Hi ..
Well, on a 14 inches 800/600 it's not so bad ... but I'm suspect to tell
since I got used to it. I've tried under 2 monitor/ WIN 98 too (Kachina on
12" display).
And from time to time I run Kachina/Log Software/PSK31 or FeldHell on a
133MHz Laptop (9" display) running 640/480. As I said, I got used ...
Will be great if Logger can drive Kachina :o) and if my Pentium stop
reporting "Linking Error" on Logger 6.07 :o) ...
BTW, the serial port commands are avialable on www.kachina-az.com

Cal:
Don't you have a TS570D?
If so, is your menu # 33 (AF input level) all the way down ('0')?
#33 allows three different input levels. At '0' it's all the way down. If
that's not low enough use a resistive divider of maybe 47K and 1K to drive
the rig. Then try the three input levels on #33.
One way to set the level is to reduce the input level (with #33 on the 570
and with divider) until the output level begins to drop from the 570's 'PWR'
setting. In other words, if you've got the 570 set for '50' watts, reduce
the audio input level until the output drops to about 40 watts. This way you
should be well down in to the 'linear' area of the rig, and still have plenty
of power for PSK.

The best solution is to use an attenuator. Check May 99 QST for a
circuit. If you don't have access to May QST, let me know, and I'll describe
it for you.

Dear Cal,
Your level adjustments are best done at idle. I.e., with a character followed by
nothing.
The Tune button is going to be double the average RF output as compared to
"idling", so it's not necessarily the best way to set levels for actual
operating - it's for tuning your rig.
On most rigs ANY ALC at all is too much. That might be considered too
conservative, but I know that my two rigs are good for about 35 and 55 watts
respectively on idle, and neither one of them shows any ALC at those power
levels. Any rig that can be operated at higher than about 55 watts and still
produce a clean PSK31 signal is unusual.
As someone else already pointed out, the signal from the soundcard can be
attenuated with a potentiometer, or divider circuit - just adding a resistor in
series with the line may not be effective, because you don't know the input
impedance of the audio channel into the rig. The higher that input impedance is,
the less effect that a given resistor added in series would have.
A confusion factor is wattmeters. I have tried several wattmeters here and none
of them are as good as a well calibrated scope. Several wattmeters that I have
tried read much higher values on a PSK31 signal that a true average meter should
read. I suppose it all has to do with the particular circuitry used, etc.
However, the DAIWA SWR & Power Meter, Model CN-101L seems to be a true averaging
meter and can be trusted at my shack for adjusting my levels on PSK31. I won't
list the meters that do NOT give good readings, because there are too many of
them. They all seem to be designed to read peak power or close to it - even
though that may have a "peak- avg" switch..

by Eduardo Alcolado I5PAC, and assembled in .HLP format by Pauli EA3BLQ. The

Good point, Dan - all programs written for Windows would do well to emulate the
Microsoft paradigm. It does put you further up on the learning curve when things
are the way you expect them to be. For example, I did not believe that the
windows in Logger could be re-sized, because I did not see the hallmarks that
normally indicate that capability. Was I ever embarassed to find that all you
have to do is grab the side of a window to re-size it.

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, Dan, but you threw the Baby out with the
wash water.
In spite of a few warts, more and more people are using Logger because it
combines Peter's superior PSK31 algorithms with the most valued add-on - the
type ahead buffer. I can refer you to some people who had your opinion to a "T",
but who did a complete 180 within a week.
