Subject: HELP:! Digi Travller Serial Connection ? Strange

Go figure I wait till' I am 1.5hrs ready to leave on a trip and I start
wiring the GPS. I got mine 2 days ago and just connected Brown to Pin 2
Red to Pin 3 and Black to pin 5 on my DB-9 connector. Something was
really strange while using Windows XP Pro, the mouse goes all over the
place and does not respond properly when I move it..ONLY when the GPS is
plugged into the laptop.
I checked the com port to 8N1 on 4800 and it works fine without the GPS
connected. When connected the GPS does turn on. I booted into Red Hat 9
and the Mouse works fine but then again the computer is only 4 days old
and I have not tried to configure the com ports yet so they may not even
be enabled.
Any ideas ?? I would like to try it out on my trip to Orlando tonight, I
may have internet access while up there for the week depending on if I
can "borrow" a wireless connection. I have tossed a few WiFi antennas
and repeaters in the truck just in case.

There was a posting a while back about WinXP thinking that anything
putting out NMEA was a mouse. Someone on here probably remembers
the fix.

This has been discussed endlessly on this and other APRS-related SIGs.
It's Windows brain-dead Plug-N-Play stupidly identifiying the continous
data stream coming out of the GPS at boot as a mouse. There are some
registry hacks to stop this --OR-- you can just keep the GPS unplugged from
the serial port until AFTER Windows has finished booting.
(Windows does a scan for new devices every time you boot as part of the
startup process, and attempts to install them automatically. If you plug
the device in after Windows has finished booting you don't get hit with
this pain-in-the-neck "user friendlyness". )

Rich, when this happens, do you boot the laptop up while the GPS is plugged
in and turned on? Or does the mouse start going bonkers if you plug in the
GPS after the computer has booted?
I think I have read about some problems where if some serial data is coming
in at the right (?) speed on bootup, Windows 200 (and I guess XP) sees it as
a serial mouse.

It was both..BUT
Abort the message I got it working now. I read one of the messages that
said use 2 3 and 5 but it did not mention 4 to 6 and 7 to 8 jumpers. I
found that on the web page and now it's working.
Sorry to go off half cocked.. Just wanted to get the message out ASAP
before I left and hope for a reply. On that note, I got 5 replies in
less than 10 minutes !! Thanks everyone!

Maybe... but I did not have that problem. It was just me rushing to get
the job done at last moment. That behavior is due to the lack of jumpers
from 4 to 6 and 7 to 8 on the DB9. So on a tracker it may work without
them but on a PC you apparently must have them. Or maybe must only on
some brands of computers.

A couple days ago someone was looking for the Q constructs page that was
not available at it's normal home. Dale WA4DSY was nice enough to put it
up on his page as part of the aprsd docs.

I've seen precisely this behavior. I may have also seen it coming out of
sleep mode.

Don't do this if you are using a serial mouse!
1. Run RegEdit.
2. Select -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sermouse
3. Double click the Start value.
4. Change 3 to 4. Click Ok.
5. Close RegEdit and reboot.

You probably have 100 answers for this now....
1. Run RegEdit.
2. Select -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sermouse
3. Double click the Start value.
4. Change 3 to 4. Click Ok.
5. Close RegEdit and reboot.
