I had several questions about the possibility of using one of the MFJ QRP

I have an (1997) Ensoniq AudioPCI model S5016 in my Pentium II machine
and it works FB for PSK31, Baudot RTTY, FeldHELL, MT63, and SSTV modes.
When I found a Creative Labs/Ensoniq card on store shelf, it says
PENTIUM required. So, I have not purchased for my 486dx2-66 machine. I
think Creative Labs and Ensoniq merged sometime after the S5016
production run.

Tnx for ur info.

Subject: [psk31] FD review MixW rocks!

Hi all, I'm just recovering from a interesting field day.

Tried to run PSK31 at club site and due to major problems with QRM that I
feel were not any fault of PSK31. I packed up my station and setup at home
running 1E.

Got a late start because of the QRM problems above but still managed 86
PSK31 and 21 RTTY.

I was running MixW 1.42 software and must say this software rocks! Don't
let the somewhat spartan GUI fool you.

MixW has lots of contesting futures, requires minimal disk space. It also
supports other modes like RTTY.

I found it very interesting switching between running PSK31 and RTTY - I
only had to make one small change to the audio output setting on my laptop
to work RTTY after PSK31 and found the operators running RTTY were going at
a amazing pace. It was fun trying to keep up and I think a lot of PSK31
operators could learn a trick or two watching some experienced RTTY
operators go at it.

I think PSK31 showed great potential, the fact that it can work with
minimal power and antennas makes it very well suited for portable use. I
used 100% emergency power for both radio and laptop (3 HD batteries no
charging during FD) and had hours left in each battery.

BTW I ran only 12 watts output on PSK31 and abt 25 on RTTY for all contacts
with a simple wire ant.

What's next? NTS???

I will have to try and write a proposal on NTS or NTS like messages using
PSK31.

That's all for now,

I think everyone using Windows programs for PSK31 should---right now---go
to Start, Control Panel, Sounds and select "No Sounds" under the Schemes
dropdown. And don't whine about not having the little chirps and bleeps for
your other programs. C'mon!

Have seen quite a lot of mail on soundcards on the reflector so I
thought that is might be useful to share this reminder.

I have just configured a new PC.

Just as a reminder.... Creative SB Live 1024 has two lines out plus a
(seemingly unused) digital line out.

OEM cards come without documentation so it is worth remembering that, in
order to activate both lines out, the 4 speaker Surround Sound option
needs to be enabled in the soundcard setup configuration. Levels are
then set up as normal.

I'm sure that this will have been mentioned already but I missed it.

I just installed DigiPan. I hooked up my cable from transceiver to the

I am not getting the full water fall as some call it.

I have tried the input and then tried the mic. My volumes are full bore,
and transceiver is full bore, but still I am not getting the full water fall
effect.

Is there something I am doing wrong? Or do I need to upgrade my sound card?
If I need to upgrade my sound card, what would you suggest?

I thought I would work out the kinks in the receive department before I went
to the transmit area. Rig I am using is an Icom 775. I am probably leaving
some question unanswered.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Phillip -

What do you mean by "full waterfall?" You won't see anything beyond the
bandwidth of your SSB filter. Usually, the right half of the waterfall
(screen) is black because it is out of the receiver passband. That's
normal.

No John, What folks actually need to do is minimize the number of
windows sounds, But more importantly GET AWAY FROM USiNG VOX. The
majority of windows sounds that get transmitted are because someone is
using VOX instead of a simple interface to a com port, or a RigBlaster.
I know that some folks don't have a free com port. But if they must use
VOX, you are right, they need to disable all sounds in windows.

HI Phillip
Please be more specific....."full waterfall" do you mean that your 3khz
screen is dark on the ends...or do you mean that the waterfall does not
fill up the screen..?????
The dark ends of the waterfall screen is normal...it is based on the
bandpass of your receiver...and is a normal diaplay...Most receivers fall
off starting around 300-400 hzs...
and will start falling off at around 2500hz on the top end....your
display taper off to black in areas beyound the bandpass of the receiver

If your talking about the size of the display..then you can adjust that
with the mouse on the upper and lower line of the waterfall display....

I am getting the signal traces, but where it says you should have a green
splash across the screen, mine is black all the way across. Plus I have to
turn the volume on the 775 full clockwise.

I am running an Icom 775 with the DSP on with the widest range of Digital
filters. This may be the problem?

I don't remember which sound card I have. Is there a preference to the type
of sound card that one should use in the computer?

I have tried swapping the input from the Line in to mic in.

Thanks again,

Hi Phillip. IF your problem is not enough drive out of your audio
output...... I have a TS-450. The External speaker outlet on the back
does not have enough drive for the sound card. There are several ways of
getting the drive. The way I do it is I go into a JPS NIR-12 DSP. It's
audio output does a fine job of driving the sound card. Another is to find
someone who is making an interface card that has an audio amp on it. If
that is the problem and you want more info, email me and I'll try to find
the manufacture of the PC card I have floating around in my junk box..

Dave and All,

It's not stable enough for PSK31. None of the little,
inexpensive QRP SSB rigs are. That's why Skip KH6TY and
Dave Benson NN1G of Small Wonder designed the PSK20. See p31
of June QST. The kit is $95 plus $30 for the case.
