My PSK31SBW, and the later PSK31 programs by others, display a
phase-scope which can be interpreted in the same way as an eye
pattern. In BPSK mode, the amount of disturbance of the vertical line
towards the horizontal is equivalent to the reduction in eye-height.
So if the phase scope is spread +/- 45 degrees either side of the
vertical, that corresponds to 50% eye height, and if it gets to +/-
90 degrees, that corresponds to an eye height of zero, at which point
corruption occurs.
For QPSK you need to think of how far the cross spreads towards the
45 degree position rather than towards the horizontal, so a QPSK
signal that is spreading +/-45 degrees will have an eye height of
zero, but of course the error-correction will most likely prevent the
text from being corrupted.

RE : phase scope for PSK31
Good explaination.
Actually for the mode like PSK the phase scope is probably more useful and
easier to interpret than an 'eye' pattern.
