CHINA According to Chinese DXer Li Wang, Guanxi Foreign Broadcasting
Station is planning to expand their broadcast and to change the name to
"The Voice of Beibu Bay Radio"(BBR) ("beibu" means northern).
The test broadcast of BBR began on Aug 18 at 10:00 in Vietnamese, English,
Thai, Chinese (Mandarin), and Cantonese, on 5050 and 9820 kHz. He
confirmed it in Tianjin on Aug 23 at 1027 UT on 9820 kHz with the new
station name.
The official announcement is given at
<http://news.gxradio.com/news/2009/0817/rdtj/190858.htm>
(in Chinese only) with some photographs. This is the joint project of
Guanxi People's Broadcasting Station and China Radio International. The
official regular broadcast is expected to begin in October 2009. They are
also constructing 12 FM relay stations in the border area, and will send
the broadcast also on FM directly to the bordering countries.
(Takahito Akabayashi-JPN, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Aug 24)
"The Voice of Beibu Bay Radio" was confirmed also in Tokyo on 5050 and
9820 kHz. Signing on at 1000 UT with ID in English, then programs in
Chinese, 1100 UT again ID in English, then in Vietnamese. The test
transmission seems to be at 1000-1100 UT.
(Takahito Akabayashi-JPN, via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Aug 25)
Thanks to Takahito Akabayashi of Japan for the heads up about the new
name. Beibu Bay is more familiar to Americans as the Gulf of Tonkin.
Their website <http://www.gxradio.com/foreignradio/index.asp>
has audio streaming ("Live Broadcast"). The new ID is "This is Beibu Bay
Radio" and often has "Learn about the world, get to know China". Also has
"BBR" IDs. So far heard in the usual Chinese and Vietnamese, but noted a
CRI English program (Hot Pot show with host Duggy Day
<http://enpf.chinabroadcast.cn/TalkChina/photos/cri/picture71763.aspx>
Here on the West Coast, 5050 kHz is regularly heard with decent reception,
while \\ 9820 kHz usually has heavy QRM. Should be fairly easy to ID this
now on 5050 kHz, as they give frequent English IDs, not just at the top of
the hour.
[later] 5050, Beibu Bay Radio, 1312, August 25. In Vietnamese with some
announcements in Chinese; EZL pop songs; several IDs for "This is Beibu
Bay Radio_, in Chinese, Vietnamese and English; also heard "BBR_;
announcers often heard with piano background music; mostly poor due to
higher than normal QRN and light AIR QRM; // 9820, which was mostly
covered by CNR-2/CBR.
Sei-ichi Hasegawa of Japan comments: "I confirmed it at 5050 kHz at 1500
UT on Aug 25. ID as 'This is Beibu Bay Radio' and 'BBR News'. The name of
Chinese is 'Bei-bu wan zhi sheng - Voice of Gulf of North'".
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, dxld Aug 25)
5050 Beibu Bay Radio, at 1222-1443 UT on Aug 27. Mostly in Vietnamese
with some announcements in Chinese; there was no Chinese as scheduled from
1330 to 1500 UT; EZL pop songs and indigenous songs; announcers usually
with background piano music; multi-language IDs; English words heard:
"This is Beibu Bay Radio", "BBR news" (items about Indonesia, Thailand,
etc.), "weather report" (long list of Asian cities with assume the
temperatures) and slogan "Learn about the world, know China" (think I
finally have this correct now).
Outstanding propagation today! We should enjoy this while we can, as I
expect the Voice of Strait to return here again in a month or so from 7280
kHz, which will make reception much harder.
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, dxld Aug 27)
Acc. to homepage of BBR, started test broadcast in Aug 18, 2009. The plans
of official opening the end of October.
Now sked (update: Aug 26); 2300-0100 UT on SW 5050 and 9820 kHz; and 12 FM
stations, 0100-1000 only FM and 1000-1600 UT on SW and FM.

