I'm in a serious mode at the moment.
I would think that if you're on packet then you are a dyed in the wool radio
type person (even if you access a BBS via a landline!).
I've been passionate about radio since about 1976, and I show no signs of
giving up.
We've all entered into the "VERY old chestnut" debates about the radio and
electronics hobby, and probably felt we entered into it just one more time
too much. However we keep going.
We all know that interest in "wireless" as a hobby is at an all time low,
and yet "wireless" is use more than ever !
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
WLAN's at 2.4Ghz,mobile phones (4 known bands), more satellites than ever,
wireless keyboards for PC, wireless home wx stations, cordless phones,
bluetooth, automotive keyfobs, wireless alarms.
But those experimeting and trying to undestand radio communications appears
to be at an all time low. THIS IS BONKERS!
As radio amateurs we all moan (me included) about lack of activity, lowering
of standards and all that, and yet rarely get together and pragmatically
discuss reversing the trend.
With so many administrations making changes to licencing structures, and
populations being brought up with "gadgets" and technology as standard,
we need to seriously think about why we need to make everyone realise why
*learning* radio is so important.
Naturally amateur radio is best placed to do it.
Both to ensure a natural interest and preserve the hobby, as well as
make sure a skill base is not lost.
We need hardcore suggestions.
Things to motivate people to do.
Everything from whipping the backsides of those who wont make or answer CQ
calls, to radio club talks, to NON radio club talks, to personally forcing
ourselves to adopt a homebrew project, or a personal experiment, or a personal
study of something radio or electronics based, to radio magazine letter
campaigns, to getting outsiders interested in US.
(Personally I find the latter works best when people see us using MORSE, or
parading about in public places with strange wire aerials and open air
radio equipment).
I'm thinking about putting together an article in the local press and/or
amateur radio press to encourage good old fashioned radio minded people.
(Go on - try it yourself, or are you another nobody ?)
But I'm finding it difficult to think of appropriate words and suggestions,
so I'm looking for suggestions and good wordmanship, for an honest and
pragmatic challenge, which I'm finding myself at a loss.
Hopefully us packeteers can provide ideas that turn well trodden road into
something positive, and that noone else managed to achieve. Lets show the
world !
