Subject: [psk31] Pictures by PSK31!
Have you ever wished you could see what the person on the other end of a
QSO looked like?
I have put together a web page at
http://members.home.com/hteller/psk31pictures/, showing how this can be
done, as part of a PSK31 QSO, if print is 100% for at least 8 minutes.
Thanks to all the clever work by Peter Martinez, G3PLX, PSK31 often DOES
produce perfect print for long periods of time! Although PSK31 is a very
narrow-band mode, it is still possible to send a postage-stamp sized
color picture of yourself in about 8 minutes, if conditions are good.
The technique is simply to convert a small color picture to text and
send the text to the other operator, who then converts the text back
into a picture and can see what you look like! Postage-stamp sized color
pictures take about 8 minutes to send, and smaller, or black and white
pictures, currently take about 4 to 6 minutes.
Of course, there are many faster and more error-free ways to transmit
images, and using Internet E-mail is probably the most widely used, but
not everybody has Internet capability or E-mail access during a PSK31
QSO.
I would appreciate any comments on this process, or about the legality
of doing it. I hope, since only text is being transmitted, and decoding
is universally available, that there is nothing illegal in sending
pictures this way.
Have fun!

Speaking for myself I couldn't care less what the person I am talking to
looks like. If we are having a nice rag chew, I am more interested in
learning the personality of the person as we discuss things. I would
rather spend the 8 minutes that way. Of course I am from a generation
that has not always had TV.

It seems that it should be possible to have it generate a file with our own
call
and the .HQX suffix rather than KH6TY.HQX. I read the procedure rather
quickly, so I might have missed the description of how or when KH6TY
is replaced with our own call.
I'm impressed by the photographs. More detail is visible than what I
anticipated.

Hi Skip,
Sounds like fun to me. How do I get the software. I would like to try it.

Many thanks to all those who answered my request for help with a Yaesu
FT-1000 and PSK setup, the consensus of opinion was to purchase
a "Lectrokit PSK Interface" kit from Lectrokit in Sandusky Ohio, I have
E-mailed them without success, is there by any chance an Amateur reading
this living in close proximity to Lectrokit in Sandusky?

Graham,
Log into their web site: http://www.sanduskyohio.com/LECTROKIT Click on PSK
to see a picture of it. Click on "order" to order it. It costs $15.95
with $5 S&H, US and Canada.
Wave a credit card at them to get their attention.

Since everyone using psk31 has a sound card why not use it for sstv also
instead of postage size pictures. Full screen in a minute. Hate to waste 8
minutes just waiting for a picture to be sent/received. You can chat in psk
and move to the sstv frequencies, send your pictures back and forth then qsy
back to psk.
That is my opinion.
