Possibly to "get in the ball park." You should have no ALC
action at all. If you do, you already are overdriving. Also
the RF amplifier runs at reduced efficiency amplifying a two
tone signal. PSK31 at idle is a perfect two tone signal. When
you send text, it deviates from a two tone signal to where
sending all !!!!, at which case the duty cycle is on the order
of 80% - I forget the exact number. Probably a good
way to set the xcvr is to set normal output using CW then
shift to SSB. Place the PSK31 program in tune and increase the
audio until you have 50% the CW output. That's on the safe side, and
you probably will not be overdriving. Get an on-the-air report
of what your IMD is. It should be 30 dB down. 27 dB is ok,
but you can do better. Less than 27 dB, I'd stay off the air ;-)

You can play around with the resistors until you get in range of the
mike gain control, then use that. I used a resistor substution box.
Better yet, use the circuit in May 99 QST. It uses a 50k pot. That's
what I use now, and it's better than the fixed resistor approach.

Hi Pete. Thanks for posting the web addresses. Though I had the info
available before, I decided to build the keying circuit to key my Icom
706MKII from the com port of my laptop. I was using a home built
switchbox before, because I didn't have a free com port on the desktop
computer I used for PSK before I got the laptop. The circuit I built
uses 1 resister, 1 NPN switching transister, and 2 diodes. I just wired
the parts together (I think they call it "dead bug style". The circuit
fits inside the DB9 femail connector. I use the RTS line to key the
rig, because Digipan will nor work with the DTR line. I mostly use
Logger for PSK, but I have Digipan, PSK31sbw, and Winpsk set up too. It
took about 35 minutes to wire everything up, and total cost was $5.00
(from Radio Shack)including the DB9 femail connector. I cut the RCA
plugs off an old stereo hookup cable and used that shielded wire to
connect the keying ckt to the accessory plug for the 706MKII. It works
really well, and it is neat not to have to use the switchbox. I do not
like the idea of using vox to key the rig, as I have heard Windows
sounds go out on the air several times. Thanks again!
