In 1990, when I began, I visited someone's house who regularly played a
flight simulation game over the air with another ham about 6 miles away.

At that time I assumed it was some variation on packet but, as I was only
rich enough to afford a s/h handheld into a home brew ae, I didn't ask
questions of someone who was very well off and not all that friendly.

I believe they have both left the area. I have heard nothing of them in
years. I do know they are not now on packet and only watched messages when
they were.

Does anyone know what they were up to ?

I got a bit better off, bought a 256 and a HLDLC. Even did a bit of HF for
a while but returned to VHF/UHF chat + 1200 baud packet.

I have never seen anyone playing games since. I was reminded of it by John
G8MNYs description of the ATV repeater down there,

If we could play real time games via radio, it might attract people,
though I suppose most would rather just get broadband nowadays.
