Subject: [psk31] IF I SEE IT I HEAR IT

Articles in QST and CQ this month indicate that psk31 has the capability to
copy stations you can't hear. Is this because the speaker is unplugged or
physical disabilities? In my short experience on psk31, mostly on 2m and 6m,
I have found that if a signal is on the screen, I can hear it. Several times
on 6m I have heard a signal faintly, but nothing on the screen.

Does this indicate a problem with my equipment or is it normal?

Thanks for all your help.

As a newly licensed HF operator I would like to ask the group what is the
accepted class of emission that should be entered in the logbook when using
PSK31 mode? Would you believe, I phoned the RSGB and put this question to
them, only to be told "Phone the RA, they will tell you."
And on phoning the 'RA' they said "Just write DATA in that section."
I explained that 'DATA' is not a mode of emission and the reply was
"That doesn't matter, it's not mandatory."
I'll say no more...

The cure for windows sounds is to use TWO sound cards. Win 2000, Win NT
4.0 and Win 98 all work, but the software has to be able to address the
two cards. WinPSKse, DigiPan and others do so; some don't. The
"default" sound card is used for your windows sounds/music/web noise and
the 'other' is used for PSK / RTTY / SSTV (JVComm32 also is fine with 2
cards)

David,

On several occasions, HF bands, I have called CQ, stood by for an
answer, saw nothing but noise on the waterfall display, heard
nothing but noise and have been amazed to see a reply printing out
on the screen. Copy wasn't solid, but it was good enough to log a
contact. That's not the norm, but it happens.

Hello David:

The capability of copying PSK31 signals that cannot be heard by the radio
operator is NOT due to a speaker being unplugged, nor is it due to any radio
operator's physical disability.
A PSK31 signal that is not audible and/or not showing on the program's tuning
display screen CAN BE detected, decoded, and yield useable screen printout of
information when a modern radio receiver and appropriate DSP devices are used
properly.

I don't think what you have observed/experienced is an indication of a problem
with your radio and computer equipment.

I have not as yet visited my local library to read those magazine articles, so, I
don't know yet just how the information that prompted your questions was
presented. However, I offer the following:

The information presented within Peter Martinez's psk31sbw.exe Help File gives an
excellent explanation of decoding and modulation theory for PSK(31) signals.
Other Help Files from other PSK31 programs also present the technical information
that would allow an understanding of why it is "possible" to decode a PSK31
signal and obtain screen print without actually "hearing" the signal.

A short answer as to why decoding is possible is: due to the combination of
Digital Signal Processing (DSP), excellent software, and modern radio equipment.

I suggest that you read and study the information that is available, in those
Help Files and elsewhere via the Internet webpages for PSK31, in order to obtain
answers your questions. Some of the key points to think about, among others, are:

the signal intelligence is encoded within the Phase angle, rather than within
the amplitude variations, of the desired PSK31
signal (i.e., consider the theory of PhaseShiftKeyed signal demodulation),

and

there may be several decodeable PSK31 signals within the receiver's pass
band and what is audible may not actually be the
desired PSK signal (i.e., consider the bandwidth characteristics of a PSK31
signal and those of the receiver's I.F.
    pass band response).

Personally, I find that is one of the most intriguing facts about
PSK-31. There can be no signal "railroad track" visible, and nothing out
of my speaker/headphones, and yet I'm in a good QSO. It's happened to me
many times since June of last year, and it's especially nice when 10
meters seems "dead", devoid of voice or even CW signals.

Thanks, Peter and everyone else who has made this mode what it is!!

Hello All,
I have followed the discussion about "windows" noises with some
interest although I have never heard them.
When I put together my set-up I already had an interface box between my radios
and my sound card [ I also use the sound card for signal analysis ]. There is an
Op-amp with selectable gain settings plus a manual gain potentiometer to ensure
the sound card was not overloaded.
The transmitter addition was essentialy as was shown in the May 1999 QST
except I added a reed relay to actually operate on the transmitter PTT line. In
the box I also have a signal level set for the transmit 'audio',which allows me
a smoother control of signal amplitude, than the gain controls in the computer
The transmit signal goes into the microphone input on the transmitter and the
box has a selector switch for Mike/PSK31.
Since I use the same COM port for my PK232 and PSK31 I use a simple A/B box
to select the destination.
It transpires that with this set-up it is not possible transmit the "windows"
signals.
I added an extra audio output to the transmitter using a tap ahead of the
audio gain control, [ after a while the deadle gets to be tedious, so now I can
turn it down without affecting the PSK31 reception]
I hope that this might help someone.

Dear John Turgoose and Fellow Warblers,

Before anyone gets wildly excited about the prospect of using TWO sound
cards in your PC, consider the number of limited resources that a typical
sound card requires - an IRQ, and two DMA channels. That is usually enough
to give you all of the configuration heartburn that you will need the rest
of your life.

Dear Vince,

The model CT2940 does not ring a bell, but I would be surprised if Win 95
does not have a driver for that card. Have you installed it and told Win 95
to find a driver for it? If you haven't, then you should try that. The
Creative Labs driver situation is murky at best.

I use "Nocturnal" if the contact is after 8 PM. I know, enough is enough...

Subject: [psk31] Mode designation

From G3PLX

The ITU mode designation for PSK31 is G1B, the G standing for phase
modulation, the 1 standing for a single channel of digital
information, and the B standing for machine reception. Some people
say that all data modes are J2B, which means modulation with an audio
tone into an SSB transmitter, but that doesn't designate the mode
that is being transmitted by the tone. If you want to describe the
PSK31 signal that you are radiating rather than the way you are
radiating it then describe PSK31 as G1B.

From G3PLX

If you are listening on VHF with a speakerfull of white noise, and a
weak PSK31 signal appears, you will probably be able to hear it in
the noise as well as you can see it on the waterfall and copy it on
the screen.

However, if you are listening on HF to a 3 kHz wall of PSK31 signals,
CW signals, Pactor and the like, and a weak PSK31 signal comes back
to you on a quiet 50Hz-wide bit of band in the middle of all these
noises, then you will print it on the screen, see it on the
waterfall, but the human ear-brain doesn't stand a chance of picking
it out.

Many thanks to everyone who took time to reply to my question on PSK31 class
of emission. For the sake of clarification to all concerned,
the logbook should show the class of emission as 'G1B'.

That is 'G' for phase modulation. '1' for a single channel of digital
information and 'B' for machine reception.

I hope this helps.

Kindest regards,
John (mm1dsp/mm5jlt) Scotland.

Subject: [psk31] Two tone generator

For those who might have and interest in audio tone generation with
computer.
Some time ago I downloaded a tone generator from the net(freeware).
I wondered if it could be run twice simultaneously to generate two tones for
testing of xmtrs etc.
The answer--you bet!
This is a neat way to provide audio tones for various test needs. If
interested you can download the freeware for windows at
http://www.world-voices.com/software/nchtone.html

In addition to single sine wave the program will generate several other
types of output including white noise which can be used for filter testing
in conjunction with spectrogram also running simultaneously.
