Fuinny about that,Bob.
Here in the UK, we found that calling ourselves 'indigenous' worked though
a lot of natives didn't understand it. As I have said before, the
troublesome minority (?) is the Muslim Asians who insist on being called
'British' - it's the law!
The others e.g. Hindus,Sikhs,Chinese and Eastern Europeans; Poles,
Czechs,Lithuanians are all quite happy to be called what they are. The
Poles for example, are very proud to be called Polish and I don't blame
them.
Later, we discoverd, especially in this area where the English are a
minority, that 'English' is a term of opprobrioum to the Muslims, as is
their word 'Kuffr'= unbeliever or infidel so they don't want to be called
English, so that is the word we use for ourselves as they would never use
it. I don't know about the Scots,Welsh, Irish. I have never discussed it
but it is probably the same with them.
So that is what we call the white ones in this part of England and it
works well just English. It has been a few years now and we do it without
thinking.
I suppose it depends on how long you have been there as to whether you are
indigenous. I saw something on TV the other day about the so-called
Aborigines not being truly native to Australia but themselves, moved there
a couple of thousand years back. O.K. so white Aussies only got there 200
years ago. I suppose that's long enough.......
Talking of TV programmes, the other week there was a programme about some
Poms who had lived and worked in Oz for a few years and were very proud to
be getting sworn in on Australia Day as they had finally qualified. The
recited an oath of allegiance and had a big party.
When our government suggested having an oath of allegiance a few years
ago, the dusky immigrants kicked up a big fuss so the government quietly
dropped it, as they did the suggestion that they learn English. If I am
ever lucky enough to be able to afford to visit Australia, I'll just keep
my ead down if confronted by an Abo r whatever you are supposed to call
him:-)

We call them Australians of course, but we call the aboriginal ones that
too. Simple. The word "indigenous" merely indicates they are part of the
original inhabitants. Incidentally I have seen some of them spruiking on
TV that are so white you only know they are part coloured because they
tell you they are.
Cheers,

>The term they use for aboriginals now is indigenous."
Sometimes, mostly I hear "aboriginals" being specific while "indiginous"
is generic. Now here's the question of all time, what do you call the
white ones besides rude names? "
