That's where we are at.. needing to decrease the number of sites, at lower
heights. However, those locations are difficult to come by, at prices we
care to afford. (Of course, I am not the only one involved in getting these
sites up! Truly was/is a team effort)

I rarely see anyone running relay here.. suppose in my own tracker when I
drag it in to re-program it, I should leave wide3-3 and make #2 relay,
wide4-4 or something like that.

These 3 digis were set up initially to support the MS-150 Houston to Austin
bike ride (9-10,000 riders over two days). We equip some of the support
vehicles with trackers. Ambulances, "sag" (tired rider pick-up), water,
etc. At HQ several laptops and LCD projectors run software displaying the
course at various magnifications, so the managers could juist look and not
have to mess with zooming around, etc. Works well. We can do this with RF
only, although a lot of folks also follow the race via findu and similar;
there is a tracker in the lead vehicle and the sag, which is at the end, so
someone following the race can see where teh "pack" is, approximately.

Uh -- why are there nodes on 144.39 when APRS is for UNconnected
packets?

Speaking as one who has been intimately involved with disasters around the
country over the years......there will be NO communications, of any type,
immediately after a large scale storm as all of the "permanent" sites will
be off the air either due to (mainly) power outages or loss of the physical
site. This is where amateur radio stands out. The fact that we don't have
to wait on any outside agency to begin getting on the air. We have trained
folks with lots of equipment who are willing to step up and provide for
their community.

What is important, is that each area of the country identify, develop and
test their system. Before the bad news strikes. Numerous times. Until it is
second nature. What are you going to do if Joe Bob, who has all of the
equipment and knowledge and who is a main "leg" of your communications
system can not contribute because he or his family has been personally
affected?? Who is going to fill the need then? There must be backups' to
the backups' to the backups'. Or Plan A, B, C, D, E.......etc. And you had
better believe that I want a plan in place that has Dallas (or another
neighboring community) ready to step in and handle our communications if we
can't!!! And there WILL be times that this happens! Don't fool your selfs!
The ARRL offered up exactly this idea several years ago (strike teams?) but
they seemed to have died based on "nobody is going to play with my toys but
me". Too bad.

The other side of the coin is WHAT type of communications are going to be
required by the agencies you serve? Amateur radio is blessed with numerous
modes that allow a wide spectrum of options IF THEY ARE USED PROPERLY!
Based on the needs of the served agencies, practice, practice, practice
your disaster comm plans. This means if you choose APRS (or plain vanilla
packet) for a specific need, then identify before hand who is INSIDE the
disaster area for LOCAL needs (identified BEFORE the disaster) that can
swiftly get a digi/repeater on the air and several digi's OUTSIDE your area
that probably weren't effected to handle outbound traffic.

There are many other questions that MUST be answered BEFORE an incident
occurs to properly, professionally and promptly serve your area. How is
everyone going to know WHAT voice repeater is the primary contact point
immediately following a disaster. If all of your repeaters are down (and
this CAN happen!) how do you know that the person(s) with the backup system
are able to get it on the air in a reasonable amount of time? Do they need
help? Have they personally been effected? Is there a system in place to
verify the above? What are you going to do with all of the hams that have
never shown an inkling of interest before a disaster and who have no clue
how disaster nets are operated and who suddenly swamp the available
repeaters?

It seems to me that all of this bickering is only good for exercising the
fingers on the keyboard. There are numerous ways to do things that works to
provide effective communications. But it all boils down to pre-incident
planning and practice. What works in my neck of the woods may not in your
neck of the woods. Share ideas about successful operations and quit
slamming each other.

Care to flame me? My delete button is handy! I only offer this up in an
effort to shed some light on an age old problem. Good luck!

Yep, Scott, most Canucks (Canadians) speak at least one or both of our
"official languages", plus, in my small office alone (at Bell) when
pressed, we can come up with at least 103 additional languages.

But even in English, we do have differences; for an example, if I told you
that my eves-through is clogged, and needs (and it does) clearing out;
You'd probably have no idea what I mean. (It's the thing that runs around
the roof, not "ruff" of my home, which collects rain water, and sends it on
its way to the storm sewer (as opposed to our sanitary system)- different
set of pipes.

Even in French, now here things really become interesting; there is *real*
French as they speak in France, or French as we speak at home (Jollie) in
Quebec, or French out in our Eastern Provinces (Acadian), or French as is
spoken in the U.S, that's Creole. (Your screen is probably not set up for
the accents - code page 850, so I didn't send any accents.)

No - *please* don't shout ! Just slow down, and give me time to
"transliterate" what you're say in "American" to "Canuck", and we'll
respond.

Our languages are getting every so much different with each passing day.
(Volume does not, believe me, help !, as you say, Please, just slow down !)
And oh, no offence here, I can hear you just as well when you're speaking
*to* me, as when you have you have pressed your face into mine. (Only
"used car" salesmen use this trick, and the closer that the get to your
face, the worse the "lemon" that they're trying to plam off !)

And to answer your question, yes, most "educated" Canucks, speak, read and
write our offical languages. (And in my case, being 53, I might be able to
translate into Latin - long gone into history, from Canada.) Or sorta,
because, as you've guessed by now, the English was not Mama's "tongue".

And I agree, sorta, that we may be "wacky"; but our Country is an
"experiment" under H.R.H. Elizabeth; The experiment here is to find if we
can find (of our many Cultures and Races), some things that we can all
share with each other and enjoy.

And while the road to understanding is rough, it's kinda neat. Where else
than in (say) Toronto, can you have real Chinese food - walk three hundred
metres, and now you're in Central Europe, an other three hundred meters,
you're in Greece !

Each culture brings us the very best of their old "home-land" to share with
all of us. (Music, food, and all).

We're having fun, as we each "discover" each other .... and as to the food,
we'll if were not for my doctor's order's, I'd probably come in over 300
pounds ! :} I'm now down to 175 and my doctor would like me to be 165 -
same as I was as a "teen-ager". (Yeah, right !)

So there it is, Canada, is a *very* different Country, amd we're trying
something new every day. So, why not give Canada a try, and keep an open
mind, and have fun ! (That's the whole point, of Canada - have fun !)
