CANADA 6160.9 (!) CKZN, St. John's NF, 2250-2300 (when blocked), 18 Aug,
English, interview in unidentified prgr; 35422; it was blocked by a stn on
an adjacent ch., RNW 6165, but that was more than enough to choke the
otherwise quiet signal that was only plagued by fast QSB. This was found
\\ to Gander 1400 kHz, rated 33442, QRM de GRD.
(Carlos Goncalves-POR, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Aug 20)

Big het between 6160.0 / 6160.9, Aug 20 at 0549 UT with CBC in English. As
Carlos GonAġalves just reported from Portugal, CKZN is off-frequency, and
here it clashes with CKZU, the two about equal level and inseparable [the
only spelling accepted by MS Word]. Normally they are never zero-beat, but
maybe 15 Hz apart producing a fast ripple SAH. Still at 0606 UT; I should
have checked during CBC News on the hour when they would have been \\ but
unsynchronized. Someone must have bumped the transmitter in St. John's.
Hope they get this fixed quickly but not counting on it.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Aug 20)

I also heard this signal, but at around 0645 UTC for a short time on that
same day. It was weak and with splash from ORF Moosbrunn 6155 kHz. But it
was definitely in English, and off frequency on the high side. And there
was a heterodyne - now what would that have been caused by? Unfortunately
all had disappeared when ORF had their transmitter break just before the
hour. There's been no trace of any signal at this same time since then.

Interestingly - maybe - I could hear aircraft calling Shanwick (Shannon)
at very good strength from locations at around 20degW and at around 50-
53degN on 6622 kHz that morning. Shanwick was weak and difficult to copy.
Possibly skip distance at 6 MHz was the reason why CKZN was briefly heard?
(Noel R. Green-UK, dxld Aug 20)

5960/6175 At 0240 UTC, Aug 19 2009, on 6390 I found an AM signal under
the digital UTE. Scanning around some more, it turned out to be the same
programming as on 5960 kHz, NHK in Japanese via Sackville. Of course,
there's a Sackville signal right in-between the two at 6175 kHz, Voice of
Vietnam in English. Subtracting 215 kHz (6175 - 5960) from 5960 is 5745
kHz.

Lo and behold, I heard the Voice of Vietnam program on 5745 kHz, under
WWRB. To reduce the chance of this being a signal generated inside my
radio (an Icom R75), I asked in #swl on irc.starchat.net and 'mas' was
friendly enough to check with his DX440. He also heard Voice of Vietnam on
5745 kHz.

COLOMBIA/CUBA 6010 Prayer Alert from Russ Stendal. Colombia Para
Cristo.
6010 Voz de tu Conciencia 0000-2400 Sp 5kW non-dir Puerto Lleras CLM HJDH

We are having a major interference problem on our main short wave radio
frequency on 6010 kHz; which transmits "The Voice Of Your Conscience". For
several weeks now Radio Havana Cuba has been jamming our radio
transmissions with communist broadcasts in English from about 12:00 PM to
6:00 AM EST (a key time slot when many people tune in and the signal goes
a long ways). There are 80,000 Galcom solar radios fix tuned to our two
short wave frequencies that have been distributed to men and women on all
sides of this conflict.

Last year we had the opposite problem when an anti Castro group started up
powerful anti communist broadcasts on our other short wave frequency, 5910
kHz. After a lot of prayer we were able to obtain international help which
solved the problem. We have already filed a complaint about this new
problem but the help and decision of the international agency is
nonbinding and each country is autonomous.

Another thing that we can do is to up the power on our transmitters so
that our signal will dominate in Colombia. We have a new transmitter which
just arrived in the container from Canada which is twice as powerful as
the one we presently use. However it will require antennas, some
additional parts, labor and modifications in order to tune it to our
frequency and an adequate transmitter shack for the installation. All told
it will take about US 32,000 to get this new system up and running
properly.

Last week we also received the sad news that HCJB will be terminating
their short wave broadcasts from Quito, Ecuador for a variety of reasons.
This means that we may soon be the only remaining Christian short wave
radio on the air in Latin America at this most critical time.

I was informed yesterday that one of our high mountain FM radio sites was
destroyed in the midst of intense fighting. Guerrillas overran the ridge
we were on and heavily mined the area. The army counterattacked and our
house was destroyed along with some of our equipment. This site is very
strategic for us because it enables us to penetrate the vast Colombia
Ecuador border region which is mostly under communist control. We have
another, safer and even higher site where we can continue to transmit from
but it will cost over US 50,000 to replace this loss. We praise the Lord
that all of our people were spared and that only material things were
destroyed.

