Aisea,

You could use a dual supply, but I don't think it's necessary. Although I
haven't done any tests, I guess that a single-supply op amp would do the
trick. The op amp would have to be configured for differential inputs, and
could be /capacitor/ coupled. Since the input impedance would be quite high,
it would not be difficult to get a long time constant and hence ensure good
low frequency performance.

Adrian and All,

Check out:

This is an interface kit for use between the computer
and transceiver for PSK31, RTTY, or what have you.
It uses a op amp instead of a transformer for isolation
purposes. I helped a friend connect it, but I don't
have the schematic, so I don't know the details of what
he is doing.

Subject: [psk31] Double Byte Characters

From Peter Martinez G3PLX.

I would like to answer to the comments by Atsushi Nishio 7M4KSC/AC5RX
about extending PSK31 to transmit more symbols by using double-byte
characters. I think he is suggesting that these could be transmitted
by sending two varicode symbols in sequence, each varicode mapping
(as at present) to an (ANSI) byte, then interpreting the decoded two
byte sequence inside the receiving computer so as to display the
extra symbol.

I would strongly suggest that this is NOT the best way to do it.
Rather than extend by transmitting two codes, we should stay with the
PSK31/varicode philosophy and transmit the extended symbols over
PSK31 by simply extending the varicode alphabet to include the
required extra symbols. The varicode alphabet consists of codes of
variable length, so there is no upper limit to the number of codes we
could add, so long as we don't mind them getting longer. We can add
extra varicode symbols without disturbing existing PSK31 users, who
will just ignore the new symbols completely as noise, but they would
be recognised as valid by the new PSK31 variants in the countries
where the extra symbols were needed and defined. This is how PSK31
was extended from 7-bit ASCII to 8-bit ANSI by adding an extra 128
varicodes. This first extension of the varicode alphabet took place
so smoothly that no-one noticed it.

We would probably need some consensus before adding extra symbols in
this way, to make sure all groups wishing to add symbols were in
agreement about which should be included and what varicodes were
used. Once the extended-varicode representation of these new symbols
had been agreed and publicly documented, the codes, whether
double-byte or something else, used to display them inside the new
PSK31 versions need not be of any concern to anyone except the
programmer, whether he/she is writing for WIndows, LINUX, Macintosh,
or for some other operating system which we don't know about because
it hasn't been invented yet. Windows implementations written today
could indeed use DBCS format internally if they so wished.

Subject: [psk31] New QSO reflector

A new reflector has been established for those that want to use the Internet
for the purpose of setting up scheduled QSO's. The reflector supports both
web based access and email distribution. To subscribe send mail to
 mailto:qso-subscribe@egroups.com

To send email send to qso@egroups.com

This reflector is for any ham that might wish to schedule a QSO in any mode
on any band. Since those that subscribe know that the primary purpose is
for setting up QSO's , announcing your listening frequency, etc , etc, we
will avoid use of reflectors and DX clusters that frown on such activity.

The TALK mode will allow you to use your computer's mic to aide in setting
up QSO's. A calendar function is also available that could be helpful for
sked setting.

Use as you wish

Andy KB2EOQ.
