Geez - did you think I meant "diodes". I meant Transistors. You have to guess
what I meant, not what I said.

Suggestion:

If only one of you operates with "net" checked, then you
will slide up/down the band with the drift of just
one station rather than both. If you notice the drift
and are reasonably sure it is not you, turn off your
net function. Then your transmitter will not follow his
signal up/down the band. After he completes transmitting, your
transmitter will be on the last freq you used, and
he will have to retune. If the drift is about 7 Hz or less
his AFC will pull his receiver back on. Even if he
has to retune with the click of a mouse, if he does it during
the preamble he will not lose any text. If it is
you who are drifting, ask him to turn off his net
so he will not follow your drifting signal up/down
the band. Someone said don't use two frequencies which
this basically does in a limited way; however, it's not
polite to drift into another QSO either, and this will
limit your drift to that of the less drifty station. If
its you who are drifting, try letting the rig warm up well
before operating and try to keep the temperature of your rig
constant while transmitting with good ventilation and/or a fan.
I hesitate to say for you to retune your transmitter because
those that drift are usually older ones which have 10 or 100
Hz tuning steps, and retuning will cause a jump that his
AFC can't handle.

Now if we can just get more people on 10 and 15 meters!

Tony,

Actually, when 10 and 15 meters are open, there is a lot of
activity there. 10 meters is terrific when it's open. Out of my
total 325 contacts on PSK, 133 of them are on 10 meters, 30 are on
15 meters and a handful on 40 and 30. However, in the past few
weeks with low solar flux and double digit A indexes, those two
bands have been dead except for some short lived half openings
late in the day. If you can tune the SSB portions of those bands
and hear nothing, forget it. But, when you start hearing signals,
the warblers will be there in droves and 20 meter activity drops!
I am with the group that wants to give 30 meters a boost. There is
plenty of room for warblers there, a 200 watt power limit, little
interference from Pactor stations, and the band is almost always
open to somewhere. Just stay away from the occasional commercial
RTTY and it's great. So, I feel that if we can drum up more
activity on 30, that's our best bet.

Hi Richard. I hardly see any activity on 30m, except for some cw at the
lower end of the band. I will have to put out an ocassional call on or
about 10.140. See you on the air?

There is a new version of WinPSK (2.0) by Moe AE4JY. It adds two
interesting things, the first is a new user interface that favours disabled
ham that cannot use mouse, through the use of Function keys and Macros. The
second one is that he has produced a PskCORE DLL that is available in
binary along with instructions to use it that let programmers develop PSK31
terminals without having to deal with DSP questions. I keep a local copy of
those files on both sites.

PD: I have also added information about new versions of G-psk31 and twpsk

Last night while I scanned around 14.070 doing my PSK31 think, I noticed one
of the most bizarre bits of interference I have ever heard on HF (36 years
experience). It sounds like a mix between a voice signal and an ARQ type
signal. There had elements of voice intel and digital. Now I know I haven't
gone totally nuts, but this appeared to be down freq from 14.070 and it was
playing heck with the folks also trying to work the PSK31 mode. In addition,
our nightly visitor on ARQ showed up to give us several segments of idling
around 14.071 kHz. If I had ARQ capability I would surely go up and let this
LID know he isn't suppose to be there. Anyway did anyone elese notice the
unusual signals at the edge of the PSK subband last night?

73 all and look forward to working you on the air soon,

Larry Van Horn

The problem here is, that what he is doing is issuing a series of
connect packets to a specific station and the only thing his
software will respond to is a connect acknowledgement from that
station. The only call letters you can see are those of the
station he is trying to connect to. There must be a way to extract
the sending stations call letters from the connect packet but I
don't know how. If anyone has any info on that I would appreciate
it.

I don't believe the Pactor connect packet contains the transmitting
station's call sign. I believe FCC regulations would require the
transmitting station to send some type of ID such as a CW ID if a connection
is not made. The latest version of PTC-II firmware allows for a CW ID in the
case where connect requests are not made.

There may be no Palm Pilot (or other handheld) software now. With the new
PSK QRP rigs, I would sure like to see some. Or at least some WindowsCE
versions of DigiPan, for example. I have a friend with a Casio WindowsCE
unit (Casiopeia). It comes with sound capability (headphone out and built
in microphone and speaker).

This computer guru said that with some minor retooling for the WindowsCE
toolkit, the programmers should be able to re-issue for the WindowsCE
environment. Admittedly, the handhelds with a keyboard would be better
suited, but wouldn't it be cool to run PSK using the little handheld and
the new PSK QRP rigs? :-)
