I'd been playing with a CAT cable for my FT-817 and ended up on the 31m SW
Broadcast band where CRI (China Radio International) was a respectable
signal considering the damp string I was using for an antenna. Talking to a
friend who lives a few hundred miles South, we did some comparison
reception tests. Anyway, the other day he asked how well I could receive
Radio Australia on 9.5MHz. A quick tune (this time on the TS-570) and
zappo! this huge signal jumped out of speaker. Colosal signal indeed.
"Hmmm... I thought. Is that a direct signal or is being rebroadcast nearer
to Europe on behalf of ABC. I'll ask ABC's website..."
And that's the question? Just where is Radio Australia broadcast from? A
search of the net (and normally I have no problem finding what I want) was
not to helpful. Sites at Lyndhurst and Carnarvon were mentioned but I think
those may be closed now. A Belgian site listed ABC as using a 300kW TX from
Thomson on SW broadcasts but again no information on the TX site, the
antennas etc.
ABC's website lists the frequency (9.5MHz) as suitable for reception in
Europe, they're not kidding! It's 1920 GMT as I type, the sun has set but
it's still very light here. At 1900 GMT there was no signal but it's been
fading up nicely during the last 20 mins. By 2000GMT it'll be S9+++ and
will drown out all the co-channel and adjacent channel guff.
So where is Radio Australia broadcast from on 9.5MHz? Are there any
websites detailing the TX and antennas? Any other useful or related info
would be well appreciated.
For people who are interested in TX sites in the UK, Mike Brown's excellent
http://tx.mb21.co.uk has pictures and history of the UK (BBC) SW sites and
also local UHF/VHF TV and radio sites.
