Subject: [psk31] IC 706 Power at lowest setting
Just finished making some power level checks of the 706 at its lowest power
setting. This was prompted by a comment recently to me differing with my
earlier stated power readings ("L"). I had been on PSK31 and read about 3/4
watt in the idle mode. I jumped to the conclusion (prematurely as usual)
that the expected typical power out of the radio at this setting would be
about 1 watt.
In the CW mode, (and getting the same thing in the FM mode), key down from
160 to 10 meters, power ranges from 3.5 watts to 3 watts respectively.
What I had failed to take into account, duhhh, is that PSK31 or any mode
where the carrier is controlled by the amount of audio in, power is going to
be determined by where I set the sound card level. I was setting it just
prior to or at the point of ALC displaying on the meter.
So, in that mode, and at that audio input setting, I see about (and this is
a real rough reading) 3/4 watt in idle and somewhat over 1 watt with keying
the board. Tune mode shows about 1.5 - 1.7 watts.
Oh yea, and for what it's worth, while still on the dummy load and around
28.425 (or thereabouts), heard a SSB station signing over to another one.
The "calls" had a lot more NUMBERS in them than I think there outta be. Yep
North American "accent" too. Somebody get the shotgun!

No Gordon, this was not 1010 activity. They were signing some sort of
"Calls" These are of course made up, illegal and contain possibly combos.
of numbers and letters. There has been a lot of bootlegger activity
creeping into the 10 meter band. I hate to even give them the credit by
acknowledging that they are there.