We estimate that there is a potential listening audience of well over 100
million people in Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Panama and Venezuela
who live within optimum range of our broadcasts. Our actual listening
audience is estimated to average well over 300,000 people who are tuned in
at any given time, many of them live in vast areas where church buildings
and meetings are strictly prohibited.

The world wide recession which has really started to take hold here in
Colombia has affected us and we are in the midst of a very tight financial
situation in addition to all of the above. Pray that the Lord will
continue to provide whatever is necessary to keep this vital radio network
on the air in the midst of all the strife and turmoil of this volatile
region which is open now as never before to the Gospel.

Chief Editor of the NZ DX Times Mark Nicholls has discovered an
interesting document at the Colombian Government Radio website, dated 17
May 2009. It lists current and projected operations on AM and on Shortwave
from Colombia.

Assigned SW operations:
HJTF, Turbo, Antiquia 6085 kHz 5 kW.
Bogota stations on 9635 (HJGG), 9700 (HJGR), 11795 (HJGT), 15335 (HJGV)
and 17865 kHz (HJGY), all 20 kW.
HJOY San Juan Guaviare, 6035 kHz 5 kW.

Villavicencio with 5 kW on HJHZ 5975 and HJKW 5955 kHz.
Puerto Lleras with 5 kW on HJDH 6010 and HJDH 5910 kHz.
HJOW Tumaco, Narino on 6015 kHz with 5 kW.

Projected SW operations:
HJAO Bahia Solono, Choco 6105 kHz 5 kW.

>From my own observations, only the Puerto Lleras stations are being heard
here.
(Bryan Clark-NZL, dxld Aug 16)

Yes, I believe we have found that before, and most of the stations are
long gone, but still in the database. The Bogota ones are of course Rdif.
Nacional which has been gone for sesquidecades. I think Rodriguez also
commented that most of them would never be on the air.

CONGO? 6115 is very tough in the evenings. Belarus is dominating ( \\
6010 kHz), but their audio level is very variable. It seems to me that
bits and pieces of French talk come through now and then.
(Thorsten Hallmann-D, dxld Aug 20)

6115.000 Radio Congo. Presumed the one here for the past several days,
1820+ UT with a woman in French. Possibly news after 1830. Have only had a
chance to briefly listen, as I'm getting ready for work at this time. But
it's been readable for the past week, all alone and no co-channel QRM.
Will listen more on the weekend when I have more time and also confirm if
it's exactly on-freq. August 14, 15, 16, 17.

[later] 6115.000 Radio Congo at 1808 UT in French. Decided to get up for
work early and chase this a little closer. Really good today with news
magazine program, with stories occasionally alternated by male and female
announcers. ID by man as "Radio Congo" at 1811 UT, then into a story by a
woman. Several mentions of "Congolaise" but not just national news- also
heard mentions of "Niger" and "Mauritanie." Brief music bridges between
segments. Very familiar to how I remember the station in the early-to-mid
1970's (when they ID'ed as "La Voix de la Revolution"). 18 Aug.

Ecuadors Hauptstadt Quito liegt.
in Pifo getroffen. Andernfalls haette sich "HCJB global" bei einem
Ungluecksfall immensen Schadensersatzforderungen ausgesetzt gesehen.

Man steht
Arbeitsgemeinschaft Radio HCJB in Deutschland.

"Rufe mich an, so will

VoBME ... was on 7175 yesterday, absolutely clear, unlike other days when

R. Ethiopia External service, 7165 jammed from 1600 to 1730 yesterday as

GABON/ANTARCTICA/USA 15475 Africa No. 1 tonight, Fri 21st Aug, very
good signal at 1800-1900* UT, nothing on 9580 kHz. So still only one

Europe.
(Thorsten Hallmann-D, dxld Aug 21)

Yes, ANO 15475 must have just been reactivated, so with Greenville DRM
after 2000 UT, that leaves only 19-20 UT when LRA36 is possible in the
clear.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Aug 21)

Africa #1 has just been heard on 15475 kHz with news (in French of course)
until sudden off at 1908 UT. Positive ID heard, so is it a recent return
to air for this transmitter? The signal was very strong and well
modulated. Will need to try 17630 kHz tomorrow.

Interestingly, there was a het on the high side, and now I hear what must
be R. Nacional Arcangel San Gabriel on 15476.0 kHz. The signal is weak,
and with some splatter from a religious transmission in French on 15465
kHz. ATA is only occasionally moving the S meter, but I hear a lady in
Spanish and occasional music. A long time since I heard this one.

