Hi Barry and all,

I was in on the ground floor of digital control riding the video
(vertical blanking bar) in analog NTSC so here's a brief history of how
it works and what it does. I have mentioned several times how we overcame
the "never twice (the) same color" with digital sync so I'll skip it this
time.

That was the beginning of an idea, why use a separate control channel on
network switching when the VIR signal already rides the video? There were
plenty of unused lines so began the scheme of using them to carry
information off screen and unnoticed by the viewer. All switching comes
from Master Control and when the signals reach the local affiliate they
control local switching... commercials. (Light bulb in brain goes on.)
Don't ask why, I haven't a clue but the digital version of the age old
commercial killer never hit it's stride but it did get out of the
starting gate.

Now it's a safe assumption that other systems could and probably did use
digital conrtrol since they have two things in common, vertical and
horizontal blanking intervals. FYI "scrambled" analog (net links and sat)
removed the H sync and coded it in the audio and then that was dual
channel mono with the channels 180 degrees out of phase so nothing was
heard on a standard receiver. Then along came digital audio in the H
interval and stereo sound, time marches on and carries ideas with it.

Here we are today with digital TV so where did those control signals go?
Nowhere my friends, nowhere! They're right in there controlling away on
the networks and available to some Brainiac to come up with the world's
most advanced commercial killer. Instead of staring at a dead TV for the
duration the possibilities are endless, just have a cartoon DVD loaded
since they're just about as long as the commercial breaks.

Like they say in New York; "Hey buddy, ya want Mickey Mouse TV? I gotcha
mouse right heyah!"
