AUSTRALIA Confusion over schedule of RA's Burmese broadcasts.
Mizzima, a website specialising in Burmese news, gives a different
schedule for Radio Australia's Burmese broadcasts to the one we published
yesterday. According to Mizzima, the schedule is as follows:
2230 UT on 11840 and 5995 kHz
0030 UT on 17665 and 9730 kHz
1530 UT on 11980 kHz
If anyone can confirm the definitive schedule, that would be appreciated.
The discrepancies may be due to the time conversion, as Burma is on UTC
+6.5hrs as far as I am aware.

Only monitored 0100-0130 Burmese service on 17665 kHz daily. Evening 11980
continues with English only service at 1600-1700 hrs.
#2 john
2230 UTC on 11840 (correct) 5995 kHz (planned)
0030 UTC on 17665 (correct) 9730 kHz (planned)
1530 UTC on 11980 kHz (currently English, Burmese to come)
#3 john - correcting times to previous (my apologies)
2300 UTC (0530 Burmese) on 11840 (correct) 5995 kHz (planned)
0100 UTC (0730 Burmese) on 17665 (correct) 9730 kHz (planned)
1600 UTC (2230 Burmese) on 11980 kHz (English now, Burmese to come)
Hope this clears the confusion.

NIGERIA 594 FRCN Kaduna commissions transmitter. Latest news Written by
Ibraheem Musa, Kaduna Friday, 13 Nov 2009.
About nine months after it was handed over by the Japanese government, the
Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Kaduna's 200 kW medium wave
transmitter was commissioned at the Jaji transmission station yesterday.
This is not the first time Japan is granting such aid to the FRCN,
Barrister Yusuf Nuhu, the Director General said. "I can be recalled
vividly between 1989 and 1990, it extended to FRCN a 2.5 billion yen,
which is equivalent to N1.5 billion grant in aid of our alternative power
generating project", he said. The Director General also disclosed that
work was presently going on in the second phase of the same project at the
Enugu national station.
This donation, he further said, symbolized the mutual wish of both Nigeria
and Japan to work together. Alhaji Halilu Getso, a former Zonal Director
of FRCN Kaduna, praised the Japanese government for assisting the radio
station. He however lamented that the commissioning was a day of sober
reflection and not celebration. According to him, the station's Jaji
transmitting station used to have 10 of such 200 mw transmitter that was
being commissioned.
The former Zonal Director said the neglect of those in authority
contributed to the collapse of the transmitters and the radio station was
celebrating the receipt of one. Emir of Zazzau Alhaji Shehu Idris
acknowledged the station's programmes, adding that radio was central to
the Distance Learning Programme which the government had introduced.

PAKISTAN Radio Pakistan has changed frequency at 1600-1610 UT (not 1615
UT as listed) for English News to the Gulf & ME to new 7535 (x7510) kHz
due to co-channel interference on the latter. The \\ channel listed for
East/South Africa 15100 kHz is not audible to me, but that may be due to
lack of propagation. This news bulletin replaces what was heard during A-
09 at 1500-1510 UT. The Urdu Service at 1330-1530 UT to the Gulf & ME
continues to use 7510 kHz.
And English news is once again heard at 1100-1105 UT on 17700 kHz towards
west Europe, and this replaces the summer timing of 1000-1005 UT.

9390 on Nov 17 at 1423 UT, heard Radio Pakistan mentioned twice; unusual
to hear anything in splash from Brother Scare on WWRB 9385 kHz. I remember
9390 kHz is a PBC frequency but not now! Per Aoki, it's only at 12-13 UT
in Chinese (so jammed??), while the Urdu at 14-15 UT is VOA's R. Aap ki
Dunyaa, 250 kW, 283 degrees from Biblis, Germany, as per EiBi?

(Iwao Nagatani-JPN, JPNpremium)
So although 9390 is the second listed frequency for Radio Pakistan in
Chinese at 1200-1300 UT it will not be on air, as the above report appears
to be correct. I can hear something on 11510 kHz but it's too weak to ID.
The Chinese don't appear to deliberately interfere with this transmission
- at least, I haven't heard any interference, and the SINPO report above
seems to indicate that is so. I assume the mention of Radio Pakistan in
the later VOA programming might have something to do with it being re-
broadcast via Pakistan's facilities? Urdu 1330-1530 UT from Radio Pakistan
is currently on 7510 kHz only, via Islamabad (Rewat) 250 kW.

