I'm sorry, gentlemen, but the dreaded repeat bug is not responsible. I did it
all by myself through a simple misadventure, which, thank goodness only had one
bullet in the chamber.
When I fired up another computer that never is used on the internet, it had a
piece of mail in the outbasket that had already been sent some time ago on a
different computer. There is such a thing as trying too hard to keep two
computers in synch with one another.
I don't think it will happen again - now that I'm aware of how easily it can
happen.
Some day I should tell you the story of the e-mail that went to the WRONG
person!
I will never live that one down!

Hello all,
I struggled for quite a while with an "overdrive" problem on my 570D, and it
wasn't for lack of trying. Many of you gave suggestions - Thank you. Using
the rear acc. jack, I tried every attenuator, divider, resister, isolation
transformer, RF choke, grounding, no grounding, audio level adjustment, menu
33 adjustment, mic gain adjustment, power level adjustment, and other ideas!
Nothing helped. Even running the mic gain back to produce about 20 watts
output still resulted in "overdriven" reports.
I am currently feeding the soundcard audio into the front mic jack using
VOX, and I am getting excellent reports. I use a Heil mic for SSB, and the
Heil adapter has a simple 1/8" mono jack for the mic. So, I swap my mic or
PSK feed there. I still use the rear audio out from the 570D to the
computer. This gives a level not effected by the volume control.
When using a TNC for digital modes through the rear acc jack, I have been
concerned that "all was not well" with my 570D, but it has done the job. I
sent a couple of e-mails to Kenwood Service without response. Anyway, I hope
this helps someone. I know I was pulling my hair out for a while.

Pete, I have posted this before, but you really should look at the output
of your soundcard with a scope and make sure that the signal is not
distorted at that point. Many soundcards will clip or flattop the output
signal if the mixer controls are set much above 1/3. Any distortion at
that point will prevail regardless of what you do between there and the
radio and with the radio controls themselves. You should try to operate
with the lowest possible settings of the mixer controls to reduce the
chance for distortion.
The best test you can make, short of having another PSK31 station in your
shack, is to operate in IDLE to produce a two-tone output from the
transmitter and look at the envelope pattern of your transmitter output.
You should see a good two-tone signal with NO clipping.
If you can arrange to set up another computer and receiver in the shack,
tune in your signal and look at its spectrum with the Spectrogram
program. This will give you a calibrated look at your sidebands and
distortion products. Or, just run PSK31 and look at the waterfall
display; not calibrated but diagnostic. This is possibly the most
reliable test of what you are transmitting. Be careful that you do not
overload the receiver, however, or it will generate distortion products
that confuse the results.

Thank you for your thoughts George. However, I don't understand the idea
that if my soundcard was distorting, I would have clean audio through the
mic jack but not the rear acc. jack? How is that possible?
Also, One of the many adjustments I made was to run the mixer levels down,
and come up on the xmtr levels. I was running the mixer levels as low as
possible and get any output at all. I even wired headphones inline with the
audio going to the xmtr to see if there was distortion during xmit - sounded
good, no difference.
With my current setup (through the mic jack), I am able to run 70-80 watts
output (the mic gain at about 8 or 9)with no apparent distortion. I would
like to have both connections made at the rear of the rig, but until I see
something I haven't tried, this is working well for me. Thanks again.

Final got the sound blaster board running. I had never used it and never
loaded the software for it. Also had to turn the speaker on. Now I can
see things happening, but no copy yet. Also had to turn my playboy bunny
of the month screen saver off.
First question: I am running Windows 95. PSK31BSW version 1.07
The waterfall seems quite small to be used as a tuner ? I have backed off
the input so it is no longer RED. Assume this is correct. Not sure what
I should expect to see in the waterfall. Will need better glasses I
think to be able to use it.
Second question: I seem to find two different sets of calling
frequencies. ie 14070 and 14070.150 ? What is the standard calling
frequencies?

It is shameful to turn off that screen saver; me thinks it is saving more than
the screen....
Peter has written a complete and comprehensive HELP file; It includes much
info, including how to set up the soundcard for a non-RED display and some
pixes of what is acceptable and non-acceptable waterfall display patterns.
Wipe clean your eyeglasses and read the HELP file; try it - you will like it !

By golly it works. Copied w4eeu and a df2ek in qso. Not sure how one
explains a waterfall but once you see it tuned in you know you will be
able to do it again. hi
Considering I am using a old Drake 2B to play with the program might be
lucky anything works. hi
Now will get in the work shop and build up the proper interface so I can
transmit. I put up a 20 meter double extended zepp yesterday so almost
there.
