The trials and tribulations of a digi setup. After driving 100 kms, round
trip up to the mountain top at 6,200 feet in a nasty mountain storm and
setting up the ve7rnt digi and returning home. The results were
discouraging!!! I could hear a few stations on my home station setup but
could not reach the digi!! it is 2 kms away and 4,200 feet up from my home
but a long way around to get there! Was indeed frustrating so, loaded up
and headed back up again on the ole rough trail. After checking the
equipment and connections could not find any problems!!!! So all the way
back home and tried and tried again.....then noticed that although my radio
at home was transmitting and it sounded like APRS on my other handheld..my
d7 could not decode it!!!! So switched kpc3's and poof fully operational!
Lesson #1 in murphy's law of digi comms..sometimes the simplest solution is
the THE solution.....was worth a good laugh and fair bit of gas and lots of
mud....lol!!!!

Have you seen/used the mini-ITX motherboards from VIA ? They are only
6.5" square.

http://www.viavpsd.com/index.jsp

You can pick these up for arouund $99US with a 533MHz C3 proc that draws
3-5W avg (8W peak). Performance wise they dont come close to a P2-400 but
power consumption wise they are very good. The have onboard
VGA/HDD/Floppy/USB/LAN/TV & Soundcard.

With small form factor case, 128Mb RAM, 128Mb CF Card & Motherboard/Proc
combo your looking at around $250US. You can get 12V PSU's that will run
these boards, a HDD and CDROM/Burner (60W total) that are suitable for
Solar operation.

http://www.mini-box.com/pw-60.htm

I've got a cut down version of Slackware 9.0 (40Mb inc networking/ax25
tools) on a 64Mb CF card running my AX25 sat gateway (digi-ned+aprsd) on a
EPIA V5000 motherboard (C3-533MHz fanless). It all sits in a 19" rack
mount case with two Motorola Syntrx 2m Radios run from the left and right
channels of the onboard soundcard. It connects to the rest of my internal
network via the onboard LAN.

What's more there are no special patches or wizzardry to perform compiling
a kernel, its as simple as loading a distro with 2.4.18 or later kernel and
you are away. Its very simple !

Mounting the CF cards as Read Only is very good advice. You will be
surprised what breaks when you try this the first few times, basically if
you can build a dist to run off a CDRW disk first you will have no problems
with your CF card. I NFS mount the /var/log directory via the local LAN,
the beauty of using linux is this can be done with the ax25 networking over
RF if the box is at a remote site. The alternative is keep them in RAM
and scp them in a cron job to another machine, over RF of course.

This little system has been running now for 3 months on my very simple
Solar setup. Total consumption of box including radios is 15W static, and
100W with both Radios transmitting. Average power is less than 20W since
my digi really only listens on both ports. I've got a T7F 70cm 19k2 data
radio & baycom USB TNC coming from Germany, hope fully this will give me
connectivity to a fellow HAM's QTH that has unlimited ADSL, it will also
then become an IGATE.

I've even started toying with the idea of putting one of these systems in
the local ATV repeater, feeding the onboard TV out in as a Test Pattern
Source and displaying APRS traffic. Its got to be better than watching a
Philips 4:4:3 test pattern all day. So many projects and so little time.

Hey group,

Interested in putting APRS weather in your web page? I've put together a
little program that generates an image that can be incorporated in a web
page that shows the current weather information.

For details visit:

Or for an example visit:

Great idea! I will add the table to the APRS Errata web page...

Yes great idea! but here is the rub. It is the combined function of the
DIGI and your rig. So somehow we have to figure out how to subtract the
DIGI's delay out of the equation. I have no really good ideas.

Other than we have to List BOTH the RIG and the DIGI RIG for each minimum
TXD setting until we have enough data to be able to figure out how much
of the TXD is assignable to the digi...

Agree. We did that many years ago. See:

  http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/APRS-docs/

And I will be honing all this new WIDEn-N paradigm stuff down to add it to
the FIXING 144.39 web page:

  http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/aprs/fix14439.html

I hope to concentrate more on fixing what we have. But it takes everyone
looking at their networks, and their local goals, and figuring out where
they want to concentrate their area of reliability...

This discussion has really been valuable in looking at all the nuances of
the APRS network on 144.39

WARNING!

TXD is a very important feature.

Although Wes has a good idea, it can be VERY misleading! He is only
testing with his LOCAL digi and not taking into account other digi's may
have receivers with different processing rates. If you are successful at
80ms reliably on one digi means nothing for the other digi's you may hit or
pass by.....so be WARNED it is NOT just about your transmitter!

Like I said, Wes has a good idea (it's been around since packet began) but
good to bring it up again. Most everyone can reduce their TXD. If they
are at 300ms, and reduce it to 200ms for the next month as see the
difference that is still a significant reduction of RF time. Pushing the
limits to 80ms might find one having a lot of trouble! Just be aware of
that.
