Dear Stan,
Yes, start working towards that tidy, permanent configuration for the complete
PSK31 station with isolation transformers, etc. But before you get too deep in
all that, take half an hour to put together a simple acoustically coupled system
( just a rig microphone taped up to the soundcard speaker with some polyurethane
foam as a sandwich filler and also some more as a wrap-around blanket. You will
be "on-the-air" in no time - even if you do have to work the transmit-receive
switch on the rig by hand, you will get "into the game".

Out of determination to get up on psk31,
I have aquired a newer computer (P-133).
The package came with a 32 bit PCI sound card.
My question is ..... will that sound card be a problem...
do I need a 16 bit card instead and if so...what is a good

Hi, I am currently trying to set up my station to go PSK31, but am a bit
confused on how to correctly set up the right LINE-OUT level. I know this
has been discussed in the reflector before, but I still feel unsure.
My system is Windows 95, the soundcard is Soundblaster (older one, don't
know exactly the type) and I downloaded and tested different softwares like
PSK31SBW (1.07), Logger (6.7b and 6.08) and Mix32WDemo (v ?.??). Radio is an
IC-737A, and it is connected to the Soundcard via a simple cable without
dividers or transformers, but on the ACC-connector (not the MIC-connector).
This setup works fine for RX, but before passing to TX I want to be sure
that my signals are not distorted.
In RX I control the level with the PLAYBACK-Volume Control (Line-In
Balance), but when I hit the TUNE-button in PSK31SBW I can only control my
Soundblaster-output with the WAVE-slider! Is this normal? I thought the
Line-In slider in the RECORDING-Volume Control should do the job, or that
there should be a Line-OUT slider.
So: where should I do the necessary settings for RX? Is it in PLAYBACK or
RECORDING Volume Control and which slider(s)?
Maybe I need a different/newer Volume Control Software, mine is
DOS/Win3.11-era.
I must admit that I have never activly used the Soundcard before (just
"enjoyed" the standard Windows sound schemes), I really have no feeling
using it.
Another problem is a message "MsgSrv32 error in module GDI.EXE, general
protection fault....." when shutting down Windows 95, only if I was using
Logger (both versions) before. The next startup of Windows 95 welcomes me
with a "Windows was not properly shutdown....) and I have to check the drive
with Scandisk. This problem only occurs with Logger! Should I load an
updated devicedriver, and if so, where can I obtain it?

Hello OM Etienne:
Think of it this way:
The Record is a (microphone) input on the soundcard-- thus, this is where your
radio Rx audio is applied.
The Playback on the soundcard is normally an output that is applied to the
speakers-- thus, this is where BPSK/QPSK modulation Tx audio is applied TO your
radio.
The soundcard requirements are for A-to-D and D-to-A conversion of 16-bit data.
I suppose ? that your soundcard will be okay.

That sound card should work fine if it is mostly SoundBlaster compatible.
I'm using a Creative Ensoniq PCI 32 bit and it works very well.

You surely have a 16-bit (from a data standpoint) soundcard with 32
(separate) voices. Misleading when they started using 8, 16, and 32 in the
names.

Not really - most soundcards today afford at least 64 MIDI "voices."
Some, such as the SoundBlaster Live! offer 512 voices.
The 32 bits refers to the fact that most today are PCI cards that work
from a 32-bit PCI slot. They can process 16-bit data, of course.

Want to use 50 Hz DSP filter for PSK31 on your TS570D?
(should work on other rigs, too, by transposing these directions to your rig!)
Setup:
Set the step size for the MULTI/CH control to 1 kHz with menu #3.
Turn the MULTI/CH rounding OFF with menu #5.
Set your CW RX Pitch to 1000 Hz with Menu#20.
Operation:
Using VFO A, set mode to CW and the DSP filter to about 500 Hz.
Tune around and find someone to call. Tune them in.
Press A=B.
Press A/B.
Now on VFO B change the mode to USB.
On VFO B change the frequency with the MULTI/CH to exactly 1 kHz. lower -
just one click!
Press A/B.
Press SPLIT.
Narrow up the filter as far as you want - even to 50 Hz.
You are now receiving using CW with the narrow DSP filters and transmitting
on the same frequency using USB.
Of course this only works if you are using PSK31 with 1000HZ tone - which I
assume most of us are!
At 50 Hz you can't even see those 'ugly' sidebands some stations are putting
out! I usually use 150 or 200 Hz DSP selectivity just so I can see what's
going on.
Try it and let me know what you think. It's amazing what the DSP can do!
