Don't find this in all schedules; it's via Darwin during this hour only,
250 kW, 317 degr. The I=3 in SIO 433 must be WYFR, which is aiming due NW

well to AB, as it is also aimed NoWe, from Darwin (gh).

317 degr main lobe is rather aimed towards Bangkok, Myanmar, Nepal, Kabul,

CFRX Toronto, back on the 6070 air as of Sept 3 around 0550 UT, again with
full modulation and good strength for only 1 kW. Had been off a few weeks
for transmitter repairs, first reported by Steve Lare, MI, as reactivated
the previous afternoon. No longer Peter Anthony Holder hosting talkshow at
this hour, who in the meantime was fired by originating sibling station
CJAD, along with a dozen other hosts, but his website is still up:

CFRX, 6070, Sept 4 at 1229 with EDT TC, Bill Carroll show, het on hi side
and roar from defective Swiss transmitter so kindly sold to North Korea
(as discussed in DXLD 9-065); the usual case until its closedown around
1250, whose exact time today I missed, but CFRX in clear at 1257 UT
recheck.

Manchmal kommen beide Audios,
Mein noise
war also Dein Log.
Vancouver dabeigewesen?

CHILE HCJB tests via Christian Vision Santiago Chile site.
Just to let you know that, from our side, we are ready to carry out the
test transmissions for HCJB next week from September 7th to 11th. We will
use Antenna 6 and Transmitter 7 as follow:

2300-2400 UT 9865 kHz in German
0000-0100 UT 11755 kHz in Portuguese

In den kommenden Woche wird es einige Testsendungen fuer den
portugisischen und deutschen Dienst von Radio HCJB ueber die Sendeanlagen
von CVC in Chile geben. Das Zielgebiet ist Suedamerika bzw der Norden
Brasiliens. Wer es hier in Deutschland auch mal probieren moechte:

07. - 11. Sept. 2009:
2300-2400 UTC 9865 kHz; 0000-0100 UTC 11755 kHz

CHINA Radio China to vacate amateur-only section of 7 MHz band.
QSY. Nei Menggu PBS 7105 kHz moved to 7430 kHz from 0950 UT on Sept 1st.
Chinese stations disappeared from HAM band.
(Sei-ichi Hasegawa-JPN, NDXC HQ dxld Sept 1)

Your thinking the same thing I am. I do know that the Chinese Taipei
Amateur Radio League has been putting pressure on the Taiwan government to
do something about the interference from China on the ham bands. Maybe
this could be it, but because Taiwan is not allowed (or prevented by
China) to be part of any international organizations I don't see them
being able to do anything, unless Japan did it on behalf of Taiwan which
could be the case.
(Keith Perron-TWN, dxld Aug 31)

Radio China, what's that? Never heard of that station. Does this refer to
the PRC or the ROC? Aoki currently shows only one PRC transmitter still on
7100-7200, i.e. Nei Menggu on 7105. Until recently it was necessary to jam
Taiwan on 7130, 7185 but those have moved out, so who deserves credit for
that? What are or were all five frequencies? The story is in the future
tense, but appears already outdated.

I don't find any recent article to this effect on the IARU Region 1
website homepage nor where it would be more likely at IARU Monitoring

It is reported that two kinds of Firedrake is transmitted, actually to be
a monitored of NDXC is the same music.

The same music establishes an interval for about approx. 6 minutes.

Received on Aug 2, started of drums of "Harvest Gongs and Dramus-Feng Shou
Luo Gu" at 0711 UT on 14420 and 18320 kHz, and started at 0717 on 13970,
15150, 15200 and 17470 kHz.

I think that the time for start is different by a TX site.

Firedrake check Aug 31 at 1331: poor on 9000 kHz, and barely
audible/imagination level on 8400 kHz, nowhere else except in the 12040
mix.

Firedrake Sept 1: at 1320, good signals on both 8400 and 9000; at 1415
recheck, 8400 inaudible, and 9000 just barely. At 1407, 13970 was JBA,
better on 14420; none others heard up to 19 MHz.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Sept 1)

Considerable Firedrake activity during my early local evening:

0213-0230, Sept 1, solo Firedrake on 13970, 15200, 17470, 17540 (Off at
0215. A new SOH frequency?) and 18320 kHz. Scanned from 7200 thru 1900 UT.
Heard as the sun was about to set over the Pacific Ocean.

At 0321 heard FD on 13970, 15150, 17470 and 18320 kHz.

DENMARK Re: WMR Ilskov hardware location.
Google Earth imagery. Some high resolution place. VE Update - Google Earth
V.5 historical image.

Guys ... why don't you ask me? I have no problem giving any information as
to the operation of the WMR transmitter site near Karup. What exactly do
you want to know? Photos? Dates when on air?

The postal address of the transmitter site was Gedhusvej 24, Ilskov,
Karup, Denmark - and from the first period from here, we were on the air
from that very farm house. However the tx operator wanted the aerial to be
moved some metres away from the house, and so the aerial was moved I guess
close to 100 metres to the other side of the road.