Radio Pakistan Irani Service 1700 UT on 6280 kHz.
I monitored Radio Pakistan Irani (Persian) service on Nov 9, 2009 at 1700
UT on 6280 kHz. The transmitter was API-3 100 kW, the worthless one. Its
awful howl makes the transmission inaudible. I monitored the signal for
some time but the noise was unbearable.
I wonder where has the new transmitter API-9 100 kW gone. During the early
part of A09 season it was used for some external language services and it
used to give good signal. Previously Noel Green had updated information
about Radio Pakistan SW transmitters but now for some reasons Radio
Pakistan frequency management cell has preferred to remain incommunicado.
Perhaps some day Noel will succeed in tracing whereabouts of API-9.
There is no news of the other two new 100 kW shortwave transmitters being
installed at Landhi Karachi being put in operation in coming days. Given
the mysterious disappearance of API-9 we do not know what will Radio
Pakistan do to the new ones being installed at Landhi.
The present management of Radio Pakistan is totally confused about future
usage of MW transmitters as well. Few months back some MW transmitters
were closed down including Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad citing high cost
of transmission.
On public protest Radio Pakistan Lahore was resumed on MW and its
refurbishment was cited as reason of its closure which was contradictory
to earlier announced reasons. In addition to resumption of Radio Pakistan
Lahore on medium wave it was announced that a 1000 kW medium wave facility
will be set up at Gwadar in Baluchistan for reaching listeners in Middle
East. Previously it was planned that a 1000 kW MW transmitter will be set
up a Lahore for reaching listeners in India. We do not know what happened
to that plan.
(Aslam Javaid, Lahore-PAK, dxld Nov 10)
Hello Aslam, And good to hear from you once again. It so happens that I
yesterday (Monday) received the Radio Pakistan printed schedule for SW
services from Islamabad. You are correct that 6280 kHz is listed via
API-3. Since reporting to them that AIR had begun to use this frequency
from 1730 UT I haven't been able to hear Pakistan at all - and not on
\\ 7485 either. I did initially have a fair strength signal on both
frequencies, but I agree that the audio was poor.
The schedule only lists API-3, 4, 5 and 6, and I think it's API-5 that is
currently not operating. I have no idea what has happened to API-9, or
where they obtained it from originally, but I once read that a unused SW
transmitter was at Mirpur - possibly intended to broadcast into Kashmir?
Maybe it was that one, but all questions have gone unanswered. It did
spend an awful long time "on test" before being put into service. And API-
8 used to feature on this schedule until it was "transferred" to their
Domestic schedule, and this I don't have, so maybe it is on air - or maybe
not?
Also listed on this schedule are the fairly new and reinstated
transmissions in Balti at 0445-0530 UT and Sheena at 0530-0615 UT via
API-4 7470 and using a quadrant antenna.
I have no news concerning the on air date for the two 100 kW transmitters
at Landhi. However, I know they were delivered, and that the old SW
transmitters were removed. But what has happened since then I don't know.
>From the comments I read about the various MW transmitters it seems to me
that management is not sure what the difference is between medium wave and
VHF. Unfortunately there has been a lack of investment in Pakistan's radio
infrastructure in the past, so hopefully this will be remedied, and soon.

The Voice of America (VOA) is expanding its reach across Pakistan. A new
arrangement with Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) now allows VOA to
broadcast Pashto language programs on medium-wave (AM) radio and Urdu
broadcasts on FM stations for the first time.
"We're delighted Pakistan's Cabinet has ratified our agreement with PBC,"
said VOA Director Danforth W. Austin. "This arrangement will allow
millions of people in all parts of Pakistan to listen to the VOA's popular
news and information programs."
VOA's Deewa Radio, a Pashto language service for people in the
Afghanistan-Pakistan border region, is now available on medium wave (AM)
at 540 kHz from a transmitter in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan's North
West Frontier Province. From 1800 to 2200 daily, Deewa Radio's AM signal
will broadcast news and current affairs programming plus call-in shows on
politics, literature and poetry.
Deewa, which began in 2006, continues to broadcast nine hours of radio
programming daily on shortwave, FM (transmitters located in Afghanistan)
and Internet
<www.VOANews.com/Deewa/>
For the first time, VOA's Urdu language program Radio Aap Ki Dunyaa (Your
World)
<www.VOANews.com/Urdu> will be heard on the FM band. A 30-minute morning
program at 0900 and a 30-minute evening program at 1800 will air on 11 FM
stations across Pakistan, including Islamabad and Lahore.
VOA's audience is strong in Pakistan, with almost 12 percent of the
population listening to or watching Urdu programs. Beyond the Headlines is
a 30-minute television program that airs on Geo News, Pakistan's leading
cable and satellite TV news channel.

