Greetings,

I am almost ready to commence the wire up from an early FT-1000 for PSK 31 
using Peter Martinez's software.

Is there someone on the reflector using this combination who would be 
prepared to keep in contact with me directly while I set up so to avoid 
some of the many pitfalls I read about.

Dear Graham,

You are not going to hear about much other than pitfalls - it's human nature to
bitch. So, you won't see many posting about successes.

Don't expect any difficulties - common sense has been sufficient for most of us,
so get on with it and let us know how you are doing. Most people who do have
problems find that they really knew better and just had a momentary lapse of
common sense - especially in such areas as ground loops causing hum and not
paying attention to such things as level settings in the Windows Mixer applet.

Just post your situations on the list-server being as explicit as possible - the
more effort you put into describing your problems intelligently, comprehensably,
and accurately, the better chance that someone can diagnose and recommend a
solution.

My receommendation for the MOST FOOL PROOF method of hookup for a beginner is
via an acoustic coupling with simple microphone and speaker using a thin
sandwich of polyurethane foam just for cushioning and elimination of echoes.
Sandwich the rig speaker to a sound card microphone and sandwhich the sound card
speaker to the rig microphone and use your trusty finger to push the Xmit button
on your rig at the appropriate time. Use rubber bands (elastics for you english
speakers) to hold things together for a reliable and repeatable installation. If
it takes you longer than 30 minutes to assemble this and get on the air, then
you get the booby prize.

Once you have that going, you will at least know how things should look and
sound when you get on with direct connections.

BTW - this simple method totally eliminates all concerns about ground loops,
wrong pins on connectors, VOX settings, etc. It's FUN time!!!

Hummmmm, hokay, too little successes? How about runing PSK31
on a laptop on a desk across the room and trying to get the
regular ham station running, and looking over at the laptop
just printing perfect copy on a qso?

I later demo'd same with a tape record at out regular
Saturday morning breakfast.... :-)

I'm using one of the Lectrokit interfaces and it works just fine. It's
pretty simple; the op amp is just a gain of 10 inverting amp preceded by a
level control. It runs off most any single power supply (I use 12.6V
because that's what everything else in the station control circuitry uses).
The TX audio line to the radio Mic input has a 100:1 (-40 dB) attenuator to
pad down the sound card output to a reasonable level. There are also a
couple of transistor switches to control a PTT line from the COM port
interface and light a red LED when in transmit. There's even a DPDT switch
on the board to disconnect the PTT and Mic lines from the radio when you
don't want to use the interface.

There's no need to use a dual supply for an op amp circuit like this. You
just need a half-supply reference that can be made easily by wiring a
voltage divider with two equal value resistors (values from 10K to 47K work
fine) across the supply and feeding the resulting half supply reference to
the op amp noninverting (+) input through a resistor (try about 1K to
4.7K). Its a good idea to bypass this line for audio with a small
electrolytic cap. This will cause the op amp output to float at half supply
voltage, so it's necessary to AC couple the input and output circuits. A
small electrolytic or tantalum (1uF to 4.7 uF) in the output works well,
while the input circuit requires only a small cap (say .01uF). If you use
an input pot, put it on the input side of the coupling cap to keep DC off
the pot.

Many years ago I needed to extract line-level audio from my hot chassis TV
set and found a Motorola **linear** optocoupler that worked well for the
purpose. As I recall, it was a MOC5010. I have no idea if they still make
these or not. To get enough current to drive the input diode I used a JFET
source follower, but don't recall exactly how I biased it up. It's still
working, though.