A different story here on the West Coast. Aug 27, from 1449 to 1500* UT
heard solo Firedrake on 9000 \\ 13500 \\ 14420 (thanks Glenn for finding
this recent shift from 14430) \\ 15150 kHz. Solo FD (not parallel) on
13970 kHz. All these solo FD were against SOH. FD all started again after
the 5 minute gap at the ToH, but 13970 kHz became \\ to all the others
after *1505 UT.
On 15200 found a new solo FD at 1508 UT, so must be a new SOH frequency.
>From 1449-1500* noted CNR-1 jamming together with FD, against VOA on
12040, 11990 and 11805 kHz. Did not restart at 1505 UT, as VOA had signed
off at 1502 UT.
At 1503 found CNR-1 jamming together with FD on 12025 kHz, against RFA.

As has been reported Radio Havana language / frequency usage from 0500 UT
is variable. I have noticed this week that English has continued beyond
0700 UT.
August 23: 6060 and 6140 kHz heard in \\ at 0736 UT in Spanish,
commentaries about Honduras and Venezuela.
August 24: 6060 kHz heard at 0732 UT with English service.
August 26: 6000 and 6140 kHz in Spanish at 0715 UT. 6060 kHz was in
English and was still carrying English at 0840 UT recheck.

You are certainly correct about their extended / varied schedule! On
August 26, noted RHC signed off on 6060 kHz at about 1000 UT. Had been in
English with good reception.

The Cold-War Era Radio Tower Dismantled in Germany.
I didn't find any reports of this in the English-language sources so
here's a quick translation of what Russia's First TV Channel reported
today:
The Cold-War Era Radio Tower Dismantled in Germany.
Germany destroyed one of the symbols of the Cold War. At one time this
324-meter radio tower was considered the highest construction in FRG.
With help of this construction the Western information programs were
beamed on the territory of GDR. The radio waves [emitted] from this giant
construction covered a territory within 130 kilometers.
Now the metal structure lost its purpose. It was decided to transfer the
land which it occupies for residential housing. Over three thousand
spectators observed the complex operation to collapse the antenna.

Anyone knows antenna's QTH? What station or stations used it? Judging by
the announced signal coverage it was an FM-operation. Maybe TV, as well?
Any videos on YouTube or elsewhere yet? Somehow, the First Channel didn't
put its video online this time.

It seems like for now DW chose not to report on this development in its

story. - It was carried during one of the most popular nightly TV newscast
and reported by a major news website Lenta.ru. BTW, according to Lenta.ru,
the locals called this antenna the "asparagus."

PAKISTAN The Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) has clarified a
news item published in a section of the press that Radio Pakistan Lahore
has gone silent. The transmission of age old mediumwave transmitter which
aired programmes on 630 kHz has not been shutdown but its hours have been
reduced due to lack of its reach in the city of Lahore and also due to its
old age technology and huge cost of operation. As soon as a new
transmitter is available, it will be replaced, said a statement issued by
PBC.
That said, this transmitter still airs its daily programmes Punjabi Darbar
without fail which is heard in parts of Indian Punjab. Radio Pakistan
Lahore is now transmitting its programmes on a 5 kW FM transmitter and is
heard loud and clear in the city of Lahore. The broadcast hours of Radio
Pakistan Lahore have been increased from 110 to 154 weekly and it has
started new creative programmes to cater to the changing needs of Lahore
populace.
The statement termed the reports about sacking staffers and announcer as
baseless and said on the contrary Radio Pakistan Lahore intends to hire
more staff to meet the programming needs as it will soon broadcast 22
hours a day.
PBC has also denied the report of closing down of 100 kW mediumwave
transmitter on 1332 KHz and said transmitter is down because of
malfunctioning of some of the components of this German made transmitter.
The engineers are working to fix the problem and expect resumption of
transmission fairly soon. The PBC said the problem related to this
transmitter could have been fixed earlier had the previous administrations
planned and procured the spare parts of the transmitters.