DX NEWS FROM KAMCHATKA. Last August I toured the Kamchatka peninsula in
the Russian Far East. I did some listening and visited the State radio and
TV station in Petropavlovsk to collect some information. (Times are UTC,
please add 1 hour for summer time).
The large Yelizovo transmitting station (LW, MW and SW) is located right
next to Yelizovo Airport, 32 km North-West of Petropavlovsk. All FM and TV
broadcasts originate from Mishennaya Hill overlooking Petropavlovsk.
R Mayak is on 576 MW; R Rossii's Far East programme is broadcast from
Yelizovo on 180 LW and 5920 SW (5920 is replaced by 6075 kHz in winter -
Ed.). I found reception somewhat disappointing and they - as well as Mayak
- may be running at reduced power. On 5920 I also noticed slight
distortion and a hum; on comparison, 5940 Arman came in much better with a
solid and well-modulated signal.
R Rossii is interrupted for regional programmes Monday-Friday only at
1910-1930, 2010-2100, 2300-2330, 0110-0130, 0510-0530 and 0810-0900. At
2040-2055 and 0710-0725 there are segments in vernaculars, alternately in
Koryak and Itelmen. The programme "Kamchatka Fishing" (Kamchatka
Rybatskaya) is no longer listed in the WRTH but is still on the air on
Fridays only at 2010-2040 on R Rossi's frequencies 180 and 5920.

Propagation has been varied on 6170 last Fri & Sat, depending on the time
and distance of each listener from transmitter. On average it was quite
better than 7290 kHz. Unfortunately the only evening bands usable in the
7 and 6 Mhz have a large skip zone around transmitters at this time of the
year and under the current propagation conditions.
Unfortunately the 75 mb is not usable. However 6170 kHz is free of much of
the interference of 7290 kHz, and the dead zone is also somehow smaller at
our time of broadcast. There may be some other minor schedule adjustments
in the coming weeks, we will keep you informed.

11715 1400-1500 KJES 50kW 70deg to zones 3,4,9

(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Nov 17)
Extremely distorted noise spurs covering roughly 9395-9405 and 9340-9350,
Nov 5 at 2239 UT, which altho not precisely matched strongly imply that
the S=9+20 signal from WTJC amid them on 9370 kHz was the source, as
previously traced several times when the modulation peaks could be
matched, and nothing else now in the area to suspect.
WTJC 9370v is still/again putting out spurs consisting mostly of noise:
Nov 7 at 0625 UT during music, broad dirty spurs centered approximately
9345 and 9395 kHz. Same situation at next check 1335 UT.
WTJC 9370v spur report Nov 10 at 0635 UT: noisy blob covering 9275-9330
kHz, but no match on the hi side.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Nov 11) 9369.93v kHz
Can anybody please confirm if shortwave transmissions have indeed ended
from WBOH at Newport? If so, do we have the precise date that this
occurred?
Also I'd welcome hearing from anybody with photos or images of the WBOH
transmission site & SW antennas &/or the SW antenna at WTJC. If you can
assist please reply to this message or via the email address at the bottom
of the following webpage:

WBOH was missing on Oct 16, and has not been heard since. I can't be
positive that Oct 15 was the final day, but close to it. I never found any
mention of this on their website, but I see that it now refers only to
WTJC on the homepage
<http://www.fbnradio.com/> (Glenn Hauser, ibid.)
WINB SW Transmitter site I'm curious to know if anyone has visited the
WINB shortwave transmitter site & seen or photographed their SW
transmitting antenna?
I've recently been looking at images from Google Earth, Street View & Bing
Birds Eye View & I'm not sure if the two small poles behind the building
(Northwest corner) are in fact two antenna support poles for their
antenna.
The Google Earth coordinates of the poles in question are:
39 54 19.66 N 76 34 56.36 W (look more like power poles???)
The FCC licence lists main azimuth as 62 & 242 degrees, which could
indicate a simple dipole antenna, but the positioning of the poles from
the aerial images would suggest an azimuth of more like 0 & 180 degrees.
The distance between the poles is around 20 meters, which is okay for the
SW frequencies that WINB operate with for a dipole.
Perhaps this is the incorrect site for their SW antenna?? Anyway I would
appreciate any info anyone can provide. Please reply onlist here or via
email address provided on the website below:

