And yet, the problem didn't occur overnight. The solution (short of
SUPLISTing) will take time, too. The key is user education. We've spend
soo many cyberbytes of space lamenting the difficulty we have in knowing
what the "best" path is in any given pocket of APRS activity.
APRSteward fills not only that need (a system that sends a BLN every
4-hours that tells people to use RELAY,WIDE,WIDE ... or whatever) but can
also monitor traffic, sending APRS screen messages to those exceeding these
"local limits".
Sure many may be computer-less trackers...but someone is tracking them.
Their owners will surely see these suggestions and eventually comply...for
the good of their local network.
XXXn-N's adoption is immaterial to the discussion of the APRSteward system.
Either way, APRSteward is a great idea. It's about using the APRS network
itself to educate APRS users. With enough education...XXXn-N is not
necessary. With little/no education, XXXn-N is useless (see: APRS v
W,W,W,W,W,W).

With aprsd it's time based, which in some cases can be a function of how
much memory is in the system (ie, my project does not have swap since
everything is running off of a ramdisk).

I'm sure there are people that can better answer this question. We've set
our history time to 30 minutes for the Nashvilleaprs.net central servers.
IIRC I think that was a default in aprsd and we figured anything older
than that maybe be a little stale.

WA4DSY's http://www.wa4dsy.net aprsd has a fair bit of documentation and
runs on linux. I've packaged up aprsd onto a bootable linux floppy so you
don't have to maintain a full linux distro to run an igate
http://www.rimboy.com/rimdistro/rimigate
As I mentioned above, your history timer will be based on the amount of
ram in your system. For those of us in Nashville using it to feed
nashvilleaprs.net servers we set the history on the igates fairly low
since our tier 2 servers have a longer history set and we'd prefer
everyone in the Nashville area to connect to those... they both sit on T-1
or better pipes vs the igates which all sit on DSL, Cable, or ISDN lines.

UIDIGI is EEPROM based, DIGI_NED runs on a computer. You need a TNC2
clone to run UIDIGI, it looks like DIGI_NED will talk to anything that can
decode a packet and spit it out into a format DIGI_NED can understand.
If you've got access to an EEPROM burner then UIDIGI is a good way to go.
If not then consider if you're willing to purchase one and the EEPROMS.

I had the marina take a look and she didn't go anywhere. FINDU has her back
where she should be now too.

Hmm, borrowed???
Hey, don't laugh! When I lived on Long Island a number of years ago, they
busted this guy around Commack for stealing a car. He got a key for it
somehow, and for something like 2 years, he'd hang around the LIRR station
and wait for the commuter to come in and leave his car. He'd take the car,
use it for the day, and make sure it was returned before the guy got back.
It came crashing down when the guy came home early one day. Turned out the
thief was even doing repairs and maintenance on the vehicle to keep it in
good shape...

Outstanding work, Eric! I think that a vast majority of list subscribers
wonder just what utility APRS actually delivers in such situations. It was
nice to hear your experience. Thanks for taking the time to share it.
Kind regards,
Ev, W2EV