There is absolutely nothing left now. The tx-operator died from cancer
almost one year ago, and everything was removed and is now in a warehouse.

Best 73s
Stig Hartvig Nielsen-DEN (SW TXsite Aug 31)

We have some further information about the now exinct Radio Station & TXer
site of World Music Radio.

WMR used two antenna sites over its lifetime, but just the one transmitter
location. Essentially I count this as one site as the antennas were moved
only a matter of meters from the house.

Interesting that Stig mentions he would love to return the station to air
if he had sufficient funds. I'd certainly love to hear Denmark back on the
shortwave bands again.

Stig notes follow & I have posted three images up on the Yahoo Group
website of the antenna/s. Check out the images in PHOTO ALBUM #10

Address of second site: N 56 degr 15.450' E 09 degr 04.211'

Both aerials are clearly visible on this (outdated) map:
<http://www.krak.dk/kort/>

Yes - first test broadcast on 15810 kHz was on May 9th 2004.
First test broadcast on 5815 was on May 18th 2004 at 1710 local time.

Test from first site ceased on July 5th 2004 at 0800 local time. Resumed
from second site mid-August 2004.

Silenced in a hurricane (39 m/sec in the area) on January 8th 2005. This
really was the end of WMR (once again)

Later used for rebroadcasting 'Free Radio Service Holland' and
'Spaceshuttle Radio'. Last time on the air: June 15, 2008.

I ran out of money (having spent [$$$$$$$ ... Ed] on the project) so had
to stop it. But I would love to bring WMR back on the air if I had
sufficient amount of money.

from ERI. A group of A-DX ng DXers checked the 7165 / 7175 kHz channels in
past week. Before 1600 UT Asmara suffers by ETH jammer for 2-3 minutes. At
varying time around 1600 UT Asmara hops from 7175 to 7165 kHz, the ETH
jammer follows, sometimes starts late at 1612 UT, - but both cover now R
Ethiopia's regular service on 7165 kHz.

6090 Amhara State Radio 0257, 2nd of September, with interval signal and
opening announcement at 0300. Until 0257 on this frequency only Anguilla
carrying the English programme from "University Network" was heard. Then
at 0258 the drums of the interval signal of Radio Nigeria, Kaduna were
starting. Ethiopia seems to be a country that rediscovered shortwave.
There was no DRM interference at this time. Btw. in the 70ies and 80ies

European stations, especially by Radio Luxemburg.

Actually only some old ones, as Wolfgang already posted. It is believed
that one of them is in use on 6070/6100, an outlet that appeared after
this deal had been made and had originally stable frequencies as well as
differing modulation characteristics. But judging from a recent
observation by Glenn this transmitter appears to be quite defective now.

Btw, the old Switzerland list raises another question: What became of the
transmitters bought by AWR? They were designated for a new transmitter
site in Italy (a much more powerful replacement for Forli) that has never
been built. Do these transmitters still exist or have they been sent to
some scrapyard?

It seems that there were in recent years hardly any disruptions of
shortwave transmissions. Not that it would help too much to shut them off,
it would save some megawatts which are really peanuts. But it shows that
foreign broadcasting must be a priority when they keep it up while cutting
power to private homes, industrial plants, railway power substations.

And do people in South Korea really want a reunification? Do they really,
seriously believe that their economy would survive this?

UNIDENTIFIED DW Rwanda 15410.0 often has a het on it one side or the
other, and Aug 25 at 1339 a carrier was measured on 15408.4 kHz while much
stronger DW was in Hausa this hour.

The only reasonable explanation is clandestine V. of Tibet, in Chinese via
Tajikistan, known to jump around, and/or ChiCom jamming, but per Aoki Aug
24, VOT is now scheduled only at 1315-1330 on 15415. HFCC has Dushanbe
available on 15410 between 1230 and 1400.

However, the VOT schedule in the WRTH A09 update of last May covers what
we heard, in Tibetan after 1330:

VOICE OF TIBET (Clan) kHz: 15412, 15422, 17550, 17557, 17560 kHz.
Summer Schedule 2009 Chinese Days Area kHz

1300-1330 daily CHN 15412dsb +/-

Tibetan Days Area kHz

Unid 14790 kHz. From around 1745 till 1757 UT on Aug 29, I heard a
broadcast signal on 14790 kHz. It was clearly from Washington (mentioned a
few times), but in an unknown to me language. I do not know if it was a
VOA, RL, RFE/RFA or other IBB program, nor do I know whether this was a
harmonic or a spur. If this is a regular, chances are it will be present
from 1700 through 1757 UT every day, giving people more of a chance to ID
this signal.

UAE 1539 With ERF Radio in Germany on 1539 kHz now signing off at 2100
UT, it leaves SER Spain as the dominant station that can be heard in the
UK on this frequency after that time. However, if you can null Spain then
you might be able to hear Radio Aap ki Dunyaa (VOA Urdu Service) relayed
from Dhabbaya (UAE). I heard them from 2200 UT on 29 Aug with VOA News in
English until 2205 UT and then back into Urdu with ID "Radio Aap ki
Dunyaa". Generally weak but some fair peaks on occasions.

