Subject: 30% network improvement

Here is another thing we can ALL do to improve our networks by 30%:
Set your Kenwood or other MIC-E STATUS-TX-RATE to 1/5 instead of 1/1.
THis sends the added 20 bytes of status only once every 5th position
packet instead of including it in every packet. Since a Mic-E/Kenwood
packet is only about 40 bytes long, having the added 20 bytes of status IN
EVERY ONE is just wasted overhead.
ALL APRS programs are supposed to CAPTURE and RETAIN the last STATUS even
if it is not refreeshed in every packet. THus, once people have received
one STATUS from you, their radios or software should always display it.
Please CONFIRM that your favorite CLIENT software does this. It was
fundamental in the design of the MIC-E format that all client software
would do this. If your's doesnt, then we need to get that author to fix
it...

The nay-sayer might say, "aw, but this only affects a few mobiles"...
Well, it is the few-mobiles transmitting new position reports every 1 to 3
minutes that represents almost half of all APRS traffic, so anything we do
to improve their efficiency really helps the network...

I have a D700 (KF4OTN-12... Off the air right now b/c of storm damage) that
I use a lot for messaging... Jim WA6OFT, and others, have had similar
problems when msging me. This is when I'm sitting at the radio! The buffer
isn't even full or close to being full and it won't send an ack. To my
knowledge, there isn't a setting for the radio NOT to ACK a message sent to
it.
I have 'Cc'ed the APRSSIG on this so that maybe someone might have an
answer...

Your right, if the message buffer fills up in the D700 it will send a
rej ack, which means it rejected the message sent to the party you sent
it too. So you need to clear the buffer out...

Ok, I have a 9600 baud TNC (a real one, not a limited (ahem)
implementation), and I have a 9600 baud ready radio.
I can open a filtered port to aprs IS and only get stations for, say 500
miles around.
How do I get all those stations onto 70cm at 9600? Is there some app which
will take rx'ed IGATE traffic and put it on the air direct (ie not as 3rd
party packets with my callsign).

Anytime that the kenwood radios are configured to use a GPS to send position
information, and there is no GPS fix, they will not transmit status, ack,
position or otherwise. This might be what you are experiencing.

Ev and the Group,
The Washington County EOC activated approx 48 hours prior to the storm
making landfall. Our Emergency Response SOGs stated that once the winds hit
50 mph fire, EMS, and law enforcement would not be responding to calls.
Because we only have access to a weather station at the extreme western side
of the county, we used APRS to monitor a weather station just east of our
county (KB4TOH-11... Thanks Mike and Dave). When it was determined that
the winds were over the limit, we stopped all emergency responses until
speeds subsided to a safe speed.
The FireNet data helped a lot as well. Besides providing more weather
stations to confirm wind speed and direction, rainfall from these stations
helped determine flooding. Curt was able to modify his program that parses
the Rivergaging stations so that we would get updates every 5 minutes. This
kept me inside the office instead of walking out to the Roanoke River to
check the manual gauge we have... (Can someone please petition to put a
shiny new river gauge back there so I don't have to go out there at all?!?)
I'm looking at putting together some small trackers that can be thrown in
emergency vehicles that are going out during the storm so we can determine
their location... exactly. At one point, we had three people trapped out in
the storm that couldn't get back due to trees blocking the way and we
couldn't determine exactly where they were to be able to get them out...
They now vow to never go out in another storm... :)
We did send some test messages to the Dare Co EOC that were acked but never
responded to... They were busy. But we did have comms with them and other
users in the area so that was really good. Hope this makes APRS shine! It
definitely worked for us!

Eric KF4OTN

This is true, but I feel sure that I have a GPS fix during these times... I
rarely loose the fix in my area. BUT, when I get that station back up and
running I'll check on that to see... (I always wanted an excuse to get an
external antenna for my GPS... :) )

Remember, ALL radios and stations under your call will RECEIVE any
messages to ANY of your stations. But only the one with a matching SSID
will ACK...

I've been scaning for "boguss paths" for a long time.

It was never a high priority to Email users. Sending messages on RF
is pretty much pointless as many of the stations showing up are trackers
without receive capability. We're having enough trouble to get folks
to reduce their paths.
The real solution is still to simplify paths (pseudo aliases) and real
digipeaters instead of the inadequate TNC based solutions... IMHO...
