Broadband through the sewer.

This is either a joke or a great idea!

This was too good not to comment on...the booth across from ours at
TELECOM is by KA-TE systems. They make a system which, according to the
sign, brings Broadband to the Building and features No Digging.

How? Over power lines? Over cable tv? NO

Through the Sewer pipe! (I'm not joking).

It is a fiber optic cable that snakes through the serwer into your
building and brings the broadband signal. The pipes, trunks, everything
is in place.

They have several transparent plastic tubes set up to show you how
it works...

I'd be curious to see where it comes out of the sewer line at. Kitchen sink
or toilet bowl???

It's real. They deliver a fiber bundle... or at least a pair... to a
building.

I have a pair of older Talkabout 6300's which I really like (Other than the
PTT being on the front of the unit).

However, Be Carefull !

Most of the newer low-end Motorola FRS radios aren't even designed and built
by Motorola any more, but off-shore contractors. It's the only way they could
stay price compettive with their rivals (who are doing the exactly same
thing).

The only thing Motorola about them is the bat-wings label on the front.

While doing a Google search on an unrelated subject, I ran across this
useful page for calculating a station's PHG value.

http://www.nashvilleaprs.net/apps/phgcalc.php

Does anyone know of a web page that would similarly calculate or encode
a mic-e string?
Those of us updating our KPC-3+ station and/or digi settings could
replace our position strings with the shortened mic-e format.

Bob,

OK.. aprstxt appears to work on my small dos Zeos palm pc (not a modern
"Palm PDA") :-)

aprsmin, ditto, if I make the directories it expects.

How would I get just a map of TX or a few TX maps ? It appears I have to
have a file in maplist ? Also which ZIP on the TAPR site would hve Tx?

So far SEMAPS25, SOMAPS01, MMMAPS25, WMAPS30 don't appear to have them.. ??

Thanks. Still reading on all this.

I've had my home sewer line cleaned several times over 30 years.

I wonder how friendly that rotating blade is to the fiber bundle...

Makes more sense then Internet over powerlines...

I suspect the cable might be more susceptible to BIFF's[1], not to mention
the Roto-Rooter man.

Way back in college I spent a summer doing sanitary sewer inspection.

We would "block" (restrict the size of the the sewer pipe at several
locations) using expensive commercial inflatable plugs, or the "cheapo"
method, a PVC pipe and a "hippty-hop" (those inflatable balls with the
handle that kids sit on and bounce around, we used the handle to tie a rope
which we would secure to man hole ladder so it wouldn't get sucked down
the pipe).

Then the fun part, we go to the center of the area we blocked, pop the
manhole cover, put a gasoline powered fan over the top of the man hole, and
then lower a couple smoke bombs down inside.

You could then find where there were leaks by looking for white smoke.

Unfortunately, if you had a dry trap in you house you got a surprise (We
did canvas the neighborhood with flyers to notify people, but we still got
to see fireengines show up about the 2-3 times a week).

My favorite quote was "95% of the sewage is just water and soap, it's the
other 5% you have to worry about".

Here's one that includes the new extended PHG construct:

And for those willing to think to the future...here's one that includes a
newly emerging PHGra construct (altitude embedded at the end, so you don't
have to waste TX time with A=#####):

APRSdos will tell you the compressed format for any position of the
cursor. I think it is Maps=Plots=Format or something like that. It
displays the 11 byte "compressed" format.

The compresed format would be better than the Mic-E because APRSdos
interprets all Mic-e's aas "mobiles". So when you hit display-mobiles,
you would see just mobiles (and any Mic-E formatted other stations). But
its nice to see the digis at the same time, so that wouldnot be that
bad...