SLOVAK REP 11840hx Radio Slovakia International, scheduled 0800-0830
UT in German, is heard regularly on 11840 kHz in addition to scheduled
5920 and 6055 kHz. It appears to be the second harmonic of 5920 kHz with a
weak but stable signal on a clear channel at that particular time, noted
Aug. 21st at 0815 UT with interview, S=2.
(Robert Foerster-D, dxld Aug 23)
Very interesting, especially since I would guess you are at a rather close
skip distance to Rimavska Sobota to be getting such a weak signal on 11
MHz. Just wondering where in Germany are you, and how far from R.S.?
As I have with WWCR harmonics on 25 m, I am wondering whether it is the
receiver at fault rather than the transmitter. Is 5920 extremely strong
when you get 11840?
(Glenn to Robert, via dxld)
Indeed, it is very interesting to observe how such a relatively low signal
can be heard at such a distance. But as I regularly work QRP on the ham
bands, I am sure that propagation, amongst other factors as soil
conductivity etc., plays the most important part in such a phenomenon.
First some details about my QTH. I am located in the most western part of
Germany. My geographic coordinates are
50 50 13.91 N 06 16 01.58 E, all according to Google Earth. The
Maidenhead locator for my QTH is JO30du. Height above sea level is 165 m.
Talking about soil conductivity, it must be quite good. When in the 50s
the Deutsche Bundespost looked for a site for the new Shortwave Station
for Deutsche Welle, and, by the way, also for the Foreign office
transmitting station, they found it some 20 km from here in Juelich, still
a well-known transmitter site. They certainly have conducted soil
conductivity evaluations prior to erecting their project.
The G. C. for Rimavska Sobota are 48.23.00.04 N, 20.01.06.09 E, again
according to Google Earth, Locator KN08AH. The distance between us is 1029
km at a bearing of 100deg.
Of course, as is usually the case when one wants to make exact
measurements, this morning, Aug. 22nd, the signal on 11840 kHz is so weak
that I am unable to measure it. The 5920 kHz QSA is about 60 dB on the
Collins with deep QSB periods, and S5 on the more "generous" Kenwood R-
600. But one thing is for sure: Yesterday, 5920 kHz was about 1 S stronger
(at least) than today, and 11840 kHz gave about 30 dB on the Collins.
So what conclusion to take? First, I think I have the chance to live in an
environment that is excellent for SW (and MW) reception. Another example:
For years, I regularly hear the harmonics of a French station on 7020 kHz
in the middle of the 40 m CW HAM band. I informed the "DARC Bandwacht"
about that phenomenon, coming, of course from 1404 kHz (x5) MW.
In their reply, they stated that no one, except me, had ever complained
about that and that they were unable to hear anything. Secondly, we had
had intense Sporadic-E these past days, extending yesterday to 6 meters in
the evening. Under such conditions, I regularly hear Czech and Slovak
signals on 31 m and above with incredible field strengths, as if they were
coming via ground wave from Juelich.
So I don't think it is a receiver mixing product or similar, as I always
check on several different rigs. From Juelich, I have heard harmonics in
the 10 m Amateur band. When I phoned them, their first reaction was to
doubt my receiver, but then, after measuring, they had to admit that some
microwatts had found their way to my receiving setup of which they then
admired the sensitivity, hi.
I hope I didn't take too much of your time, but these things are always
very interesting to analyze.
Today, Aug. 23rd, I was able to make some additional measurements on the
Rimavska Sobota [11840] signal present at around 0810 UT. Signal strength
as measured on the Collins was about 30 to 40 db, the Kenwood R-600
showing S=2-3, both with good readability. On 5920 kHz, the respective
values were 80 dB and S=4-5. So, as you presumed, this confirms the
relation between signal strength on 5920 kHz and on the harmonic.
(Robert Foerster-D, dxld Aug 23)
Log Aug 26/27/28. 5920 kHz RSI Rimavska Sobota in German, 0810-0820 UT,
S=9+20dB. At same time 11840 kHz empty channel, nothing noted so far, no
carrier at all.
Checked both channels today Aug 25 at 1330-1400 UT and Aug 26/27/28 at
0800-0830 UT. Nothing traced so far on 11840 kHz on AOR AR-7030, Eton E1
and some Sony ICF 2010 sets, here at Stuttgart JN48OR some 805 kilometers
away of Rimavska Sobota site in Slovak Republic, in 277 degrees azimuth.
Usually on UK VTC harmonics like Skelton or Woofferton or Samara Russia,
the carrier is detected even the signal is on so poor level.

