Hello All,

There was such a great response to my request, I thought I should share a
brief summary with the list. Thanks to all who responded, and there were
many. Several had the idea of using a scanner to scan a pre-printed QSL
card, saving the image, then inserting the QSO info each time into the saved
image. That's a good idea, and I have a flatbed scanner. However, I wanted
something a little more "automated" ( I guess I'm a Windows kind-a-guy).
Someone suggested "On-line QSLing" at www.qslcard.com. I have not tried this
service myself. It sounds like a good idea, but not what I had in mind.
I was thinking of a software program that you could create a QSL card, and
either print it on your printer, or e-mail directly to the other station.
Several of you (Dave, Bill, and Graham) sent me THE program - QSLmaker, by
WB8RCR. You can find this program at - users.tm.net/jjmcd/qslmake.htm.
I have just started to work with this program, but it appears to be very
easy to use, and almost exactly what I was looking for - Hi hi. With
QSLmaker, once you have created YOUR QSL card, you just click on the QSO
button. Then you are prompted to fill in the QSO info (i.e. station call,
date, time, freq, mode, report). Then you can save as a file to e-mail, or
print. Within 5 minutes of loading the program, I had created my QSL card,
filled in the QSO info, and printed it - easy! You could even save different
"cards" for various needs, like UHF/VHF, HF, Satellite, or other. Then just
bring up whichever card you desire, fill in the QSO info, and off you go!
So many of you seemed interested about this - I hope one of these ideas will
help you. Thanks again to all who responded.

Hi David.  Last time I looked, Wal-mart was still selling a Sound
Blaster 16 Value.  The other Sound Blaster variants should work as long
as they have a 16 bit (or better) DA/AD (Digital to Analog/Analog to
Digital) converter.  I have also found that an ESS 1869 Audiodrive card
will work, as well as the ESS audio chip used in many laptop computers.

Some more info about the computer transceiver interfacing :

Besides the use of a transformer to isolate the RX/TX from the computer
audio output there is also the possibility to isolate the PTT switch
connection if you decide not to use the VOX circuit.
This is done with the help of an optoisolator connected to the serial port
you are using.

I'm using a 4N29 (you may use any similar type such as TIL111, etc.)
The connections for a 9 pin D Sub connected to the serial port are as
follows :

RST (pin 7) is connected to pin 1 of the optoisolator via a 1K Ohm resistor
(this value is not critical but should not be lower than 50 Ohm). Pin 2 of
the optoisolator is connected to pin 5 on the D Sub (computer ground). A
1N4148 is then connected between those two pins (1 and two of the
optoisolator). The cathode connected to pin 1, the anode to pin 2.
Connect then pin 5 of the optoisolator to the PTT input of your transceiver
and pin 4 to the RX/TX ground. A diode 1N4001 to avoid damage from spikes is
recommended. Cathode to pin 5 and anode to pin 5 of the optoisolator.
That's it, your RX/TX is now perfectly isolated from the computer.
You can easily fit all the components inside the DSub 9 case provided you
work under a magnifying glass !!!!
