Hello , especially OM Andy

10 ways to boost hobby...Annother too little too late?

I agree, today radio is in one form or annother in more use
than ever.
But getting the youth interrested? You probably have heard
the stories of youth in many countries overweight and
underworked. They prefer the computer in a way of games,
entertainment and communication. E-Mail that is and web. No
licence needed. And no morse.( This question has been dealt
with now...)

Morse, I agree too that this mode is interresting to many a
bystander. And it is an international mode. Fisted in the
Q-Code and understood internationally.
That is one problem , packet faced from the beginning -just
one international language - english. Just english - no Q
code?
I once interrogated a way for a international way to get
some interrest in packet there. Little interrest as well ,
just one reply : How should that go?
Locally it is notorious that flea markets are held far away
from local shopping centers and such places. Sort of shying
away from possible newcomers?
And I must agree , I find it annoying when Hamming, talking
to someone far away in DX-land , to explain to a bystander
what it is , this black box, sound and wires and gemorse...
It is of great trouble to me listening on headphones for a
DX CW reply and at the same time verbally winning annother
bystander in for the hobby.
The are such operators - I knew one who could send at 25 wpm
away, having at the same time a sandwich and chatting with
me.

What WE must do om Andy is finding an answer to one of a
youth questions:
Ham-Radio ? What can you do with it?

Hams are great in contesting. Plastering the home walls with
Diplomas. They are great at new modes making enemies at
packet and inventing new contraptions. like antennas so that
they can find out how to pay or not to pay the inventor,
never to discuss the electrical properties therof.

WE must find ways , new ways to use Ham-Radio. Something
like learning a new languge, say Kisuaheli (or however it is
spelled or annother one) for packet - to use it worldwide.
Well that is probably something like telling a moonbouncer
to convert his/her transmitter into a microwave oven to
roast hamburgers at hamfests...

I had in mind - and here is a hardcore suggestion - a sort
of play , played internationally involving all countries.
Something much more sophisticated than that what the first
hams did - playing checkers by radio. Some sort of guessing
game, going from country to country, finding the right
frequency and or mode. Entertaining , interresting teaching
and informing at the same time.

Or a form if international fox-hunting. Involving many
countries, played from far away. Using all sorts of modes
and freqs.
Or find out the special code-word of many a different
transmitter/locations.
Or "sound - testing" Play to others your national
anthem/xchange thereof.
Have your national club send bumperstickers to all Hams : I
love Ham-Radio. ADVERTISE!
I once had the idea of a "Radio Play" , you know, the old
BBC ones like for Ham Radio to Hams made by Hams...I got one
response. From a youth. Was very keen...then.

So Andy , here are some ideas. I tried many here, but , as
you know , you cant do everything by yourself. And then "I"
like doing things by (via) Radio. I use it. Comes naturally.

New ways AND a bit more enthusiasm Folks...

If all else fails put Hamming on the "Verboten" list.
Remeber? In wartime, listening to the enemy, the inventive
form of trench radios?
Maybe it is the same as with books which are on the
black-list. Sold and read in greater numbers than ever.

Press on the following points :

Ham radio calls are free - unlike cellphone/SMSs.
Ham radio knows no borders.
Whats inside what makes it tick?
There are many simple radios using little parts.
Little power can go a long way.
What is is that YLs find attractive in this hobby? (Packet!)

Find new uses. What else can we do with these black boxes?

Hams are great at club meetings. They can chat away for
hours on the new budget, fiddle for endless with the
candidate list explain forever the new channell allocation
almost no one has a radio for.
The yes the seem to lack the knack of talking big companies
into give some parts and or subsidies, talking to school
officals , talking them into some extra time and room to
spur on some youth, talking to politicians - telling them
its for the future! Youth and teaching
And so on.

Other possibilities. Find a class, youth of , say 14-15.
Give them a video-camera and tools , and tell THEM to make a
movie about Hamming.
I got the argument that youth of today probably wrecks the
gear? Mjhh , maybe. Try the girls to do that, making a
movie. This video could then multiplicated and send to other
schools and places. Ahh Advertising again.
I came into the hobby by accident, many a year ago. I did
know about radio, shortwave and valves. Never heard about
Hams. Heard some on the radio. Then someone of our clique
stumbled over a Ham. Actually. And thats the start of a
wonderful lasting frienship...

ADVERTISE !