Considering that the maritime operations are no longer carried out from
the Gufunes facilities, the operating and maintenance costs at the Gufunes
telecommunication centre should be charged 100 per cent to the jointly
financed services under the Icelandic Agreement as of 1 June 2004

To this end, the following operational facilities were visited:
-- Reykjavik area control centre,
-- Gufunes communications centre,
-- high frequency (HF) transmitting station at Rjupnahaed,
-- and HF receiving station at Thverholt.

The variety of transmitters, receivers and antennas at Rjupnahead and
Thverholt, and the controlling equipment and workstations at Gufunes,
provide for good HF communications coverage in the entire Reykjavik
control area and beyond, even under difficult propagation conditions.

respectively (in additon to being a standby site for rx and antennae). But
it was actually Jari Savolainen-FIN and not me who asked if the location
of the RUV relay txs were at the same place as air traffic txs. The reply
was:

"That is affirmative! The HF transmitters are located at Rjupnahaed!"

"The HF/SSB receiving site at THVERHOLT, some 60 km NoNoWe of Gufunes (90
km by road), was completed in 1992.

This site, being unmanned, and remotely controlled from Gufunes, is now
the main HF receiving site, containing advanced remotely controlled HF
receivers, channelized and synthezised, five log-periodic antennae, and
three different types of omnidirectional antennae.

All the receivers can be connected to any combination of antennae through
an advanced computerized antenna-selector system.

The site is connected to Gufunes via two separate microwave / fibre-optic
cable routes for redundancy.

In addition, standby receivers and antennae are located at Gufunes.
Several 5 and 10 kW modern HF/SSB transmitters, channelized and
synthesized, as well as transmitting antennae of different types are
located at the Rjupnahaed transmitting station, some 10 km SoSoWe of
Gufunes, where from they are remotely controlled.

Rjupnahaed has been the location of HF transmitters and antennae for
Iceland Radio since 1946."

PAKISTAN 630 Radio Pakistan Lahore goes silent. Instead of upgrading
the equipment and replacing the old transmitter of Lahore Station, one of
the major medium wave (MW) stations of the Radio Pakistan, has been
shutdown completely on the directions of Director General Murtaza Solangi
on the other day.

This medium wave station had been working since 1937 and was widely
listened throughout the world, including the main cities of India on 630
kilo watts (KW)[sic]. It played a key role in the wars of 1965 and 1971 by
broadcasting patriotic national songs.

Interestingly, besides closing the chapter of Lahore Station, Solangi also
sealed another major news and current affairs channel of Lahore Station
that was being listened on 1332 kilo watts[sic] for the last 4 years. It
is pertinent to mention that 1332 KH[kHz] was established by investing
almost five hundred million rupees.

An official of Radio Pakistan disclosed that the Ministry of Information
and Broadcasting was keeping mum over the solo initiative, as the DG has
close relations with higher authorities. That is the reason why he is
making such decisions from the time he took the charge of this key post.

The source further says the federal ministry is authorised to establish or
close Radio Pakistan's any station but it has remained silent over this
solo step owing to various reasons.

The DG Radio Pakistan is of he view that the closed station was in loss
costing expenditure; moreover, old infrastructure was not fulfilling the
modern requirements of broadcasting. For meeting modern needs, on the
further directions of DG, a new short wave[sic] channel FM 93 has been
established by replacing Lahore Radio Station, which is listened on short
range covering the area of 30 or 40 km.

History of 2006:
Ref the report on new Pakistan 1332 kHz:
By coincidence, I arrived in Pakistan yesterday (23rd). I can confirm that
the new tx in Lahore on 1332 is indeed on the air. Also active are two
other new MW txs: 1134 Quetta and 1170 Peshawar, which are also not listed
in WRTH 2006. As part of my pre trip preparations, I had been briefed on
Pakistan by experts Mauno Ritola, Olle Alm and Noel Green, who gave me
details of these three new txs. They are said to be 100 kW each.

No doubt I will have more to report from Pakistan later. The bands
currently have a number of stations audible from both Pakistan and India
providing commentaries in various langs on the test between the two
countries in Faisalabad.

1332 - Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shaykh Rashid
Ahmed will formally inaugurate the country's first ever highest freq High
Power Transmission (HPT) here on Saturday, 21 Jan 2006, bringing radical
changes and development in nx and current affairs programmes of Pakistan
Broadcasting Corporation (PBC).

The new HPT, having freq level of 1332 kHz, has been installed by the
engineering team of the PBC while German engineers representing Telefunken
company helped in initial stage in the installation of solid state
(digital) technology, with an estimated amount of 30.5m rupees [500,000
dollars] approximately.

The landmark project, completed in a record period of six months, will
help the state controlled media in joining mainstream of advanced nx
network and current affairs to keep the listeners informed of global
development occurring round the clock.

