Thanks to all, that was all that was wrong.. The software was defaulting to
the Delorme EarthMate. I selected the RS/TripMate and the Palm and
StreetAtlas works fine..

I used the Serial Hot/Sync cable that is without the cradle, into a
telephone cable with one end replaced with a male db-9.

Now, how can I get PocketAPRS to use these great maps?

I too will get this to work using the TinyTraks eventually...

Well, dang... something killed Apache. Wonder how long that's been broke.
Must've been something I did while reloading the firewall.

We're still hoping to put out a 'standard' symbol library, though there
wouldn't be any particular requirement to use it. The concept is derived in
large part from MIL-STD-2525B, which covers the US military's warfighting
symbology. It doesn't include the friendly/hostile designators, but as
Bob's pointed out in the past, it might be something to consider on this
SIG. =]

Jeroen Vreeken's been doing a lot of work on this - I haven't had a chance
to give it the attention it deserves. We really do need to start putting
more smarts into the network routing.

Now, if we can just get the software authors to support the display
appropriately. For the record, I've managed to get Listen to display a
position report with a Kanji display name. Not many people use Listen as
their primary APRS interface, though. I've looked into Xastir already...
maybe Roger or the brothers Sproul could give us an idea how much trouble
it'd take to modify their Windows-based programs?

You could, but why? Dumb trackers implemented with ordinary TNCs are now
a needless addition to the congestion on 144.39 . They indiscriminately
transmit the entire NMEA string (typically 100+ characters) as-is, severely
limit limit your choice of symbol, and stupidly keep transmitting at a
constant rate even when you are not moving.

Try a TinyTrak instead. This $35 dollar kit can transmit modern compressed
format posits, do burst after unkey on a voice channel, has
variable-rate smart beaconing that transmits more frequently when you go
faster and slows way down when you park, allows you to switch-select two
different sets of settings, and consumes 9mA instead of 900mA like a TNC2
clone. (It works very nicely from a 9V battery for 20-30 hours for
temporary setups, handheld man-pack mobile, etc).

The compressed-format posits not only tie up the channel for about 1/3rd to
1/4th the time of conventional dumb-TNC trackers; they are more likely to
actually get through since the shorter bursts are less likely to get
clobbered by other activity on the channel.

At the moment, you can't! I had the same thought.

Someone really needs to reverse-engineer the Delorme XMap Handheld file
format to make an unlimited supply of street level maps available to both
PocketAPRS and APRSce.

Another intriguing possibility; Undertow's PMap 6.0 (used with UI-View
and WinAPRS) can export map screens in VECTOR format as well as simple
bitmaps. These exports are in Windows Metafile (WMF) format and can be
smoothly zoomed and panned to any size view. I have exported these maps
and subsequently modified them in vector editors like CorelDRAW, Adobe
Illustrator, AutoCAD and MapInfo.

PMap displays it's map database on a simple x-y rectangular Mercator-like
projection. Calibrating an exported map should be nearly effortless since
one wouldn't have to deal with curved lat/long lines, even for maps
covering large areas.

Subject: is wide5-7 a valid path?

Hi guys,

I'm working on some maps for aprsworld that will show the number of hops
needed to get to an igate. In testing the software I found a number of
interesting packets that are running around. Here is one:

KB0WYL-14>TV5S4S,RELAY,WIDE,WIDE5-7,GATE,qAS,KE0VN:'|Ndo*vu/]"6m}

Is WIDE5-7 valid or useful? If so, how many hops has the packet taken as part
of the WIDE5-7?

Ah yes, you have found the "hidden" item in N-N!

the first N in N-N is only used for the end user to reverse count how many
packets it took to reach you. So, you can fake people out if you run
WIDE2-7 SOME people might think that when you got to them with a path left
of WIDE2-1 that you hit them after only one hop.

Only the -N is decremented.

That's what I thought. The only problem is that I want to find out how long
of path they launched with, and I can't. Oh well. Out of a sample of 10,000
stations, only 3 are doing that.

Thanks,

-Jim

Subject: Issue with Palm...
From: "Mike Yetsko" <myetsko@insydesw.com>

I just dug out my old Palm IIIc to play with the DigiTracker and it works
great.

But I ran into an issue.

I use 'that' serial port for a number of things. Wx, my K2, etc. So I
can't leave the HotSync running all the time. When I set up my Palm IIIc
and put the map software on it, I upgraded the whole setup.

The Palm is now at 3.5.3, and I'm running 4.01 (the last freebie upgrade)
on the desktop.

HotSync lets me configure it so that it's 'on demand', and I shut it down
when I'm not using it. When I want to update maps in the Palm, I just
build the update, click on HotSync Manager, and then hit the HotSync button
on the cardle. In addition, HotSync does NOT start on cold boot.

The problem is that if I accidently leave my Palm IIIc in the cradle when I
boot my PC in the morning, it hangs. Once it hangs, I can remove my Palm
and reboot to my hearts content. It hangs. I have to boot in SAFE mode,
without the Palm, then shutdown and let it boot again. I do NO other
actions. Just boot in safe mode, shutdown, boot, and it's fine.

As long as I leave the Palm OUT of the cradle.

Oh, it does not matter if the Palm is on or off...

Anyone else run into this?

Mike
