All noted Ian.
We are a multiracial country these days but the vast majority of our
citizens accept that. There is the odd case of racial vilification but
rare I believe. Some racial problems arise between migrant populations
that don't like each other much but that seems to be confined mainly to
the two largest cities according to reports I hear.
I would say that a large number of Indians living in Australia are on
student visas and are studying in one or other of the Universities. That
arrangment used to be under what was called The Colombo Plan where we
assisted those countries by opening up the universities to higher
education for our Asian neighbours. They go about their studies not causing
any problems. There was a bubble a year or so ago when some white yobbos
were targeting the Indian students with violence. They were young
Australians and we are not proud of them.
There is a large Muslim population here also but they don't seem to cause
any problem, not where I am anyway. They have schools where their students
study but they mind their own business and go about their work. There is a
big debate at present about whether the women should wear the burka with a
full face covering and this is being dealt with at present. The problem
these days is that it is at time necessary to identify someone and that
can not be done with a full face covering. The person might be male for
that matter. Only the eyes are visible and after the bombing incidents in
which Australians were killed in Bali security here has to be tight.
I understand the word indigenous to mean the original occupants of the
land, and that is what the aboriginals are. The fact that they originally
came here from somewhere else (if they did so) does not make any
difference.
The oath of allegiance? That has to be taken before citizenship can be
confirmed though I believe an affirmation is available for non-Christians.
Nobody seems to get too excited about having to take that.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.