Credit for embarking on induction of high level freq for various HPT is
yet another feather in the cap of the present govt that firmly believes in
the freedom of expression and access to information, the Information
Minister Shaykh Rashid said while talking to APP here Friday [20 Jan
2006]. He said freq of HPT Peshawar had already been improved while same
was in offing for Quetta centre.

The improved freq of HPT Lahore will benefit listeners within the radius
of 100 miles in day time while 280 miles at night, PBC engineers told APP
giving final touch to the inauguration ceremony scheduled for tomorrow
morning.

Nick says "I've been surprised at what my simple sets have been picking
up. It all started as a fixed tuned receiver for SAQ, but evolved into a
tuned receiver to see what else there was down there. The only problem
with having to tune the set is the rather large inductance values needed
for the RF amplifier around the 20 kHz region. Plus it needs a lot of wire
for the aerial coil. The oscillator is based on a 555 timer chip
oscillating in the kHz region, but it's easy to vary the tuning here with
a simple pot."

7140.000 Radio Rossii (Program 2), Russian. it's still here. Found it by
accident, after powerhouse (and co-channel) Voice of Korea signed off the
freq at 1250 UT. Fair at best with light instrumental music, brief
comments by M, time pips at 1300 and ID by M. Still here at 1400 recheck.
Presume this is 5 kW from Yakutsk? Signal strength would seem to reflect
low xmtr power. Seemed to be "right on" frequency but there was a slight
hum in the audio (which I first thought might have been a het).

webcast instead of SW 6055, 5965 or 9630 kHz. Entire program devoted to
interview with REE tech director Jose Antonio Garcia M. about DRM plans.
Yes, they will have one DRM transmitter going toward NAm by yearend at
Cariari, COSTA RICA, and plan to add another after that, which could cover
SAm or any other target.

Besides the one DRM at Noblejas, plans to add three or four more DRM-
capable in next few years as old transmitters are replaced, but also
continue analog. That was about the only significant 'news' but he and
Antonio Buitrago managed to converse for 25 minutes. Also mentioned relay
exchange with China. Show repeats at 0005 UT Sunday.

TAIWAN Taiwan station moved from the ham band. The RTI-CBS Chinese for
mainlands on 7185 moved to 7385 kHz from Aug. 15 at 1000-1700 UT.

And RTI-CBS 2nd confirmed that it moved in Aug. 16 at 1400 UT to 6075 kHz
from 7130 kHz. \\ 6145 kHz.

Clearing it can receive 6075 kHz non-jamming. 7130 kHz can receive only
CNR-1 of the jamming.

To be a plan is to Aug. 18, the RTI Japanese service on 7130 kHz returns
to the Tainan TX site from Aug. 19.

Interesting seeing the changes within only a couple of years too.

UNIDENTIFIED 11890, surprised to hear news in English at 1404 UT Aug 19,
and as soon as "BBC News" IDed, cut off the air at 1406* UT. Figured it
was a regular transmission prolonged another 6 minutes for a bit more news
as BBCWS has been caught doing elsewhen, but no BBC at all scheduled on
11890 in any of the current online references. There is, however, in once
source not including WRTH, SLBC supposedly in Sinhala or Hindi, so
possibly Ekala, but I think that is really on 11905 kHz.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Aug 19)

Probably via WOF-UK?
This is a common procedure at TX sites done by the engineers, to prepare
the TX and feeder path for the ne t transmission, which is due on
schedule, in this example for DWL via Woofferton UK, - I guess taking the
available BBC program on air.

Same behaviour noted also on IBB sites at Biblis and Lampertheim Germany.

In 1998 and 2002 ago we discovered the anti-Iran clandestine "VOSA - Voice
of South Azerbaijan Vienna" broadcast on 7095/9375 came really from Yavne
Tel Aviv, which did broadcast few minutes the real KOL program ...

USA The HCJB Global Technology Center, based in Elkhart, IN, USA in
cooperation with the International Broadcasting Bureau, will begin a
series of digital broadcast test transmissions on shortwave starting on
August 17. The demonstration broadcasts are using IBB transmission
facilities on the east coast of the USA and a DRM exciter and content
server developed by the HCJB Global Technology Center.

The broadcasts are operating at an average DRM power of approximately 8 kW
using a rhombic antenna aimed at 45 degrees on 15475 kHz from 2000-2200
UTC for reception in Europe and a log periodic antenna aimed at 306
degrees on 9405 kHz from 0000-0400 UTC for reception in North America. The
broadcasts are expected to continue for at least several weeks. Reception
reports can be emailed to