Also check 1575 kHz for Radio Farda in Persian via Dhabbaya around the
same time.

USA NASWA column.
If you are reading this, chances are I have used your DX information for
this column at some point in time. Because this will be my final column
(my reasons are in a personal note at the end of this column), I would
like to thank you for your help. I couldn't have done this for 13 years
without you.

I'm not sure who will be assuming my duties, but rest assured I will
forward all my mailing list and contact to them; you should be hearing
from them in due time; please afford them the same generosity and courtesy
you've shown me. 73 & SK, Al Quaglieri [. . .]

With this, I come not just to the end of another month's items, but also
the end of my stewardship of this column. This was entirely my decision,
there is no personal drama or club intrigue behind it.

A lot has changed since I began DXing in 1962: equipment, locations, me,
the world, broadcasting itself. Some of these changes were for the better
(most change is, whether we like it or not); others, however, have worked
against me.

Noise, for instance. I've been battling local RFI for decades. Now, noise
is simply everywhere, all the time, and it has won; I can't very well go
to all my neighbors and ask them to unplug their plasma TV's, their home
security systems, their in-home powerline networking. Over time my RF
noise floor has gradually risen to a level that has made real DXing
impossible.

Without DX, and with additional gremlins (CODAR, or DRM, anyone?), I
haven't been listening much lately. Not much at all.

I believe that Listener's Notebook really needs an editor who still has a
hand in the game, and, regrettably, that is no longer me.

Before turning over the reins to my successor, I must acknowledge the
contributors who've helped make this column possible month after month,
the supportive and interesting radio friends I've made in the process. You
have all been wonderful, and I cannot thank you enough.

To the publishing and executive staff of NASWA, your patience with
thirteen years of my chronic tardiness certainly qualifies you for
sainthood. Thank you for entrusting me with the keys to what was a
distinguished DX institution long before I arrived. I hope I've left the
place in decent condition. Can I have my deposit back now, please?

And to everyone in the SWL community, I can only hope that in some small
way I've helped better your enjoyment of this amazing hobby. We share
something very special, you and I. As long as ghostly electronic whispers
from afar continue to bounce about us, we will continue to be thrilled by
the sheer joy of pulling them out of thin air.

VATICAN STATE After close down of Radio Voice for Democracy and Peace
(from Asmara Eritrea) at 0430 on 7165 kHz is almost regulary heard a spur
of Vatican Radio here from fundamental 7335 kHz in Romanian and Bulgarian
(from 0430) till 0500 UT. No signal on symetrical 7505 kHz. Trying to
check the bc 1800-1840 on 7365 in same languages. I wrote about it to
their Technical Dept. Noted for example on Aug 1st and 30th.

Yes, at same time VR is on 7250 kHz towards CeEUR in German, Polish,

VIETNAM Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) officially launched its East
Sea broadcasting project yesterday at the VN1 transmitter station in
Hanoi's Son Tay town. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung pressed the button to
start the transmitter.

Now that the project has been put into operation, fishermen and soldiers
operating offshore or living on islands will have a channel providing
accurate, timely, trustworthy and round-the-clock information on domestic
and foreign affairs, economics, cultural, and social events, and
especially forecasts about extreme weather, search and rescue work at sea
to minimise loss of life and property caused by natural disasters.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung praised
the VOV's effort in putting the first phase of the project into operation
while the country is celebrating the 64th anniversary of the August
Revolution and National Day and the 40th anniversary of implementing
President Ho Chi Minh's testament.

To better implement the project, PM Dung urged the VOV to make full use of
infrastructure, machinery and staff to improve the quality of broadcasts
on the East Sea. He emphasised the importance of the project to maritime
economic activities, natural disaster prevention and rescue efforts.

PM Dung asked the VOV to work closely with relevant ministries and
departments, such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and
the Ministry of National Defence to receive and transmit information about
fishing grounds, weather, and rescue work. He urged the VOV to make a
greater effort to become "a trusted and loyal friend" of fishermen and
soldiers operating offshore or living on islands to protect the country.

PM Dung agreed that the Government will continue to finance the second
phase of the project to provide high-quality news updates for Quang Ninh,
Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Kien Giang and central coastal provinces throughout the
day, especially at night. He authorised the VOV to research and implement
sub-projects to improve the quality of East Sea broadcasts.

On behalf of the VOV deputy general director Dao Duy Hua briefed attendees
on the project's implementation process. The first phase of the project
has been completed in 8 months with coverage reaching out 3,500km from the
coast, including all Vietnamese territorial waters and most offshore
fishing areas. (Source: Voice of Vietnam)

Andy Sennitt adds: No frequency information is given in the report, but
with coverage up to 3500 km from the coast this surely has to be a
shortwave service. Does anyone have the schedule?
(RNW MN by Andy Sennitt, Aug 30 via dxld) 60, 49 and 31 mb ? (wb)

I can receive VOV-1 on 7435 kHz of new frequency from 2300v to 2400v UT.
1st noted on Aug 29. I think that started new service. Opposed to Beibu
Bay Radio?
