From Peter Martinez G3PLX

Personally I never give signal strength reports on PSK31. If I give
an "S" report it's based purely on a subjective impression, and I
don't really know what I use to base this impression on: it's
probably a combination of how well I can pick out the warble of the
station I am working in the speaker and the quality of the copy.

By far the best report to give is a percentage copy. Look at a
typical line of text and estimate what percentage of the characters
are corrupted and subtract from 100% and give the other station that
report. This is the most useful. If I get a 70% copy report from the
other station, it's not worth me trying to explain the complexities
of setting soundcard levels, for example, I just stay with a standard
rubber-stamp QSO.

Hi My name is glen english, VK2JPR. I am new to this forum.

I have been reading all the doco and it is very interesting. Good stuff
guys!

anyone tried using 4 or 8 carriers next to each other to improve data rate?
I am working on a (adaptable type 2 hybrid arq )multiple carrier system,
to try and get better data rates for data transfer. Trying to keep the
symbol rate less than the multipath, and above C/N threshold. The intermods
betweent he carriers are a problem, though!!!!

I will have my PSK31 station going maybe this week sometime, look forward
to hearing some of you guys there!

Subject: [psk31] Signals at Beginning of a Transmission.

Hello Peter and All,
For the past two or three weeks I have been monitoring
PSK31 signals on a spectrum analyser, and I have noticed a phenomena which is
relatively common:
At the start of a transmission a signal will exhibit the characteristics of
severe overload which fade down to near normal in about a second or so. I have
used manual gain on my comm. receiver to ensure that the phenomena is not in my
receiver. Some of these signals also tend to show extra sidebands when the
transmission is in an extended "space" mode.
Note: These observatios were made primarily on 28.120 +/-.
I have checked my own signal by transmitting into a dummy load and monitoring
on the comm receiver but I cannot duplicate the effect. I was not aware of the
effect until I began to use WinPSK [by Moe Wheatley] which has a spectrum
analyser display as an alternative to the waterfall. The separate spectrum
analyser confirmed that the effect is actually present and not a function of my
PSK setup.
Has anyone else noticed this effect ?
Foot Note.
My transceiver is a Kenwood TS830s [ tube finals] and my monitoring receiver
used for the observations is a Drake R8A

Ben,

Yes, I have noticed this also and in the same frequency range
28.120 +/-. It didn't take a spectrum analyzer, it is quite
evident on DigiPan's waterfall display and in the displayed IMD
value. Just as I am getting about ready to tell someone they are
over driving, their signal seems to settle down to a normal -25
to -30db IMD and also lose its side frequencies. I was beginning
to think that there were a lot of people adjusting their drive
level as they went along. So, anyone got a real explanation for
this? Bye the way, my equipment is a Ten-Tec Omni VI Plus.

In Peter's PSK31SBW help file it says ....

"When you have reached the correct setting, you will see that changing from
the tuning tone to typing text, will make the transmitter power swing from
50% (no typing) to 100% (typing or tuning-tone). This change in power is
correct."

Although I have had good IMD reports and no complaints about my signal in
the past few months, I have NEVER been able to achieve the above. Usually
The difference is about 20% drop, not 50%. Anyone have any tips on
achieving the desired change ?

Hello PSK'ers, I have 2 computers one 586 clone and a AMD 300K6-3.
I have no problem running PSK on the 586 but I can not get it to work on the
AMD it just looks like it does not see the sound card. both sound cards are
the same SoundBlaster's.
I also run RITTY by K6STI on both computer with out any problem.
I hope there is some help here.
Thanks 73 Will, K6NDV

You probably need to look at the transmitter output with a scope to
tell exactly what is going on. The 50% figure assumes you have a
wattmeter that is reading average power accurately. I usually see
somewhat more than a 50% drop, probably due to the wattmeter but it
looks very good on a scope.