Zimbabwe Community Radio, which was dis-satisfied with coverage from
faraway UAE on 50 metres, and then tested 3955 kHz via South Africa at
1755-1855 UT, is now(?) testing 4865 kHz via Meyerton during the same
offset hour.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Aug 24)
4865 Aug 24 around 1752 UT noted on 4865 instrumental music loop (VT
marker?) and ZCR started around 1755 UT. There was some carrier cuts and
audio level varied from zero to fair/good. Compared to 4880 SW Radio
Africa at the same time, ZCR signal was somewhat weaker and audio
quality/level was at times much poorer.
(Jari Savolainen-FIN, DXplorer Aug 24)
South Africa.
Tschuess, Martin <http://home.wolfsburg.de/elbe/>
(Martin Elbe-D DD9MW, A-DX Aug 27)
VTC Cello Musik" gehoert.

TAIWAN Apparently one of RTI's transmitter sites in Pingtung County is
now being used to settle 100's of homeless victims of Typhoon Morakot. As
there were two MW transmitter sites located in this county and that the
site of Changchih is no longer listed in WRTH 2009, I'm assuming it is
this site rather than Fangliao that is being used for settlement.
Counties of Pingtung & Kaohsiung (and Taitung) in southern Taiwan were the
worst affected counties of the Typhoon two weeks ago.[later] Yes, my
assumption of the former MW RTI transmitter site of Changchih is correct
according to the French & German RTI webpages. 300 families will settle on
the 7 hectares site.

However, the German item

identical.

UKRAINE Krasne LW/MW/SW site.
I think I found another nice photo of the SW antennas in Krasne, Ukraine.
Look, please at
<http:/www.dipolnet.com/antennas_in_galicia_and_lidomeria_bib107.htm>
[taken from railway express from Lvov-Krasne to Zdolbinew-Riwne railroad
track. wb.]
There is a photo of "Antenna nearby Podhorce" or Podhoyce. The topic of
this blog was the history of Western Ukraine, at the time called Galicia
with the centre Lemberg, now Lviv (Lvov).
That's why the author used a map (see "Map of Galicia" there), issued
about a century ago, when this area belonged to Poland or Austria. All the
names on the map was written in Polish. On this old map I found "Podhoyce"
just SE from Lemberg-Lviv. The location of Podhoyce is very close to the
place, where is now Krasne. On the modern map you can find it under name
Podgirne.
If you compare this picture with some photos taken from the railway side,
you could notice that the antenna towers have reverse order, which means
that the photo was taken from opposite (to railway) side. The
configuration of antennas and their order show that that might be RUI SW
TX site near Krasne. If it's so, it would be good to have another photo
taken from different angle.

Yes, I think thats right! The technicians from HCJB in Elkhart may have
changed some things at the TXer for enough bandwidth and optimized
linearity. But the most important thing will be the HCJB DRM Content
Server and Exciter. The Content seems to be all VOA stuff, mostly the "VOA
Music Mix" and some news.
Signal is not very stable at this moment, but I've put up the stream
receiving 15475 again but anyway this time I won't change frequency until
2200 UTC. At this moment (2025 UTC) it's not visible anymore at all, some
20 minutes earlier it was at about 25 dB?! The signal will hopefully
become better later this evening as it did the last days.

<http://www.rnv.gov.ve/noticias/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=106248>
Continente Americano.

Took 16 month now since the project started, we had this
in dxld, May 2008:
The Hiring commission of Venezuela's Ministry of Communication and
Information (Minci) and the commission of Radio Nacional de Venezuela
(RNV), yesterday met representatives of companies bidding for work in the
construction of the new shortwave station for RNV, located in Calabozo,
Guarico state.
Engineer Luis Alfredo Palacios, an adviser to RNV, said the station will
propagate programming of RNV throughout the American Continent. "At this
time, the International Channel's programming is produced in the RNV's
studios and transmitted from a shortwave station in the Republic of Cuba
by an agreement signed between the two countries," said Palacios. He also
stressed that the goal of this project is to build a shortwave station in
Venezuela "so that in the near future, we believe that time will be a
maximum of 18 months, we can begin to make international broadcasts from
this centre."
Palacios also stressed that the project of this shortwave station consists
of two phases. The first is expected to be completed in the next 18 months
and to cover only the northern hemisphere, and the second would last an
additional year, with which will be achieved the broadcasting of RNV
throughout Latin America.
Finally, engineer Luis Alfredo Palacios said that Guarico state is a
strategic location for the installation of the antennas because of the
place it geographically occupies, at the heart of the country, meaning
that there will be an excellent coverage and spreading of the signal of
the RNV circuit towards any country in the Americas.