They use a rhombic antenna that is located across the road from the
transmitter building in a corn field. Their transmission line spans
overhead across the road. I have been their and took a few pictures, but
they did not turn out well.
(Bill Harms-MD-USA, ibid.; dxld Nov 11)
The new FCC B-09 schedule has three entries for 'WBWW', despite having
granted calls WTWW instead already in August to George McClintock's new
station under construxion in Lebanon TN-USA. All are 100 kW, 40 degrees:
5755 at 00-07, 9480 at 12-19 and 22-24. CIRAF targets are 4,9,18,27,28,37-
39,46,47 which means EaCanada, all of Europe, NoAfrica, MidEast. Nothing
being heard yet. The AIR Aligarh wandering spurblob often obstructs 9480
kHz after *1317 UT; watch out!
On-air testing was anticipated to start this month, but not much detail at
the website
<http://www.wtww.us> three photos were added in October for a total of
nine via
<http://wtww.us/pages/images.php>
Skimming thru the FCC B-09 schedule I don't see any surprises:
<http://www.fcc.gov/ib/sand/neg/hf_web/B09FCC01.TXT>
It still lists imaginary stations KTMI, WBOH and WMLK. Neither this nor A-
09 show 3145 kHz for WWRB despite having been using it, nor WWCR on 4755
kHz. And still no listings for the Milton FL CP.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Nov 11)
WTWW TARGET DATE? I will start testing around the 4th week of November,
depending on the utility company. (WBWW) was simply a designator to get
the coordinating process under way without actually having any call
letters assigned. The HFCC designator letters do not have to relate to the
actual call letters. The FCC likes to use some portion of the call letters
which help in the coordination process due to the large number of
licensees.
(George McClintock-TN-USA, dxld Nov 8)
WHRA Dismantled. WHRA confirmed as off the air.
I just spoke to Larry Vehorn, engineer for WHRI Cypress Creek, South
Carolina, and he confirms that WHRA in Greenbush, Maine has signed off the
air for good. All equipment has been dismantled. Former frequencies for
WHRA have been reasigned for WHRI useage.
(Gayle Van Horn, Frequency Manager, Monitoring Times, Nov 17)
I've sent off an email Gayle asking if she knows when the last SW
transmission occurred from Greenbush. If Gayle is unable to provide an
answer I was wondering if anyone else within the group membership knew
when this occurred? Regards
(Ian Baxter-AUS, SW TXsite Nov 17)
I noticed that their website did not mention WHRA in their tx schedules
any more in A09, when I collected the new season's data. Same in B09.
Their freq schedules are a mess otherwise, and they were late in updating
Hawaii to Palau, so I'd presume WHRA's final broadcast was earlier than or
in March 2009.
Btw, could one of your contacts please convince WHR to provide a useful
frequency/programme schedule on their website?? It continues to be self-
contradictory and they (WHR) have ignored feedback emails.
[later] I heard back from Gayle Van Horn minutes ago & she says that:
"Larry (WHR) indicated to me the equipment was dismantled last spring, but
no date was given ... he indicated the online schedule at WHRI was not
correct (which I suspected) ..."
So like yourself I am now "assuming" that they finished at the end of B-08
period in late March 2009. I noted a Jan 2009 logging in dxld this morning
for WHRA.
Hopefully they update their website soon.
(Eike Bierwirth-USA, SW TXsite Nov 17)
History: "As reported earlier, I could not hear WHRA on 7390 this Sunday
morning - the 29th [March 2009]. But was it using the frequency today? I
agree with Glenn that some interference is to be expected from WHRA under
'normal' propagation conditions, although what these are currently is open
to debate.
As Glenn rightly points out, the transmission via Shijak is using an omni-
directional antenna, and so will not stop at theoretical Ciraf borders,
but will propagate elsewhere if there is a 'path' open. And of course
could cause harmful interference in the designated WHRA target area(s).
More monitoring is necessary.
(Noel R. Green-UK, dxld March 2009)
I was not up late enough to check at 0630 March 29, but anyhow that
monitoring needs to be done in Europe. I did, however, note at 0459 on
7390, it was WHRI signing-on, NOT WHRA, contrary to registrations. (And
not in B-08 listings either as I first assumed they may have still been
operating on the previous season's schedule.) [...]
(Glenn Hauser, to R. Tirana, via dxld March 2009)"
And: "Note that the WHR website <www.whr.org> does not list the callsign
WHRA any more. Angel 5 is now also called "WHRI". It is still listed at
the Greenbush, Maine, location on the "Technical Information" page - but
that same page lists T8WH as being in Hawaii, which is so obviously wrong
(as long as you know your callsign prefixes). And their frequency table
STILL contradicts itself, listing the SAME frequency from different
transmitters, with different programs, at the SAME time. I notified them
about that at the beginning of A09, but they still couldn't fix it." [my
mail to dxld yg on 3 June 2009]

