping on WindowsNT
The following was provided by Jerry, KB4OAM
Install PM 3.0/3.5 per the CD instructions
Create a new \DATA2 folder and a \STATES folder
Copy the desired 'state' files off the \STATES folder on the CD to the
\STATES folder on the hard drive (12.zpx for Florida)
Download the PMAP30.OCX file from Mark's Rutgers site, and unzip it (using
the -d option)
Edit the PMAPOCX.BAT file, to change all '\windows\' calls to '\winnt\'
Find a copy of MFCANS32.DLL (from a Win95 machine) and copy it to the
\winnt\system\ directory
Run the PMAPOCX.BAT file (it should complete with a 'success' message
Start WinAPRS, and under the 'Windows' pull-down, select 'New Map Prec Map'
Click on the OPT box, and enter the letter of the hard drive where you
earlier created the \states\ folder.
Have fun. Hope this helps.

I am looking for recommendations for a remote speaker for my dual-band
APRS mobile.
Anyone got a favorite source or make / model?

Yes! The motorola speakers are far and away the best there are. I use the
giant (maybe 4.5 square inches) speakers from Mitreks. They are designed
to sound good when they are loud, and they really do.

I'll second the Motorola recommendation. If the "normal" M speakers are too
big, they also make a compact variety that's much smaller (2"x4"?) and
works quite well. Part is SSN4005A, if I recall correctly.

I think you'll find that just about ANY external speaker will dramatically
improve the audio performance of ANY mobile or handheld radio.
Yes, some external speakers are better than others, but the big difference
is in getting the external speaker to begin with.
Personally, I now use the little 'cube' from RS in most applications. Years
ago RS used to sell these TINY stereo speakers for 'on' the rear deck of a
car. I used to use those. Now the little cube from RS fits just snugly
sitting on the dash at the drivers cowl-post.
In my Intrepid, I just lifted up the top of the dash (it just 'snaps' up)
and found that there was a 'center' speaker for the high end Infinity sound
system that wasn't installed. OK, I should have called it a 'speaker
spot'. Anyway, I just found a RS raw speaker that fit in the spot, and fed
the wires to my remote mounted Alinco dual-band in the trunk. It's hard to
describe how nice it sounds, with a small speaker pointing 'up' at this
HUGE windshield bouncing the sound back at you!
You know, you might just want to investigate what you can do in your car
with an 'install' before you consider what speaker to add on, and then try
to fit a 'speaker box' somewhere in the drivers area...

Anyone try this combination successfully? I hated to sell my old HP200
because it had a real live PCMCIA slot AND a serial port. Now I'm thinking
it might be an affordable portable solution.

With an external SanDisk compact flash (I have 20 MB) in the PCMCIA slot,
this makes a nifty portable system.
AprsDos runs fairly well though the map redraws are painfully slow.
Unfortunately, AprsDos doesn't support KISS interface so I'm using
it less and less as it's such a pain to pull the TNC out of KISS mode.
I'm finding NosAPRS to be a very promising solution.
http://www.qsl.net/ve4klm/packet/aprss.html
Not only will it do some basic APRS functions such as messaging, but it
also has full TCP/IP functionality for regions with TCP/AX25 infrastructure
like the Puget Sound.
Also promising to work with is the Internet Digipeaters (AXIP) that're
built in to NosAPRS. If that isn't enough, NosAprs is open source (not GPL
- there's a difference.) so we can extend it as desired.
I'll have a compile of NosAPRS that runs on the HP100/HP200 available
shortly.

WB4APR advises it will run on a cga grade screen and fit on a 720k floppy.
Obviously not a lot of maps and such, but that means it should work on the
HP machines. I am going to try and get it going on a ZEOS that I have,
similar to the HP's. But it may not be for another week or so that my
schedule will have the open time to play with this. My intent is to use
aprs-dos in the vehicle with a pico packet. The Pic-E will always encode my
position. Will share the one radio with the Pic-E and Pico-packet, and be
able to monitor the traffic, send messages, etc. with the Zeos.

I like the MFJ speaker box. Not too big, works good, priced right. (MFJ-281)

I have ran Aprs dos on my HP100. It has worked fine. I just wonder if
there is a way to default to a already zoomed in map since it takes so long
to draw maps.
