DIGI_NED will not take WIDE5-7 (by default that is) since there is no
digipeating rule in the rulefile for that. Is this another Kantronics
"feature"?
When WIDE5-7 is used it will give some interesting side effects, making
some usefull functions completely useless:
1) When WIDE5-7 is used as only component in the path, without RELAY and
WIDE, discovery of a "direct" packet will fail. If you manage to forward
the packet via two digipeaters the WIDE5-7 will have become WIDE5-5. The
next digi will take this as a "direct" packet. UIview (with suitable
plug-in) and DIGI_NED will most likely post a DX message since this a
"direct" packet seems to have traveled over a great distance. So DX
messages become totally meaningless if packets appear to be direct when in
fact they are not. Also the "mheard" list of directly recieved stations
will contain bogus entries. In DIGI_NED it will also bypass duplicate
checking since all direct packets are not subjected to duplicate checking
and are digipeated always.
2) If you used "RELAY", "WIDE", or "RELAY,WIDE" before this strange
"WIDE5-7" then you will not have these side effects mentioned in 1) since
the digi already sees that the "RELAY" or "WIDE" hop has been used by
another digipeater. You may encounter a messaging problem when talking to a
station that uses UIview or Xastir (and maybe some more programs?). These
programs try figure out the reverse path back to you, which will fail if
you started with WIDE5-7.
In short, this is definately not a good idea and it is a pitty that some
digis seem to pass WIDE5-7 type paths.
Kind regards,
Henk.

Imagine a UI-View plugin that analyses APRS paths-used and offers
suggestions to users as to what to change them to for greatest efficiency.
How could it be used? Here are some examples (with my appologies to Bob
and Earl for using their callsigns as examples):
It hears:
WB4APR>APRS,RELAY,WIDE6-6:....
It sends WB4APR an APRS screen message (once each day of occurance, maybe?)
to say,"Bal/Wash APRSteward says: Please use TRACE2-2 instead of
RELAY,WIDE6-6"
It hears:
WB4APR>APRS,RELAY,WIDE5-7:....
It sends WB4APR and APRS screen message to say, "Bal/Wash APRStweard says:
Please use RELAY,WIDE2-2 instead of RELAY,WIDE5-7"
It hears:
KD5XB-10>APRS,RELAY,WIDE5-5:....
It does nothing, because that's fine in New Mexico, and the Eastern NM
APRStweard is setup to allow that. However...once every two hours (again,
a user-programable option) it sends a BLN that outlines the proper UNPROTO
paths for it's domain + 2-hops.
It hears:
KD5XB-10 TX at a rate of <5 minutes from the same location
It sends KD5XB-10 an APRS screen message to say, "E-NM APRSteward says:
Please reduce your TX rate to 60 minutes when at a fixed location."
THIS PRODUCT COULD SINGLE HANDEDLY FIX MANY PROBLEMS IN THE RF APRS NETWORK
while still allowing for other operation on a temporary basis as the need
of an emergency or tactical network would dictate. Alas, this product
doesn't exist. :)
Regards,
Ev, W2EV

I wasn't doing any emcomm, just spending the night and adjusting lines. Good
thing I was there, since our tide was around 7 feet above normal.
See http://dellabarba.com/sailing/hurricane.html for some pictures.

Ev,
I did at the Washington County EOC... More to the SIG in a bit about how
APRS helped make decisions about the safety of Emergency Services workers
during the storm.

On Sun, 5 Oct 2003, Ev Tupis (W2EV) asked about the new WIDEn-N paradigm:
>Could you diagram it for me?
Yes, I have added a great sketch of a LANn-N surrounded by WIDEn-N and
with some LINKn-N's to other areas about 1/3rd of the way down the page:
http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/aprs/fix14439.html
I hope to add another sketch of a WIDEn-N example later today..

Will xmap work in a current version of aprs or any other version? Wanted to
use it on my desktop with APRS.