Trans World Radio Changes Name to TWR.
International Christian ministry Trans World Radio, a pioneer in media
missions, will change its name to TWR on November 18, 2009. At the same
time, the organization also will adopt the positioning statement "Speaking
Hope to the World" to fortify its new identity.
"While our commitment to radio broadcasting remains steadfast, the name
Trans World Radio no longer fully conveys the scope of our organization,"
says TWR President Lauren Libby. "TWR is more than radio. It is a
multifaceted media ministry. By changing the name to TWR, we will maintain
radio as a keystone communication component all the while employing a
strategic integration of new media platforms. In fact, we will even seek
to enlarge our broadcasting footprint."
Libby explained that TWR is committed to leveraging digital advances such
as the Internet, MP3 players, video and other mobile-device formats. "In
recent years, modern technology has enabled us to make significant strides
in engaging with our global audience," he said.
"We also recognize the tremendous ministry value of social media portals
like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube," Libby adds. "We're not just
endeavoring to reach people for Christ; we want to connect and dialogue
with them as they grow in faith. Furthermore, we realize social media is a
fast and efficient way to communicate with our stakeholders."
The ministry's new positioning statement, according to Libby, will clearly
reflect TWR's primary objective of Speaking Hope to the World "Speaking
not only refers to verbal communication but also signifies the ability to
relate with people in other resourceful ways," Libby explained. "With that
in mind, we will offer relevant messages of hope in Jesus to men, women
and children around the globe. Whether it's by radio or other new media
means, TWR is dedicated to helping fulfill Christ's Great Commission."
Frequently Asked Questions.
With the name of the organization changing from Trans World Radio to TWR,
does that mean people will no longer use the term Trans World Radio
anymore?
The name Trans World Radio has existed for more than 55 years. It goes
without saying that it is entirely unrealistic to expect everyone to stop
using that name overnight. That said, TWR staff, partners and affiliated
ministries are encouraged to make the gradual shift toward using TWR as
the primary moniker.
Is TWR abandoning or scaling back its commitment to radio broadcasting?
No, not at all. In some areas of the world, we are increasing traditional
radio broadcasts on shortwave, AM and FM outlets. As TWR's Bill Damick
states in his forthcoming document "The Future is Here: Radio, New Media
and Missions": "[Radio] has the unique ability to deliver its message
efficiently, inexpensively, and compellingly to the greatest percentage of
the world's people regardless of their economic status, educational
attainment, or geographic location."
What is the meaning behind TWR's new positioning statement/tagline
"Speaking Hope to the World"?
The word "speaking" is used in both the literal and figurative sense. It
can either mean "communicating audibly" or "communicating a deeper
message" (as in "the author's latest novel really spoke to me"). The word
"hope" refers to the true, lasting expectation of something (or Someone)
better. The word "world" captures the global essence of how TWR
communicates the gospel. It's international in scope. After all, Jesus
said "go into all the world and preach (speak) the gospel."
Where do I find the TWR logo with the new positioning statement?
The logo and positioning statement artwork are available now on TWR's
public Flickr portal at <www.twr.org/flickr>
